Good point. And I would add, most Jets fans are so starved for even a playoff, one and done, berth they're willing to sacrifice the development of a QB who might be the answer to sustained playoff success and SB participation and hopefully victories. Douglas and Saleh believe Zach to be that guy, and until they're convinced he's not, they're going to stick with the plan of developing him along those lines. No amount of strident assertions or stats from fans will alter that course. Making that observation isn't a "declaration".
I don’t think he’d be good in this offense at all….he needs something like what the Ravens did for Lamar in his first few years…the dude can run…let him run. He has a strong arm but he’s is not a quick hit or precision passer which is what our offense needs. He would suck in this scheme I think.
Well said by you and @abyzmul. I don't think Saleh or Douglas want to derail the season just so Zach can get experience either. I think they believe he will keep improving and eventually become why they are winning. And I agree.
Zach's had games like this before: very good but unspectacular, though the sort of game where if he can do it most of the time, he'll be our franchise QB. And then the next couple weeks he goes back to being awful. I hope this time is different, but we have to see how he does after the bye to know if this is really a step forward.
Teams that are winning this year are running the ball. Running the ball is not just a declaration on where our QB is in his development.
He's going to do fine after the bye if the Jets stick to the game plan that works. He's going to blow chunks if they expect the offense to run through him in a pass-heavy attack. I'm not one of the Lafleur critics. I think he's done pretty well with what he has been given. However if he goes back to the game plan that lost the first Pats game the Jets are fairly likely to lose the second one as well. And that will be Lafleur's fault if it comes to pass (no pun intended.)
The is correct. It's worth noting that Moore only took 10 offensive snaps against NE (17%) and 27 against Buffalo (45%).
Someone posted that he missed a block, refused to block, made a less than enthusiastic attempt or something to that effect early in the NE game and after that he did not play much. He has been criticized in film reviews for a lot of routes this year where he has seemed to ad lib. Last game for example in Blewett's review at the goal line (on the last offensive play) Blewett said the play design was for Moore to run a shallow cross or slant to the middle of the field but when pressed at the line he ran an out basically running into the same spot as the other WR giving Zach no where to go.I have seen it noted that in previous film reviews there was questionable spacing where Moore was involved. We all know about the lazy route against Pitt on the INT. I know last year especially early on we saw a number of questionable routes by Moore. This system requires a lot out of WRs. It requires precise route running and timing, and blocking. Zach often struggles when the timing is off. he wants to hit that back foot and let it go. Look at the Conklin incomplete on 3rd down last week for a good example. Conklin did an extra move and was just a bit slow getting into his break causing Zack to have to pull it down, hesitate, wait and then throw incomplete with poor mechanics. Most of all it requires trust. It seems that it will take some time and dedication for Moore to earn that trust back. The sad thing is many of the beat writers that watched camp this year said Moore was by far the best player on the team all camp and people expected a real breakout year from him. I really hope they can get Moore involved early and get his head back in the game against NE. He could use some positive momentum. I would love to see him used on some end arounds and bubble screens to just get him involved. Remember the run he had against Miami (or was it Philly?) last year on an end around. He is explosive and the Jets could really use a home run threat.
He only missed the Denver game. (Healthy scratch). In New England he was given 10 snaps and 0 targets. Vs. Buffalo 27 snaps and 1 target
There were many voices here with the opinion that 'nothing else matters this season except Zach's development'. Don't hear that much once we started stacking wins... Greedy bastards!
I think it had more to do with the defense than the gameplan. New England blitzes a lot and Buffalo doesnt From the Athletic "This season, Wilson has completed 21 percent of his passes under pressure, which ranks last out of 32 qualified QBs and is nearly 17 points lower than the next-worst quarterback, Kirk Cousins.”
It had to do with only running the ball 15 times and passing it 41. When you do this the defense can blitz all day long without fear of getting caught upfield.
But what about Streveler? LOL. The fact is I like Streveler and he seems like a good guy and a good teammate. I don't know enough about QBs or Steveler to know why he's not a starter in the NFL, but it does appear as if he has a slow release.
When the QB throws 3 interceptions on your side of the field you have to play from behind. When you are playing from behind you have to throw or you just run the clock out for your opponent. Before Wilson gave that game away it was the standard gameplan we see every week
At the time that ZW threw his first pick the Jets had run the ball 8 times and the pick was his 18th throw.
That's certainly not the gameplan that was working though. And of course it utterly failed in the end.
Nania is spot on with this one I feel. In fact I agree with him most of the time, with the only disagreement being Denver game, where he rated Zach on about the same level as 4 INT NE game last year. Other than that analysis I think are very good. A couple of plays to note in this game, where I originally had a different view when watching without all 22. That first pass to Mims I initially thought he missed by a foot. But the all 22 film shows that Mims slowed down. That was a big time throw and a perfect pass, which Mims if he did a better job should have had. Could have been a big time completion. Another play is sack fumble TO. That was something that Zach really needs study for next time, it could have cost us the game. He had Mims open for a TD and was looking that way, but took his eyes off too early, and then didn't protect the ball. Huge difference in outcome. Thankfully Sauce got him the ball back in similar spot, and this time Zach delviered, but it should have been 6 to begin with instead of TO. Overall, I am very encouraged by what I have seen in this game. I expected Zach to rebound, but given the quality of opponents' defense I didn't think he would be able to have the game he just had, which was very good by any measure. Now, he has to string these good games together and I think we will be all right at QB position this year and long term.
Not to say Zach doesn't need to continue to learn and improve, there is more to the passing game than just the QB. When the receivers don't run the correct routes, or run them half assed, that is definitely going to throw Zach's - or any QB's - timing off, and this is especially a problem for a young QB who is trying to learn how hit these timed routes at NFL speeds. Zach is making progress on this, but Moore hasn't helped - Zach or himself - we'll see where this leads, but there are other receivers who want the ball and are willing to do what is asked of them.
