Here's a good All-22 look at the early misfire to GW. I believe this was Zach's 2nd attempt of the game, and it's a solid play call and executed well. Diggs undercuts GW's crossing route, so GW wisely cuts it off and tries to sit down for Zach. It even looks like Zach is in lock-step with GW here because as soon as GW throttles down, Zach starts his throwing motion. It's just a little off the mark. GW is able to get his fingertips on the ball but that's it. Not gonna beat him up too much for this one and I'll soften my stance a little from my original post where I said, "Hard to tell from this angle so I'm unsure if this was just an inaccurate pass by Zach or if there was a miscommunication here by ZW and GW and GW cut the route off too early. Either way, not a good play by Zach and potentially not a good play by GW." I will somewhat stand by my initial assessment though, it's not a good play by Zach because he missed an open receiver but it was his 2nd throw of the game on a boot action throwing back across his body to a WR who cut the route off and sat down. Great QBs make that throw though so I can't give him a full pass for it, even if I do acknowledge it's a difficult pass to complete.
Hindsight is always 20/20, my friend. Clearly that was the wrong decision but I'm never going to beat up a GM for taking a shot on a QB. They're just so important in today's NFL.
Actually let's stop saying Sauce and the D line did nothing. Even the OL against the Cowboys rush. Sauce forced a fumbled on Lamb (and luckily the Cowboys RG scooped it 30 yds down the field - very unlikely) and almost got a Pick 6 on Dak Prescot if he hauled it in. The D didn't have a good day in the turnover ratio - but the game started with the Jets Offense going on two 3-and-outs, and then 1st down and then 3-and out. Saleh is full of bs to say "opportunities" they had 3 possessions in the 1st quarter where they couldn't move the ball over the 50.
Don’t disagree with your points but Sauce had a give me interception that he missed and he was way off his game giving over 100 yards catching to one receiver alone. I also blame the coaching staff for that. The BS game plan of not putting the best CB on the best WR is flawed, also neither of our elite CB choose to defend the slot at all thanks to the game plan is even more egregious. We got touched. Bottom line, most of our stars under achieved when we needed them most. And we got completely out coached.
Fair points, KY Jets Fan I hope NY fans can reset like Saleh said he wanted for Zach, this year. Zach was supposed to sit and learn this year. Like the team should have done from the start. Coming in cold against Buffalo without 1st team reps, in a home stadium where the crowd has lustfully hated on him, has celebrated his mentor & replacements, and winning is a feat. Not getting killed against Lawrence Taylor and the league's toughest defense, and looking fine until garbage time is positive momentum, too. He's passing the eye test for needed improvements. If you can shed your expectations of what a top pick looks like, and reset them for a guy coming back from last year's emotional a$$ kicking, he's looking above what most of us would expect. New England is scary. The second toughest defense we'll face this year. Especially with Belichek having a thing for killing Jets and destroying their young QBs confidence. We need to escape this game without the home fan base crucifying him. With strong complementary football, we will win. Please let him reset. The fan base needs to support him instead of being a part of a wave that destroys yet another young Jet QB.
I watched the game yesterday night again on mute...Just the Key plays (I sort of have a life, NOT). Zach played much better, but there were sacks he took that if he just stepped up and ran in the gap. he would have exploited the pass rush easily. He did do it a number of times but there were couple miss opportunities where Parsons came off the edge and he's still looking down the field. Zach is still so mentally screwed - but it seems it's getting better – and I've been a harsh Zach critic.
There was no way we were gonna win that game with the defensive scheme that Ulbrich dialed up. Dak was taking everything we gave them underneath... and no adjustments were made. And not giving Duane Brown help on the left side vs. Parsons was just stupid. Blaming Zach is the easy answer... and he does kinda suck... but we sucked in a lot of ways. There's a lot of blame to go around. Hackett came up with no creative plays to ameliorate the pass rush. Get Gipson involved on some jet sweeps... let's see more play action... get the ball out quicker. And for fucks sake... where was Breece?
That is exactly what I said in my post to you. Not putting the best CB on the best receiver is a flawed concept. Also we need help in the slot and the game plan does not engage either CB.
Spot on. Could not have said that any better. There in lies my biggest concern. We get absolutely out coached by the top guys and we do not adjust much on the fly at all.
Another look at Zach's 2nd passing attempt in the 3rd quarter here where he connects with Lazard for 14 from the All-22 angles. Excellent play by Lazard and Zach. Lazard is running a slot fade on this play but wisely breaks that off into sort of a comeback route when he realizes Zach is scrambling out to his side. Zach puts it on the money. Well done by both. Also worth pointing out that Zach does a good job of going through his reads on this play. It appears that Conklin or GW is supposed to be the primary target here (my money is on Conklin) but Zach doesn't force that ball into a tight window as Vander Esch plays Conklin very well on the out route. Cook's man is also playing way off the ball and muddies any potential throw to GW on a slot fade. It's about this time that the left side EDGE gets a hand on Zach's throwing arm which prompts him to move up in the pocket a bit and then scramble out to the right side of the field. A great example of the pocket navigation/awareness improvement I've been discussing with Zach.
I don’t disagree but we just don’t really play that sort of man to man scheme. We play a cover 3 matchup zone and utilize Sauce’s length to take away flag to hook to flats. If you man up Sauce on Lamb, Reed on the weakside receiver then you’re probably leaving one of Whitehead, Tony Adams or Mosley/Williams in a bad mismatch.
You don't have to apologize for anything you've said or haven't said. I know who you are and understand where you're coming from. Let me ask you a question...How is he supposed to elevate the rest of the team, when he's not a good fit for the offense that the HC chose to run, when he's having to change his footwork from play-to-play to adapt to different formations and situations while playing, when he's having to totally change his style of play, when the OC is incompetent, and when all of that has caused him to develop bad habits and regress? IMO that's just not realistic. This was supposed to be a reset year, a chance for him to learn the things that he should have learned his rookie season, but didn't get to because we had an inexperienced idiot for OC, and the mistakes the HC and GM made. He shouldn't even be playing now, so imo it's absurd to expect him to play at a high level or elevate anyone. His play is what it is at the moment. IMO we have to focus on the fact that he is improving, that he is learning and growing. It's not what we or anyone wanted. I doubt that Zach even wants to play now knowing what he doesn't know. The competitive side of him does, but I feel pretty strongly that he knows that he shouldn't be on the field until he has gotten to where he needs to be, i.e., able to read the Ds, make good, quick decisions and get the ball out quickly and accurately. How one views his play depends upon whether one is a glass half empty or glass half full type person, and whether one view him as a work in progress or expecting him to play at the level of a developed QB. Seen through the filter of the latter, then yes, his play was terrible, but seen through the filter of the former, one can see the progress and it's encouraging I know that you're still rooting for him, and I appreciate that fact, as that's what's best for the team. It has been unfair to Zach, but that's not the point. It is what it is. Zach is doing his best to deal with the situation with patience, understanding, character, and hard work. I respect him for that and am still rooting for him. Further, I still believe that he will develop into a very good starting QB. It may not be for the Jets, but I believe that it's going to happen.
I disagree that this was a "bad" play from Zach. There was a defender practically on top of him. He's running hard to his right and throwing quickly back to the left. Maybe Mahomes completes that pass, and maybe 1-2 others, but I don't think most QBs in the NFL complete that pass. Perhaps when GW saw that Zach was having to run for his life, he should have come back towards Zach rather than just stopping. If anything, I'd put the blame on GW, but in this situation,I don't blame either. It was a bang-bang play and was an incompletion. I know that you're not beating him up for it, but even calling it a bad play by Zach is mistaken imo.
