Couple of things: 1) Not a ZW fan, but this wasn’t a game to get on him for. It’s hard for any QB to be successful when they are pressured as much as he was in that game. Terrible pass blocking, bad play calling, no running game, defense that can’t get off the field. Just awful. 2) that Breece play was was classic Zach. Instead of throwing that pass with some touch he rifles it in there, making it an impossible catch.
I agree with your first point but slightly disagree with your 2nd. Zach's job is to get the ball to his playmakers. He did that and Breece should've caught it. Did it have a little too much mustard? Maybe, but Breece gets paid to play ball too and I bet if you asked Breece, he agrees that's one he should've caught.
If you watch this and still conclude that Zach has shown no growth, and he never will, you're just completely biased and closeminded.
I hate that idea. Earn your stats, one side or the other. That said, Zach was done no favors by the several drops that certainly should've been completions that would've significantly changed his Comp %.
IMO too much mustard is not a valid reason for a receiver to not catch the ball. I think Rodgers early in his career threw the ball with a lot of mustard. Favre did it his whole career, and there have been others. Their receivers adapted and caught the ball. They got some broken fingers along the way, but they caught the ball. On the play in question, imo Zach did a great job just finding Breece and getting the ball out quickly to him. Zach was about to get clobbered. Also by getting the ball to Breece quickly, he gave him a chance to catch the ball cleanly without getting hammered by the LB that was a few yards behind him, and a chance to make a move to make the LB miss. IMO the bottom line is that if Zach had thrown the ball softer and Breece got hammered, Zach's naysayers would have been criticizing him for getting Breece hammered, or if Zach had tried to throw it slower and had gotten hit in the progress and either fumbled and the ball gone up in the air and then been intercepted, they would have killed Zach for that. They don't want to see any progress or improvement, or give him any credit for good throws/plays, because that would mean that they have to admit that they were possibly wrong about Zach. We all know there are posters here who NEVER admit when they're wrong. Their ego won't allow it.
The Breece pass was not a rifle, it was a very soft touch. It was not on the chest and Breece had to extend his hands to catch it, which is why I think he dropped it, but it was a good soft touch Breece had to catch. An argument could be made that Zach should have attempted the original read with GW, but AVT got beat like a drum so fast, and Zach felt the pressure right away. Becton ended up bailing AVT out a bit, but still, at the moment, can't blame Zach here. Btw, AVT had sneaky terrible game here, particularly at pass pro. This was a huge gain that could have been had if he did not get beat so fast. Costed a TD too. For these of you who say we need to move him a tackle, you remember AVT of last year. So far this year AVT cannot pass protect even at guard. I would not be moving him anywhere until he gets back to normal in that area.
With Rodgers injured Zach Wilson is the best healthy quarterback on our roster despite his many flaws. If he gets injured I do not believe the next man up could win any game on our schedule this year. We are going to play the Bills again in the regular season and we have seen them injure our starting quarterback in two consecutive games as they took out Mike White the first time and Aaron Rodgers the second time. Pretending just for a moment that Aaron Rodgers can somehow coach up Zach and that Hackett knows anything about play calling what is our plan if Zach gets hurt behind our swiss cheese offensive line? How can JD and our coaching staff ignore our QB depth problem just because Aaron Rodgers is friends with the borderline third stringer we signed from the Packers? Why do I think that Zach will fail or get hurt and JD will be allowed to draft another QB in round one instead of drafting a tackle? Are we really going to give JD the opportunity to ruin a third young QB next year after he already went in on both Zach and Rodgers?
Oh I think they (most anyway) know what they're watching, but they refuse to admit it. "There are none so blind as he who will not see".
If it comes to that (drafting a QB) the only reason I would be for it is because you have to keep trying to get a good one, and supposedly this year's class is a very deep and good one. The problem of course is will Douglas be able to identify one that will work out, and will he then FINALLY commit to doing everything possible to make sure he does? Those two questions haven't been answered positively in decades for the Jets.
I agree that most do know what they're watching, but I can tell by some fans' comments that they don't.
Or they know very well what they are watching - cherry picked plays that represent a message the compiler is trying to sell. Throw in an over the top title and the actual "TRUTH" is quite apparent. If the guy still has the capability to become the real thing, why the need to oversell it every week? Let his actions speak for themselves - all of them.
