Many or if not most of you are going to hate this, but the more I really think about it, the more I want to give Rex another shot. My reasoning is simple: He WANTS to be here. There is no amount of money in the world that can buy passion. Sure, other candidates might settle for the job, but to Rex, this is the ONLY job. There is something to be said about that. It almost reminds me of Dan Campbell and the Lions. Dan would die for his team and his players lay it all on the line for him each and every week. Reminds me so much of Rex's first go-around.
It's the only job for Rex because he knows we're the only franchise that would be dumb enough to hire him. Rex wasn't even that good when he was here. If it weren't for the Colts laying down and literally letting his team make the playoffs, he would have only made it to the postseason once in six years. He could never find a QB, never was able to identify a decent OC, and once Mangini's players began leaving and were replaced by Rex's players, the team began freefalling. Hiring Rex will set this franchise back by a substantial amount. It's the worst move that they could make.
Hardly you brought up Dorsey name. Josh Allen was one of the top QBs in the league when Dorsey was there. You don't know how to make a point that's what is entertaining. You just throw stuff out there where you can pivot either direction without explaining it.
I absolutely HATE when fans’ argument against Rex as a coach is that he only won w/ Mangini’s players. I’m sure there is plenty evidence available to support the stance that Rex is not good coach; why choose that one? It’s lazy. Essentially, you are saying he won when he had talent. What coach wins w/o talent? All that suggests is that he’s shouldn’t be our GM. It doesn’t tell me he’s going to be a bad coach for this current team, who like “Mangini’s team” has talent. That line of argument also inadvertently concedes that he did more with that roster than the Mangenius did himself. On a semi related note, I’ve always felt his best coaching year was 2013 when we went 8-8. For what it’s worth, that roster was ass.
If you look at Rex's body of work, he overachieved 3 seasons (2009, 2010, 2013). Two seasons he was given horrible rosters and it went par for the course (2012, 2014). The only season where he underachieved was 2011. That was a playoff team and his lone blunder. He can clearly coach when he has players.
Ya'll are talking about teams from over 10 years ago... the game has changed and Rex Ryan's system is obsolete. It would be a terrible hire but I am expecting it
You stated any offensive coordinator can look good and run a good offense with Josh Allen at QB. I pointed out that’s not true, because the offense was so bad last year that Ken Dorsey got fired half way through last season in Buffalo.
It's extremely thorough as the list is very long and hit on basically every available top guy out there minus Ben Johnson. The guy is actually doing the Jets a favor by stating this upfront. Why waste time with a bogus interview when you already know the guy has no interest in the job? That's just silly and a waste of time. There's plenty of other good names on their interview list. Ben Johnson just happens to have his pick of the litter this go round and that doesn't include the Jets.
Rex’s teams overachieved in the playoffs for sure in 2009 and 2010 (specifically 2010 and beating Brady/Manning) but let’s not act like those weren’t really good rosters. 2013 was a good coaching job but it also points to some of the problems with Rex’s coaching style. He creates a lot of high highs for his players and low lows for them throughout the season. It’s an emotional rollercoaster with that style of coaching that can be exhausting. They beat the 11-5 Saints at home and the Pats, but also four different 4-12 teams and the 6-10 Bills (lost to them too). Split with the 8-8 Dolphins. I also question if he can pick a good offensive staff..
They aren't requesting to interview Todd Monken either Rex Ryan though, nobody else remotely interested, interviewed today
What I remember about Rex. He came from Baltimore which had a top defense at the time and he brought a lot of those players including Bart Scott with him and that gave the Jets a respectable if aging defense. He bragged that he liked "smash mouth" football, with emphasis on running the ball and had some success despite the mounting evidence that passing is what wins in the NFL. He also tried to instill a "kick ass" philosophy throughout the team which resulted in an inordinate number of unnecessary roughness and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties which had the cumulative effect of killing drives. The lack of discipline also resulted in many off-sides penalties. He was a proponent of the wildcat which he often used at the worst times. He demanded Sanchez finish a meaningless pre-season game, where Sanchez as the No. 1 QB and was totally unprepared to play in the game. The result was a season ending injury and the rise of Geno Smith. After he left the NY Jets, he went on to coach the Bills, bragging about buying a home in the "snowiest" section of Buffalo. He failed there too. His bluster personality was/is a good fit for NYC and the sports media, so he'll be entertaining but I doubt the Jets will win many football games.
i cant believe this whole thread is about rex, who has no business as an nfl head coach at this point. i would love to see flores here, however he will throw woody thru a plate glass window on whatever floor their offices are on and i dont want to see the guy get charged with murder. the fact that woody hasnt hired a director of football operations and stepped away tells me everything i need to know. he will hire a young coach, which may not happen but he will surely hire a CHEAP coach because he doesnt like spending money on his coaching staff and would rather someone prove themselves before he has to pay them. its been this way his entire ownership.
Would you hire Joe Brady for the Jets head coach? Keep in mind your definition of bad is different since you have higher expectations. The Bills bad offense was a better offense than I have seen with the Jets in recent history.
You know what was actually a key factor to the Jets success in 2009 & 2010? Mike Westhoff. Without Westhoff the Jets don't win as many games nor win some of these playoff games. (Cromarties return in Indy was the sole reason they won that at the end, if he didnt they likely lose). Unfortunately I dont think Westhoff would come back with Rex as hes older so that would be a key loss. Rex should have never gone to buffalo. That was an idiotic decision. Atlanta wanted Rex at that time which would have probably worked great for him as he would have had a QB, but the owner had a death in the family so they halted all hiring for a few weeks and Rex wasn't patient enough to wait. Instead he goes to the Bills and the Falcons hire Dan Quinn and the rest is history; 28-3.
