He had more time in the pocket than he allowed and he rolls out to the TE/RB side away from the three receivers. The play dies as soon as he breaks the pocket when he doesn’t need to.
It looked like he had time to me. And he left the pocket on his own accord…. On the botched 4th down play
I haven't seen the All22 for this but it looks like both safeties are out of the picture along with the 3 receivers you mention. Zach threw to a single covered receiver not named Michael Carter and it had a chance of conversion. I could think of worse plays in his film library.
He still cuts the field into a small quarter by rolling out of a clean pocket. I will say that it doesn’t look like we had anyone on the play crossing across the field which doesn’t make sense.
No argument there. I do finally have hope that it's slowing down for him even a little, that's something.
Yeah, I want to say I've seen an All-22 clip of that play where all three of the receivers routes who started on the trips side (left side) terminated on the left side. I'll try to see if I can find it. Not sure why one of the trips receivers isn't running some sort of crosser to give Zach an option over the middle/on the right side of the field though.
Here's a part of Joe Blewett's breakdown of Zach's game vs Philly. Looks like they only give you half of the breakdown unless you're a Jets X-Factor subscriber.
I wanna say "man, why!!!!???" but I realize that not everyone views such things as I do - so I will say "congrats, that's great!!!" (earnestly).
As for throwing 4 yards on 4th and 5 - that's a NYJ specialty. Going back all the way to Boomer and Rob Moore throwing a 1 yard pass on 4th and 2 (yes, really) - but when you're that far from the play (middle of the field, under pressure) I put those types of things more on the receiver for not running beyond the marker than I do the QB. How can the QB in a split second have the depth perception to know he's a couple of feet short? Plus, it was 4th down, can't take the sack so just throw it and hope for the best.
See I dont know how people can blame Conklin or the playcaller on that play. Clearly Conklin is not the 1st or even 2nd option. He's hanging out in the flat. The QB is looking at the other side of the field. That ball needs to come out to one of the expensive, more talented pass catchers that are beyond 5 yards as the play was designed... Instead the QB doesn't throw to them, he runs the opposite way of those guys even, and Conklin recognizes that he's by default become the ONLY option. "Oh shit I better get to the sticks now" and the QB throws it when he's not there yet for a 4 yard gain. it is no different than an interception.
I'm not disputing that in any way, I blame Zach for being in that position in the first place. I wasn't necessarily speaking about this particular play, but I realize I made it seem as if I was. In general, a lot of the time a receiver runs a route and cuts across half a yard or a yard shy of the first down, it's difficult for a quarterback to judge that. In this particular case, you're right, no question.
