It's embarrassing that either one of them are even getting interviews for this position. Considering that this is the first time that The 33rd Team has done this in an official capacity, I'm not sure that they're really making a good name for themselves in this instance by attaching themselves to a process that is bringing in Rivera and Ryan as potentially serious candidates.
Off the top of my head I'll rank the candidates of interest so far: GM 1.) Dimitroff 2.) No one else of merit so far Head Coach 1.) Flores/Vrabel 2.) No one else of merit so far Dimitroff/Vrabel or Dimitroff/Flores aren't the worst combos but they're also not Top 10 in the league worthy. I'd put them somewhere around 14-18 with either of these pairings. I'm not sure if Woody Johnson wants to swing for the fences or if he just wants to keep the seats in the stadium filled. If he wants the former then this list is quite uninspiring. We still have to wait for the season to end which may be a while for Ben Johnson and the other hottest available names on the market. This is the current state of the NY Jets franchise. It's rather blah. It can change but that's entirely up to Woodrow and how big he wants to go with this next move. Otherwise this franchise will mire in mediocrity for another 5 years minimum.
Rex Ryan should be in talks for being DC, not head coach. What did that guy do to earn him a spot back over here? He inherited his team from Mangini and it pretty much got worse every single year, not to mention he's been out of coaching for a decade for a reason. The man can coach defense, sure, but I don't want another team that's all defense with no offense.
If he were at all serious about making a big move, he would have done the right thing and fired Saleh and Douglas back in January and handed Jim Harbaugh a blank check to come rescue this team. He clearly didn't trust the people he left in place at the end of last season, as evidenced by how quickly he jettisoned Saleh at the beginning of the season. He should have cut bait in January and desperately tried to do whatever he could to get Harbaugh in the building.
I do not even want Rex as defensive coordinator either, look at Zimmer, he has not coached defense since the Cowboys days and he got hired back and he is not doing a good job so far
Nothing wrong with bringing these guys in for an interview. You’re paying a consulting firm, might as well get your moneys worth and make them start interviewing. It’s not like they can interview anyone in the NFL…
That's all in the past. We're talking about who their coach is going to be in 2025. Forget all that woulda, coulda, shoulda stuff. The ball is in Woody and the Jets court. This move will dictate the state of this franchise for years to come. There is still time to get it right. As I mentioned, at this point, there's not many other names out there. The Jets will have to wait until the season ends now for other potential good candidates. Now it's just a waiting game.
He’s not in contention because he’s qualified, he’s in contention because he’s one of the only people that would accept the job. I’d be really interested to see who he would hire as his staff. Being out of the league for like 8 or 9 years and losing relationships with who’s currently in the coaching circles may be a big problem.
Browns are letting Vrabel do HC interviews immediately. will be interesting to see if he interviews with us this week. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6027101/2024/12/30/mike-vrabel-head-coaching-interviews/
Let's stop pretending that we will hire a real Head Coach. I vote Howdy Doody - no pretenses about having a real dummy in charge.
There's no question we're going to end up with a bottom of the barrel candidate. It'll most likely be a defensive coach who has never been a head coach before, since that's all that Woody has hired since he has been the owner of the team. Aaron Glenn would be the one I would keep my eye on in this process. I very much doubt that Woody could resist the allure of not only bringing in another defensive coach, but also bringing a former Jet home to be the one to break the playoff drought. It would be a hire made for the back pages, which is all this ownership cares about anyway.
Apparently coaches on playoff teams can interview starting January 8 but it has to be through video call and can't be in person.
There's no Andy Reid or Jim Harbaugh sitting there unfortunately. I don't think anyone is in love with any particular candidate nor should they be
Rivera and Rex Ryan had more success than Vrabel and were in worse situations when they took over. Vrabel took over a team weeks removed from the playoffs and had less success than Ryan of Rivera had.
