At this point it doesn't matter what other teams have done. Not to mention the Bengals are the cheapest franchise in the history of the league (maybe an exaggeration?) so we can't really use them as a basis. He's unsigned and camp is about to start. This is the wrong hill to die on for a bad franchise. It also sends a bad message to the player because the offset language really just protects the team from some financial and cap burdens if they cut the guy. We drafted this kid because the organization thinks he's the guy and also believe he was better than three other first round QBs. IMHO, the offset was a smokescreen and the real issue was when Zach would get his bonus. All in all, as Shakespeare would say, much ado about nothing. Only in Jetsland. The team needs to make progress in the team culture. There is no reason these negociations had to spill over into a holdout, even if only for two days. The players need to believe that management is their partner.

I understand but there is no binding reason that the Johnsons have to follow any "precedent" this sets. They can - and should - treat case individually and on its merits. In this case, Zach merits being treated the same as Lawrence and Fields regarding offsets and deferred bonuses.
I just finished listening to the "Can't Wait" podcast today and Connor Hughes said that Fields has "partial offset language" in his contract. Not entirely sure what that means, or how partial and full offsets differ, but it sounds like the only rookie QB with no offset language whatsoever is Lawrence, which is standard operating procedure for the Jags.
To me, this is the bigger issue. Why do the Jets need to play hardball and squeeze every penny out of every negotiation? It's not like they're in any danger of losing money. In fact, despite the fact that they haven't sniffed a championship in over half a century - that's right over half a CENTURY! - they're among the richest franchises in sports. This is the root of SOJ, and as long as it remains in the soil, it will sprout over and over.
Not entirely true. Correct, the Jets play hardball with their own players but they spend like drunken sailors to every FA cast off. Thats why they never win shit but always at the top of the headlines
