Fields got away with a couple of those. 1 to Ruckert and another to Reynolds I believe. It is playing with fire and this one to Wilson was egregious.
And this is why I'm tempering expectations with Fields. Every ball he threw worked yesterday. That's not going to be the case every week. Obviously very very encouraged and even moreso because the OC knew what he was doing but two of those could have easily been picked and the third could have resulted in a concussed WR with broken ribs.
that’s why they need Lazard to be active. Lazard isn’t great but Terrell Owens ain’t walking through that door. If Fields is going to play this way they need a big bodied wide receiver on the outside
Offense I was generally pleased with. Putting up 32 points against a good defense is a huge positive. O-line looked good. Breece looked like a stud. Receivers are worrying. Wilson was a playmaker. I'm not holding his drop against him. That hit by Ramsey should be used by all 32 teams to teach DBs how to hit receivers. Perfectly timed and my God was there power in that hit. Otherwise, the fact that Breece was our next best receiver tells you how much our receiving corps was getting open. Folk looked old. Still hit a 51 yarder but meh. Defensive line and Sauce showed up but that was about it. Negatives (in no particular order): Braelon Allen was relatively useless. 5/6 rushes for jack. Defense didn't show up (Except for Sauce. Rodgers went 1/5 against him.). Pass defense elsewhere was nowhere to be found. Rodgers looked like his old self despite getting hit quite a bit. Burning a timeout on a 2 pt conversion is rough. Glenn or someone must have hated the defensive scheme against us on that play but ouch. Another wasted timeout later in the game. Some undisciplined penalties but we've seen worse (not exactly a positive). Offensive scheme was solid. Team had plenty of life in it but it's game 1 and usually the defense doesn't give up on the season until about halfway through.
I am not sure this is a fair takeaway from the performance we witnessed. Lamar and Hurts are not perfect either. If Fields plays anywhere near to what we saw yesterday somewhat consistently we have our young FQB, and he will be in Pro Bowl conversation.
I'm not making up that he blew some reads. That happened. But again if he was making the right read consistently he'd be Lamar or Hurts. If we got yesterday's performance every week then I couldn't possibly be happier with a two-year bridge QB signing.
Yeah if he’s good every single week he will make the pro bowl. lol These are the kinds of things I log in to read
Maybe I misunderstood, when you suggested a Pro Bowl level player like Hurts does not blow reads and Fields did. Do we agree this was a Pro Bowl level performance from Fields?
I was pleasantly surprised by Fields…I am very happy with the OC…for once our offense looked like it had a clue, had an identity, and it looked like the OC was calling plays to match his talent for the most part. A few fuckups, most notably in the 2 point conversions…how do you not put the ball in Fields’ hands on a rollout with a TE streaking by the goal line and a WR behind him and let Fields roll out and either run it in or toss it in depending on what he sees? Anyway, despite that I was pleased with the offensive scheme and coaching…and man that left side of the OL with Olu and Simpson were bad boys…they were mauling. Love that. As much as I like the offensive coaching, I hated the defensive schemes…firstly, I’ve been chirping about losing DJ Reed all summer, and man was I proven right. Stephens is terrible. He should not be starting. No ball awareness. I don’t understand why we stuck with the soft zone look and just let receivers run free all fucking day. And then if you’re going to play soft coverage, you need to come up and tackle and we absolutely sucked at that. I can understand playing soft zone against a dynamic running QB like Allen because at least the defense has their eyes on the QB…but against someone like AR who is not going to be running a lot, you can play man…they should have manned Sauce up on DK Metcalf and then given safety help to Stephens…you can afford do play man when the QB is not going to just behind your back. I thought the defensive coaching was poor. And as for AG, I did NOT like the decision to go for 2 in the first quarter…take the points…the time to take a risk is if you’re down by a lot or its later in the game. Not the first quarter. That being said, as much as I loved Breece Hall yesterday, I don’t know what happened to Allen…he looked weak…that guy should get a 4th and 1 like 9 out of 10 times, but yesterday I did not see a 240 pound bruiser. And finally, AG emphasized discipline and accountability…doesn’t feel like we got enough of that yesterday so will be watching to see what happens this week.
that is such an absurd question and comparison. You don’t make the pro bowl from 1 good game in a home loss. It would be like a mediocre slugger going 3-4 with a home run and a double and asking people if you think he could be Barry bonds based on that performance
Not sure why you are struggling to follow, but let me explain again. @BroadwayAaron is suggesting a guy like Hurts (a Pro Bowl type player) rarely misses a read even in single game to the extent Fields missed yesterday, which is what separates the two. Meaning even in that single game yesterday this wasn't "3-4 with a home run and a double". To me it is very obvious it was. Whether he is FQB or not remains to be seen as there is 16 more games to play, but yesterday certainly was every bit as good as Hurts. Others suggest it was not. That is the source of the disagreement. Hopefully this clarifies.
he was not every bit as good as Hurts. Hurts does what Fields did yesterday every single week, including in the Super Bowl. A home loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers isn’t his signature performance. That is what is absurd about your takes on the situation.
I agree with you that we had to move on, despite the fact that I would have had no problem keeping him from a QB-play standpoint. With a new coaching staff, he had to go. It would not be fair for a young new Offensive Coordinator to have to be dictating to a hall of fame QB. That's far from ideal. Where I don't agree with you is minimizing Rodgers performance. Sure we gave him open receivers, but many QB's younger than he fail to hit them effortlessly. The man can still throw a beautiful ball. I'll miss that.
My biggest takeways: (a) I think sadly that game might have been as good as we can expect from this roster (fumble aside). (b) the roster is still too reliant on undisciplined players. Jets are not a "smart" team and it shows in key moments. It's going to take more roster overhaul and time to change this. (c) I think the WR group is as weak as I thought it was, that Breece was a bit hungrier than I gave him credit for, and that the Jets Safeties and LBs may also be the weakest of their position groups in the NFL. I really don't think our starters at those two positions could start on many NFL teams. The rookie S is going to be starting soon. Tony Adams and Cisco sucked, pure and simple.
I don't even know how to respond to this line of thinking. It's one game. Fields has been in the league four years. If one game suggests a complete reversal from what we've seen throughout his career then I dunno, there's probably not much room for discussion here. Also this should have made it very easy to NOT misunderstand: All posted within the last 18 hours.
Yes…Fields has many doubters…not surprising given his history. I am one of them. That being said, I was pleased with his performance, I think he played well, and if he can sustain that level of play, then I think he’ll be a pretty good QB for us. Let’s see. I have been a very vocal critic of his based on his play, but I’ve also said I’d love to be proven wrong. And if he plays like he did yesterday on a consistent basis, then I’ll be happy. Of course, the accuracy is still an issue…for example that early throw to GW on the out route…he threw it behind GW, who had to kind of slide and twist to catch the ball. So that play goes down as a completion and the stats show it as such, but in reality, it was a bad throw…had that ball been thrown in front of GW, he can catch it in stride and turn upfield and get the first down. It wasn’t, and he couldn’t get the first down. That’s the kind of difference…the stats will show a completion but in that particular case, the stats don’t tell the whole story. But even still…I was pleasantly surprised with Fields, and I’ll take that kind of performance…he is not the reason we lost yesterday. I think plenty of us feel the same…
