He was OK. But every QB has dropped passes. Every QB has throwaways. Zach consistently has some of the worst accuracy marks in the NFL, including last week. He has the 2nd-worst CPOE in the NFL right now. He was last last season. The Conklin throw was also a terrible throw. It may be considered a drop, but Conklin was wide open, and Zach threw a bullet over his head. Yes, Conklin should catch that, but that was an inaccurate ball. He did a great job avoiding pressure. The arm talent and athleticism are there. When he throws in rhythm and gets the ball out quickly, I felt confident he would do a good job. And you hope that some of the inaccuracies can get cleaned up, especially on the short passes. That's fixable. But it was also a problem last year.
I used to think that Zach delivered a very "catchable" ball... but he does throw a few pineapples here & there.
Yeah... we've seen that too often haven't we. Some of his longer passes are kinda shitty as well. But man... every now & again he'll throw one that makes you wanna believe... he's "the guy".
Regardless of your take on Zach's performance he and the Jets have a lot to improve upon. Zach needs to make better decisions and throw less turnover worthy throws, Zach needs to clean up some mechanical issues, the receivers need to help him and not drop15% of his passes and most of all the OL needs to find away to get him a clean pocket. Without the later it will be a long year for Zach and for us. It was a decent start and a good benchmark. The question is where do we go from here? We can't have 22 pressures again. It might be weeks before Brown gets back. MLF needs to find a way to protect him these next few games or things could get a lot uglier than the Pitt game.
Opposing teams will attack the our weakness. It's up to LaFleur to scheme around it. Miami game will be an interesting test... they've gotten 7 sacks this season.
Zach was bad first three quarters and was otherworldly last 2 drives. Rust was a huge factor. His 4th quarter performance gives me hope. Onto Miami!
I'm cautiously optimistic on Zack's progression. I don't know if last year he reaches the level of play he did in the 4th quarter last game. His flaws seem correctable, or at least can be markedly improved upon. Short throws accuracy, being more careful about turnovers, and recognizing situational opportunities, should all improve with experience and better protection.
He sure did... and I knew he had it in him. Now he needs to demonstrate consistency in his play. It's time.
Before this last game, Zach had 171 passes without an interception. That was the longest streak among NFL quarterbacks. Criticizing him for being turnover-prone is so October, 2021.
Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't all quarterbacks in the league subject to dropped passes and throwaways? Is it only Jets quarterbacks who get an asterisk in their completion percentages?
Wilson did indeed have a 171 pass streak and he also cut his turnover worthy pass rate in half from the 4.8 percent he had the 1st 5 games last year but that does not mean that it is unfair to criticize him for having a 7 percent turnover worthy pass rate in game one this year. If we are going to praise him for his good play Sunday we also need to do the opposite for his bad play. He has to make better decisions over the long haul. Maybe a 7 percent rate is the best that can be expected under the circumstances of 22 pressures but regardless that number needs to improve a lot as we go forward whether it is adjustments by MLF, improvements by his teammates or better play and decisions by Zach.
Sabo breaks down 4 Zach plays over 22 minutes. Lot's of goodness here. Edit: If you want more Sabo. Sabo talks with Chrebet. It is repetitive from the 1st video but listening to Chrebet is always fun.
It is almost like you chose not to take the conversation as a whole and then apply the context @Noam mentions in his opening line. If somebody is slagging a players stats off in one single quarter, is it not fair to break down those stats and mention that his 2 for 8 included 4 drops and 2 throwaways, rather than the implied position that he couldn't hit his arse with a banjo. (Though I will say that the math is wrong as the sentence was 2 for 8 with 2 throwaways and 4 drops and an Int, so there is an extra throw required or a drop removed possibly) Now your post about asterisks would be fair if we were talking season-long stats, even full game stats but not in a solitary reply to a particular post. Context.
If it was the Conklin play it would be both a drop and an INT, so maybe not an extra throw. You're absolutely right though about context. If you're micro analysing stats you have to have context. Drops and throwaways don't make a significant difference over a season, but if you're trying to justify a QB was bad in a single game or half and 50% of the throws he made were dropped or throwaways, then it sure as hell does. If you want to make a true comparison take out all of them or adjust the stat based on what could reasonably be expected over a season - what the average rate of drops or throwaways is in the NFL across the season.
There are a lot of "but his stats weren't great, or he was horrible for the 1st 3 quarters..." Legends are made in this game in the 4th qtr, not the 1st 3. That is why people are so excited about it. If he can put 4 quarters together like that together, we'll have exactly what Chris Simms espoused about before he was drafted. I'm still very skeptical that he can stay healthy, but I would love nothing more than to eat my words on this one.
