ESPN (via Rich Crimini) is saying:

"The Jets include an offset in every contract, which provides financial protection if they release the player before the contract is complete....An offset clause allows a team to cut a player before the end of his four-year contract is completed and have the remaining money reduced by the amount of his next contract. This is deeply rooted in the Jets' negotiating philosophy, and they don't want to create a precedent."

The offset amount is also returned to the cap figure. Keep this in mind while trashing everything Jets

This is either a Neil Glat or a Johnson thing. It has spanned multiple GM's so Joe Douglas is just following orders. In reality why would Douglas care about offset's because if the Jets were cutting Wilson he would be in the same direction as Wilson - out the door. He is tied to Wilson as is Saleh. This will get done but you hate to lose any time that Wilson can have to bond with the team..

Buffalo Bills opening training camp press conference with Brandon Beane (GM) and Sean McDermott happened earlier today. Both started off their press conferences with condolences for the Knapp family. Classy move. Some things are bigger than football.

So Wilson is the last unsigned 1st round draft pick in the league because the Jets want to make sure they can still cut him within 4 years

Thought they believed in the kid. guess not that much

    such a poorly run organization

Just like with Darnold, this isn't a huge deal. If Wilson is going to be a star, missing a couple practices wont stop that. Same if he is going to be a bust.

I don't know how many other rookies have this language included, but this just feels like the Jets being stringent for almost no reason.

This is supposed to be a "new era" of sorts. I'm not overly concerned, but I'd like to get him into camp for the optics of it.

"It's believed that 30 of the 32 teams typically include an offset with contracts that have guaranteed money. The Jacksonville Jaguars and Los Angeles Rams are the only teams that typically don't include offset language in their contracts... An offset clause allows a team to cut a player before the end of his four-year contract is completed and have the remaining money reduced by the amount of his next contract. This is deeply rooted in the Jets' negotiating philosophy, and they don't want to create a precedent... Without an offset, a cut player collects the guarantee from his old team, plus the money he receives from his new team -- aka double dipping."

Not sure why this is a sticking point for Zach. Seems standard for VAST majority of the teams, and contract is fully guaranteed, even if he gets cut. He just can't DOUBLE dip. Sounds reasonable. A bit disappointed in Zach missing critical practice time over this.

Did Lance get a fully guaranteed contract?

Well put--and why our front office is incapable of understanding this is why the NYJ have been/are a trainwreck.

What the hell is the probability? --Zach would have to turn out like Ryan Leaf or Jamarcus Russell for an offset to have any relevance.

If they’re concerned about the hypothetical cutting of their #2 pick in 4 years impacting the cap then why are they also trying to spread his signing bonus to next year which will be counted against next years cap when we have plenty of room left now?

    Because:
    1. Lawrence had no offset language
    2. Fields had no offset language.
    3. Trey Lance signed today and we will find out if an offset was included.

If lance had no offset then the player picked before and after ZW had no offset as well as the 4th QB. The standard in that case seems pretty clear.

But if Lance did have offset language then it becomes murky. 2 QBs without and 1 with. The Jets then at least have an argument.

It's my opinion that the signing bonus in regard to the cap would get spread across 4 years regardless of when he actually gets the money. The NYJ seem to be in a cash-flow problem this year unless they are just using this as a negotiation ploy to get the offset language in.

I hope they realize that if other fans are like me how close they are to permanently losing a significant chunk of their fanbase. If this regime turns into another mess, I'm done for good.

Its not a double standard if you cut someone.

The offset is a hinge against having the pay all of the guaranteed money if you cut someone who can still find work. It can go both ways. If Zach gets cut that means we didn't want him. But if someone else does want him - why should that cost Zach? Like I said before, its essentially trying to shoehorn a cut into a trade, even though they are very different outcomes.

Also its starting to look like first round QBs are special cases and dropping offset language for them doesn't have to mean doing it for everyone.

Are there offsets in guaranteed contracts that don’t involve rookies? I mean is it common?

Yes its fairly common. I just edited my last post to suggest dropping offsets for 1st round QBs might be turning into special cases, that doesn't mean it has to be done for every player.

This is hardly the way to start off a supposed new era, but let's take this with a grain of salt. It sounds like the team and Wilson's agent are negotiating through the media. Since controversy sells, the media is more than happy to carry water for each side, ramp things up and paint a picture of an unresolvable impasse. Let's wait a few more days before getting excited.
