Probably no one. We didn't sign a backup when there were good backups available. We'll roll with Mike White who will be making his first career start in 4 years with the incomparable Josh Johnson waiting to save the day. Really valuable time for our young QB to sit and learn from some seasoned, accomplished, well-respected veterans.
Am I wrong in thinking that hit on the sideline was pure horseshit by the linebacker intentionally aiming at his leg and knee and should have been flagged. Having said that, I’m Ok with sitting Zach the season, if a vet with something to show Wilson is available. Further, while this fan base is shitting all over JD and the offense, can you guys please tell me why the D is so bad all of the sudden, people get their contracts re done and then they disappear. Coaching and execution is front and center on this issue, and making players accountable. That is not on JD, except perhaps on the actual selection of the CS.
Even though we don’t have a vet to fill in or mentor Zach right now, he’s still going to have 2-4 weeks to dive into his tape and learn.
This is phenomenal news! Certainly not ideal to be out, but this could have been a heck of a lot worse. He will probably end up missing 3 games and can start taking reps with the brace in a week or so. In the mean time we evaluate whether White is any good.
Would anyone else have have been shocked if he made it through all 17 games? Hopefully this can be a helpful "break" for him ultimately. Let's see more of their very capable no. 2 QB Mike White! But I wouldn't be surprised if Josh Johnson ends up starting sooner than later.
Glad it wasn't anything insane, but he really should sit the full 4. No need to have him come back vs Buffalo to get our doors blown off and put him in harms way. Let him come back vs Houston.
I cannot fathom how that even happened. It's just pure incompetence. There were plenty of vets available, just terrible decision making
WHY? Who cares if we win any games without Zach? This season is ALL about his development. If hes hurt id rather lose all the games hes out and get a better draft pick. Very smart move for Douglas NOT to sign a veteran QB cuz we dont need one.
I personally doubt your hypothesis. There have been many rookies sitting behind below average qb's who still benefit from observing. It's nowhere near a requirement to have an excellent qb to observe. This said it is important to mentor a young player and that is apparently missing right now at the coaching staff level.
If you think Wilson is the only one who needs development you haven't been paying attention. This is a team game and you need to get your best people on the field every single time to help them all develop.
I agree, for some reason we completely ignored the back-up spot for some reason. Maybe it was financial? Maybe incompetence? Maybe intentional? I was on the Nick Mullens bandwagon for a while this offseason. He could have been a nice addition as he was somewhat familiar with the system what I don know is that the Jets will be picking top 5 (probably top 3) again this year...
Sooner or later we need to stop hoping for higher draft picks (we've had lots of high picks lately and look where we are) and start hoping for wins that can change this miserable, losing culture. Success breeds success and failure breeds failure. I think this mid-season break could be a great thing for Zach, but I don't want him coming back after four weeks to a sad sack team that has lost every week and is in full-on self-pity mode. If he could come back to a team that was buzzing with a bit of energy after a win or two and trending upwards, that would be awesome. I don't give a flying fuck where we draft next April. Let's win some football games.
Because there are 10 other Jets on the field at a given time not named Zach Wilson that need development. Wilson being out hurts our entire team.
You aren't sick of losing non-stop, and looking forward to the draft each year yet? I am. It's awful.
Um, I remember quite a few regulars here insisting we didn't need a veteran backup and even applauding JD for not "wasting a roster spot" on someone who might create a QB controversy.
The whole "controversy" line of thinking is ridiculous; every single guy on every team has had to compete for a place on the field since he started playing the game. If a guy's ego is too fragile to face up to the competition why would you want him on the team at all?
