The guy who has won a SB, has an overall winning record with multiple playoff appearances underachieved, you don’t want him. But then you want a guy who sued the NFL crying racism (completely unfounded) when he didn’t get a job, never made the playoffs as a HC, has an overall losing record, alienated his rookie QB, and had a terrible relationship with his coaches to the point that ye’s going to have a hard time hiring his own staff again. Yeah, make it make sense.
Aaron Rodgers and those packers teams did not win because of McCarthy, they won because of Rodgers. That is proven by Aaron winning 2 more mvps the second McCarthy left and rookie head coach came in. McCarthy picked neither Aaron nor Dak, he walked into those situations already and both situations they failed in the biggest moments over and over again. Dak and Aaron are themselves whether McCarthy is there or not so I don’t understand how you can say he raises the floor when you can’t point to anything you know that he’s responsible for in either situation.
McCarthy developed Rodgers. To say he rode his coattails is dumb, Rodgers was a backup who was very raw when McCarthy arrived
Graziano on ESPN is predicting all the landing spots this morning. Here are his predictions (don’t shoot the messenger) Raiders - Ben Johnson Bears - Brian Flores Saints - Aaron Glenn Jags - Joe Brady Cowgirls- Kellen Moore Jets - Arthur Smith
I apologize for not reading through all 78 pages. Who is conducting our HC and GM interviews? Is Woody actually doing it? Do we know? "Unqualified Hirers" is probably a hallmark of this organization. Is Chris Johnson involved this time?
not many... -Feels like the Steelers havent had a good QB since Roethlisberger and they are usually pretty good so I'll say Tomlin -Shanahan is usually good at coaching up his QBs with the 49ers, although Purdy looks pretty good, so idk if he qualifies -Sadly Vrabel should probably get a mention for getting homefield advantage and multiple playoff wins with Ryan Tannehill... I'm just sticking to modern guys, Parcells, Gibbs, Schottenheimer, Reeves, guys like that had their moments without good QB play but were talking 30 years ago so not really worth discussing
Yeah agreed. The point I was making is I’m not sure why we ding coaches for having success with a good QB’s. McCarthy would far and away really be the best we’ve had here in a long time. He runs a good offense. His career record with Cooper Rush is 9-5, a guy who led the MAC in interceptions twice. The Packers were 7-9 in 2017 which is the year Rodgers got hurt and then Rodgers went to war to get him ousted the following year. I think we all know how difficult Rodgers is to work with by now..
This is true. The Packers only ever won more than 12 games once under McCarthy. They also only ever made the NFC Championship 3 times. In the 3 years after Mcarthy left the Packers won 13 games all three seasons and made the NFC championship twice. If Rodgers had better coaching all those years he would have won more titles. McCarthy was not great outside of the title year
Yeah…Smith is not super inspiring to be sure, but I’d prefer him to Flores…I seriously do not understand the love for Flores…his record is not great, no playoffs, defensive guy, alienated his players, etc. Oh…and his defense just melted down in the playoffs. No thanks. If we’re going to go defense, I would prefer Spags or even Glenn…and I’m not super excited about Glenn only because we’ve tried first time DC hires time after time and our problems have continued to be shitty offenses which these guys don’t know how to fix. But at least Glenn is a former Jet, he knows the city and the media, and his personality and leadership style seem to be very strong, so I at least would be willing to give him a shot if he’s the hire. Smith is not the way I’d go…not super impressed with his work at Atlanta as HC so not doing cartwheels here. I don’t think it’s a great list of HC candidates, and I’m super frustrated that we haven’t even interviewed some offensive guys like Monken, Kingsbury, Coen, etc. I’d go get one of those guys, with probably Kingsbury as my top choice as he already has some HC experience and can hopefully build on that as opposed to having to learn it all on the job again. I would also talk to McCarthy if he would take the call…not sure how he feels about us after we passed on him but I’d for sure make the call…I do see him as a raise the floor type guy…he may not be the Super Bowl guy but after the decades of mediocrity, I do think he’d raise the bar for us and would prefer him over Arthur Smith. But for sure, LAST year was the year to throw the book at Harbaugh…a PROVEN game changer and winner everywhere he’s been. THAT’S the guy you give the keys to. But yeah…Woody.
So they only won because of Rodgers, but didn't underachieve in the playoffs because of Rodgers? Interesting. Didn't they choke in the playoffs in '19 and 20 as well? My memory's fuzzy but they were big home favorites against Tampa Bay that year.
Yes, I don't think coaches should be penalized for having good QBs either. By that logic Bill Belichick isn't a good coach.
If you look at Mike Mccarthy's record he is a good coach, the best coach available on the market right now, if you look at the Jets track record every first time coach or limited experience coach the Jets have hired has been pure dogshit. So why not do a 360 pivot and actually try something different this time? Or are we going to keep throwing darts blind and never make the playoffs? Mike Mccarthy in his sleep is better than the dogshit the Woodys keep hiring. He may not be Andy Reid but I will take average or above average over dogshit any day. And whats your point about coaches and good qb's, Adam Gase was given a quarterback who may be a Mvp this season and he couldn't do anything with him, Robert Saleh was given a hall of fame Qb and a good roster and couldn't do anything. Bad coaches suck no matter what.
I don't think they have gone into great detail about who is involved in the interviews but Woody is definitely sitting at the middle of the conference table with Hymie on one side side of him and Chris Johnson on the other for every one of them, I'd stake my life on it. I also think more than a few of them have been Zoom interviews.
I'm not a huge fan of how Flores handled everything in Miami but sometimes you need an asshole in the building. The optimistic view on Flores would be that he overachieved relative to his roster in Miami and learned lessons from his mistakes there. I'm ready for some discipline after 3 years of Saleh's day camp. Having said that, I'm a bit concerned that Flores is potentially a classic Jets over-correction from the previous coach. He may be too much of a disciplinarian. All in all, I'm just not really in love with any of the candidates we've interviewed. I'd love Kingsbury because he has HC experience and experience calling a great offense with a young QB. We either don't have enough interest in him to interview him or (more likely) he rejected our request. I'm not sure which is worse.
I'm all in on McCarthy. He's the best option for where we are as a franchise right now. I don't want a rookie HC, I don't want a defensive HC. Get Mike in here to help stabilize the franchise. If 5 years from now we're complaining that we can take the next step in the playoffs that is a WORLD DIFFERENCE from where we are today. Reminds me of how ppl spoke about Andy Reid when he left Philly. We would kill for him now. Get a professional in here. Now. Today. Right now. Please.
