    Alternative not alternate. ;-)

Hardly surprising the English language is a little... interesting... influences from Latin, Saxon, Norman, French, Roman, Celtic, Viking and who knows what else. Makes writing songs or poetry easier as you have so many words to choose from that mean similar things.

Are not = aren't, which makes some sense as to contractions, but basically the rules are ridiculous.

Someone I know used to work for an Indian-American doctor. He was far worse than Brook!, and could never get a remote handle on American idioms (I would die in a completely foreign country, so credit where credit is due). "Rosemary, what means this putting my foot down?" "It means taking a stand, being forceful, being steadfast." Medical supply company calls and he says, "You listen now, I'm sticking my leg straight out!" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, I laughed so hard I almost had a stroke.

Celts and Picts, both were originally from mainland Europe.

As is everyone who inhabits the islands. No Neolithic Brits left. Celts were from modern day Netherlands and Germany I believe.

I "seen it" all before and believe that some guys actually feel it makes them somehow unmanly if they use proper English.

Lol. I wish I didn’t fix the thread title. Since nobody corrected it in the thread I thought it went unnoticed and fixed the title silently
