For sure, the most recent time we had a QB that potential hires would see as a reason for taking the job, they hired Gase..
What if we had taken Ja'mar Chase at #2 ? How good would Sam have looked THEN ? And if he still was horrible...we'd KNOW it was the QB and have to move on.
But I don't think Douglas was in love with Zach. If you listened to him up to the draft, he was not that effusive when discussing Wilson. The biggest reason I inferred from them taking Zach -- and I thought BOTH Saleh and Douglas were on the fence -- was that he would reset the salary cap and give them 3 do-over years on a rookie deal with Wilson.
Here's the OP from a thread from 2021 for anyone interested in the conversation right after the Jets let Darnold get away. Here's another that included a poll (Wilson was NOT the favorite) which filled up in just over two months beginning the very end of 2020: Darnold, Fields, Wilson, Jones, Trask, Lance | TheGangGreen.com - New York Jets Message Board Part 2: https://forums.theganggreen.com/threads/fields-wilson-jones-trask-lance-volume-2.95329/ Part 3: Fields, Wilson, Jones, Trask, Lance (Volume 3) | TheGangGreen.com - New York Jets Message Board
If Sam makes the Super Bowl he will make history. There has never been a USC QB that has started the Super Bowl on either the winning or losing team. Carson Palmer came the closest. Making it to the NFL final losing to Cam Newton and Carolina.
I feel the whole Darnold/Wilson episode points out that the guys in charge of these decisions, the so called experts, the people who supposedly know more than we do, don’t know more than us. Therefore, our opinions on the media such as TGG are just as valid as theirs are. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Who'd have thought when we traded Sam that he could be the first QB from his draft class to win a SB? Not Allen, Lamar, or Baker...Sam. He's 28-6 over the last two years, with two teams, and a rating of 100.9. He's won more games each of the last two seasons than he did in 3 seasons with us (13-25).
That ship sailed by a few miles by now. Wilson had every gift except what matters the most (the one between his ears). Let it rest, dude.
I hated that we were moving on from, Darnold. It happened though. Oh, well. On to the next disappointment.
I took so much crap from JD apologists over a few year. I don't think I can move on until this team wins eight games in a single season. This benchmark used to represent a break even 0.500 win percentage. It is an even lower bar now yet I need this team to clear it. Until then my blood will continue to boil on this one. Is that too much to ask?
So I was thinking....Sam stunk it up here for 3 seasons, then goes on to TWO 14 win seasons, and is now in the NFCCG. So can we duplicate this? Can we find a young QB who stunk it up for 3 seasons on another team, then bring him here? Ah, NM. We just tried this with Justin Fields!
The trick is to find a great QB guru like Shannahan. Another trick would be to bring in an old timer like Flacco as a starter to mentor a young guy for a year or two while the younger guy rides the bench. Our offensive coordinators seem to have been clueless.
I’ll go you one better…I really believe that in these big decisions, the ones where we get a lot of back and forth discussion on this board, I think that if the Jets had done what this board’s consensus was, we’d have been a much better team. I count GM hires, HC hires, and key draft picks in that category. Had the team just read this board, I don’t think we ever hire trash like Gase, I really believe that.
Make no mistake about it, Jets fans the world over better be prepared. Darnold IS going to win the Super Bowl. There's nothing in the AFC that can handle the Seahawks OR the Rams for that matter. The ONLY thing I have to look forward to is watching those bitches, up in New England, getting absolutely demolished by either one. I just think the Seahawks are on a roll no one is equipped to stop right now.
