    Ok and we're 3-1.

    Cold hard facts.

Yeah, against Cleveland, Indy, Philly, and Miami, teams a combined 5-11. Wait til we play a good team (which luckily we don't have many on the schedule this year since we're playing the two worst divisions in football, the AFC South and NFC East). Fitzpatrick will be exposed.

That's taking a big leap of faith in both Petty's ability and the team's belief that he is the for-sure guy of the future. Both are huge unknowns. Let's stick to facts:

Geno was the starting QB before getting punched, and Fitz was the #2 in camp. When Geno got punched, Petty become a lukewarm #2 because the team tried to bring in veterans to nab the #2 spot. At no point did Petty get considered to start. Reports out of camp were that he was very green and had a big transition ahead of him to the NFL game.

Based on those facts, I am not sure how you can credibly take the position you did in your post. The franchise still viewed Geno as the young QB they were pinning their hopes on heading into the training camp. Petty has yet to get that type of support, nor is there any evidence to suggest he ever will.

I think the "the Geno lovers" have made a lot of great points here and I find their arguments much more reasoned than the "Geno sucks" crowd, whose negativity is really annoying. That said, I can't see Bowles even considering a QB change right now.

Geno MAY be better in the short and long term, and Geno MAY still have support in the locker room, and Geno MIGHT'VE cleaned up his errors, but those are all unknowns and speculation.

What we KNOW is that we are 3-1 with Fitz, and have a lot of positive momentum going into the bye week. Why change QBs and risk upsetting that momentum? Fitz MUST be the starter for the foreseeable future, and when really sucks or gets injured, that is when we see Geno.

Ahhhhh we should be playing teams not in our schedule.

    Got it.

So much for cold hard facts.

The irony here is I haven't called for Fitz to be benched, although I probably should. I'm just looking into the future, where I see Fitz getting us blown out against a good team.

Development of the QB position often goes on hold in the presence of a talented veteran team when the young guy(s) haven't shown enough to make playing them a no-brainer.

This Jets team could win 10, maybe 11 games with a game manager at QB who is capable of just keeping them on course. Whether Fitzpatrick can stand up to that requirement all season isn't clear but it's pretty clear that nothing in Geno's two years of play suggests that he knows how to manage a game yet. This team can't afford on the job game manager training at this point.

If Geno had shown the potential to be a star QB then there's no question that the Jets would be better off with him on the field over the game manager but he hasn't shown that. The Atlanta game early in his career flashed the potential but then it vanished for a season and a half until the Fin game. Those 2 games look like the outliers, not the likely result.

Is it not a fact that the teams we've played are bad? I'm looking into the future when we play good teams. I'm not comfortable with Fitzpatrick.

He's been well below average against bad teams, how do you think he'll play against the Pats? They'll beat us by two touchdowns.

Fitz, the game manager who is third in the league in interceptions. Isn't the point of a game manager to limit mistakes? Once again, these mistakes will bite us in the ass against better teams.

I am giving my opinion having watched both players in college and in the pros and how they conduct themselves and their relative strengths.

Petty has as good or better arm than Geno, is a more accurate passer, is more athletic and most importantly has a much higher football IQ. And has superior leadership skills.

    You're a Geno fan.

Please do not mention credibility again.

I can live with certain interceptions in moderation, I truly can. Ints that are pushing the ball down the field to try loosen up the defense have purpose. It's like moving the runner over in MLB. The interceptions Geno has thrown serve zero purpose. His niche is throwing pick 6's, taking bad sacks, carelessness with the ball while running or being flushed.

I can't live with all the strike outs. They serve no purpose. Fitz is less imperfect than Geno and I'll take his limitations over Smiths inability to to control his natural ability. It gives this team a better chance to win. Only Jet fans would consider debating a QB switch at 3-1 heading into our bye....for fuck sake

Same, I don't think Bowles can bench Fitz right now the way the season has played out. But I do think Geno is the better option and would give the offense a higher ceiling. Like I said in another thread, at some point Fitz's limitations are going to make Bowles feel as desperate as Bill O'Brien felt last season, when he benched Fitz in the middle of Houston's playoff contention and without any massive meltdowns. At 3-1 Bowles is not feeling desperate. Once the schedule toughens, he will.

I saw Fitzpatrick lead the Jets on three TD drives of 73 yards or more. I saw him lead two other drives where the Jets got points. I'm sorry I just don't see Fitzterrible in Sunday morning's performance.

Yeah, ESPN gave him credit for scrambling for key 3rd downs on two of the TD drives. HELLO! What kind of idiot doesn't credit him with great results for scrambling under pressure on 3rd down on those TD drives and keeping the drives alive?

If PFF had given him a middling grade I guess I could have seen it, but the grade they gave him was ludicrous on the face of it. It was the kind of grade that makes you re-evaluate the value a site like PFF actually brings to the table.

This is somethign else I've been hearing.

It is interesting to note that in the AFC right now you've got the Pats and the Bengals, and a very shaky Denver team that does not inspire confidence. No one really looks all that great, and below those three that's right are the Jets. I can maybe see San Diego making a run, and the Colts will win their division most likely. Not sure if Vick can manage the Steelers while BR is out. But Kansas City and the Ravens are 1-3? Wow.

Point being the conference is not exactly loaded with great teams. In this situation the Jets could well do some damage.

Your opinion based on watching them in college (and the pros) cannot be substituted for how the organization views these players, as you tried to do. The organization in 2015 showed that they still viewed Geno as the (potential) future and wanted him to start. The organization in 2015 took Petty in the 4th round and have given no indication so far that they view him as anything more than a 3rd string guy with the potential to develop into a good backup. Unless you have some inside scoop that we don't, stop acting like it is a fact that the team is resting their future with Petty. That's just a load of BS.

I'm not sure I would describe myself as a Geno fan. I'm not a Fitzpatrick fan though. And I think Geno still has potential to be a good player in these circumstances.

You're also fantasizing about what Geno could do against these good teams.

That view is just as flawed.

its easy to say that now.. sitting here with Geno Smith who shit all over himself in his NFL snaps and Petty who has never taken an NFL snap. coming in though Smith was the better prospect. Theres just no way to say Petty had a better arm and was more athletic than Geno Smith, the prospect, coming in the draft. Football IQ & leadership I'll give you

I don't know if you looked at the schedule yet but there aren't very many better teams still to play. If the Jets make the playoffs I'll take my chances with the guy who got us there.

Geno is not a good leader. He's not a good passer. He doesn't make good decisions under pressure. All of these things are proven at this point. Could he make the jump and become better at any of these? Sure, but there's no reason to assume that he will. We've seen a lot of games out of him already and we have a pretty good idea of what we have in him. If he makes incremental improvements he's still going to be a bad QB. He needs to make a great jump to become a good QB and I don't see any reason to watch a jumping competition out of him with this team at this point unless we have no other choice.

If we have to put him out there we have to put him out there and everybody should be rooting hard for him to make that jump. However if we don't have to put him out there we really shouldn't do that because if he misses the jump we're all screwed (again.)
