With only a couple months until the season, and a horrible ZW being inevitable for the next 3 years, you should take this opportunity to find a hobby that causes you less stress or become a fan of a team you don’t hate. PS I notice you left out a lot of years since you mention Peyton as the starting point. Why did you leave out Eli and Alex Smith’s rookie years?
I think JD gave him some much better weapons going into Year 2. Hall, Wilson, the two tight-ends. How it all meshes is anyone's guess; but Wilson needs to be better, especially in terms of accuracy.
Spot on. If we get the Zach that played the 1st half of last season, we have issues. If our line is as weak at the Bengals, we may have issues…. But if we get the Zach from the 2nd half of last season, we’ll be fine. If Zach takes the traditional 2nd year leap, we’re goooood.
Because they weren't the worst qualifier as rookies. A.J. Feeley was the worst qualifier in 2004. Eli didn't have enough attempts to qualify. Kyle Orton was the worst qualifier in 2005. The point of this was enough throws to qualify and they really stunk.
I feel like you should fill us all in on the arbitrary standards you set so we can appreciate your research better. I’d also love to know why QBs who aren’t good enough to start their rookie year are inherently better than QBs who were good enough to start but obviously not good enough to win.
There's nothing arbitrary about my standards. I just went to pro-football-reference.com and sorted by QB rating and figured out who was a rookie each year. No rookie that has qualified and finished at the bottom of the league in QB rating has amounted to anything in the era since Peyton Manning was drafted. That's because when you make a lot of throws at the NFL level and suck it generally means you suck. To suggest that Zach Wilson is an exception to that rule makes no sense on the face of it. The guys you brought up, who did not ultimately suck were on their 3rd OC before their play got better enough to matter. Alex Smith was on his 2nd team. If the Jets want Zach Wilson to amount to anything they really have to do something different than they were last year. He really sucked trying to make the "simple" throws that Lafleur's offense called for.
Cool. Your standards aren’t arbitrary. So please, the suspense is killing me… what’s the cutoff? Eli and Smith played in 9 games their rookie years so it’s over 9 and Zach played in 13 so it’s at least that. What is your non arbitrary cutoff for determine if a rookie qb qualifies for your rankings?
Yeah... Zach has got to make those "simple" throws consistently... and I hope that it's a keen focus in camp. I have faith that Zach can be a good quarterback... his arm is just too good to give up on. But if he doesn't make that leap year two then he got to go.
I go to pro-football-reference.com and I sort by QB rating on the given year and I look to see who the bottom guy was in the year and if he was a rookie. Pro-football-reference.com takes all the QB's listed in the listing and spits out the list, cutting off the ineligible players for the year in the process. Try it for yourself.
If he can't make the simple throws why not try to build around his strengths instead? Russell Wilson doesn't make the simple throws either but then again he just refuses to throw them in most cases.
Ah I gotcha…my bad, I don’t use the filter on that site and honestly never noticed the option. You’re using PFRs standards so you don’t know what their cutoff is. FYI it’s 224 pass attempts for the years in question. The Giants got real lucky Eli didn’t throw the ball 28 more times his rookie season, there’s no way they win the SB 2x with him if he had. /s Thank you for having the patience to to explain to me where you got the cutoff…. But I don’t believe the correlation of your stats amount to causation Also AJ Feely wasn’t a rookie in 2004
Yeah I didn't use him. He was the lowest rated qualifier in 2004 and did not make the cut because not a rookie.
Gotcha. Not sure why you brought him up since you were talking about rookies but I understand where you’re coming from. Thank you.
I decided against my initial instinct of “why tf are you bringing up a non rookie qb when the conversation you started was about rookie QBs?” But I figure I’d save my anger for the next stupid comment you make, I’ll check back in tomorrow when I’m sure you’ll give me a hand full of options to choose from.
Because we’re the Jets I expect Zach to perform relatively poorly for about 6 games before he’s injured for the season. During that overall relatively poor performance he’ll have a few moments of decent play that some fans will call “flashes” and insist that in 2023 he’s gonna be awesome. The Jets will agree and have no backup plan again. Zach will fail, Douglas and Saleh will be fired and we’ll sign some has been decent vet like Kirk Cousins that’ll squeak us into the playoffs maybe once or twice. I mean we’re the Jets, people. How can you not understand by now this is exactly how it’s going to go for us.
Square peg, round hole. instead of wishing and hoping Zach Wilson figures it out I wish they’d get a QB that can make the “simple throws” in LaFleurs offense
