How is it not logical to think that Geno could show any progress in year 3? It's pretty funny considering the last game he played for us he posted a perfect QB rating and was slinging it all over the field....Yes in week 17 but it happened in an NFL game. He generally played pretty well when he finally got put back into the lineup late last season

I think it's bullshit to say that "Smith fans" don't understand the game very well. Fitz has his strengths and we all get that....It's just that his weaknesses cannot be fixed whereas Geno's weaknesses are somewhat correctable...I say somewhat because through experience, hardwork, and being placed in a better situation he can overcome some of his poor decisions at the QB position that have hurt him in the past

It's not just the offensive roster that helps a QB...the coaching staff, offensive philosophy, and our defense playing lights out on the other side. All of these factors can help relieve pressure off a QB

Maybe Geno held onto the ball because no one could get open? Shit, I would hold onto the ball too if my targets were a gimpy Eric Decker, Greg Salas, Jeremy Kerley, Jeff Cumberland, and Bilal Powell. And you want to talk about unforced mistakes? Fitzpatrick already has six interceptions and is lucky he hasn't thrown ten. These heaves into double coverage downfield will eventually start to get picked off.

And you're apparently another one downplaying Brandon Marshall saying "it's not a much different look." The offense is COMPLETELY different with him in it! And you want to talk about "Smith fans don't understand the game very well?" Pot, meet kettle.

    Ubiquitous,

"You are severely underestimating how good and important Brandon Marshall is, as if he's a marginal starter. He is a game-changing, huge-bodied playmaker whose presence alone opens up Eric Decker and the entire offense. "

Heh. Again, I am all for the Marshall signing. But let's not overdo it here. Marshall did not open it up for Decker when Decker did not even play against Philly. Kerley made some plays, but I still don't know who the third receiver is on this team.

And Marshall opens up the entire O, as in the running game? Jets were ranked sixth in rushing last year and are currently ranked 9th. No opening up there.

The Jets O is a work in progress. The hope is that Smith can play the third wideout position, and perhaps someone else can become a dependable 4th. But right now the CS prefers Kerley on the bench while they look for improvement in other players, Decker is dinged up and Marshall has some flaws.

    Let's not go crazy here.

I've seen some lunacy on the board, but the whole "Brandon Marshall is just a guy" is one of the more baffling positions I have ever seen our fanbase take. Do people not realize what an absolute gamechanger this guy is? Wow.

Three of Fitzpatrick's Ints were either tipped balls or PI was not called when it should have been.

I answered your Marshall "point" in my previous post.

Baffling is a fucking understatement. You would think of all the NFL fanbases who would appreciate a big stud wide receiver, it would be the Jets, who haven't had a guy like Marshall maybe ever.

The Fitz supporters are looking at QB performance in a vacuum.

Again, no one said Marshall is not an upgrade. You are merely overstating the efffect on the overall offense roster.

Were you a Jet fan last year and the year before? You think Smith walked out the back of the end zone because crappy wideouts made him do it? Throwing to defensive linemen?

You don't "see" what we're dealing with when you're 3-1 and have a very real possibility of being 6-2 at the half way mark with your current QB. You only see how your back-up is when you're sucking or when you've locked up HFA throughout the playoffs. Until then you play to the strengths of your QB who is NOT giving away games like a free promotion like Geno has so far.

I know, seriously, Marshall is a monster. OK so he had an ill-advised lateral trying to make something happen on a day when the rest of the team crapped the bed. Doesn't make him less of a player. And as you point out, we have NEVER had a guy as good as him. Like what else do these fans want? Does Fitz deserve to be throwing to a WR corps of Julio Jones, AJ Green, and Antonio Brown? Maybe then he wouldn't be on pace for 24 INTs.

You know what is ironic here too - these same fans blindly defending Fitz were probably laughing at both him and the teams who previously played him in prior seasons...

I'm not absolving Smith of blame. I've said multiple times in this thread that he's been terrible in the past. It's logical to say that Geno was bad but is still a better option than Fitzpatrick given his youth and arm talent. Cuz Fitzpatrick is bad too.

The only one that was arguably not his fault was the one Marshall short-armed. But even that was a bit high and off target (which is hard to do when Marshall is your target). All of the other INTs were the result of poor throws or poor decisions. He has also had numerous other balls dropped by defenders, and even one fortuitous play where both Eagle defenders in position for an easy INT ran into each other. His high INT total has been earned, and then some.

I continue to attribute this to 6 seasons of inconsistent young QB play. Fans got sick of it. But veteran retread mediocre QB play is just as harmful to a team's prospects, and arguably more harmful to the franchise's prospects since you are putting development of the QB position on hold to make a run with a player you know has a low ceiling.

Bye the same token should Fitz not get credit for dropped passes and at least 2 dropped TDs?

If you're going to play the "he shoulda had more INTs" then be fair and give him credit for the drops too.

Unless you only want to count the bad fake stats and not the good fake stats.

    Which I'm guessing you do.

No one said it is illogical to think any player might show progress from year to year. The real question is how likely is it that Smith would show material progress, significant enough to make him likely to become a decent NFL Qb. The answer to that is not very.

I also disagree that Smith's problems are correctible. As in again likely to be corrected. THe problem here is not that any one of them might be correctable. It is whether he is likely to improve in enough areas to reach that acceptable Qb play standard.

He has no feel for the pocket or even for where he and the team are on the field sometimes. He hold the ball too long. He doens't know how to read pass defenses. He does not look in command in the huddle. He does not have leadership qualities, and fails to inspire confidence and loyalty in his teammates.

It is just too unlikely he fixes enough of those things.

QBR is way off on this, and I know why. It gave too much weight to his running first downs, and it also cannot factor in the quality of the throws (i.e. the multitude of off-target throws to open guys that just get blindly recorded as an incompletion). I disagree that it was the worst QB performance but it had to be bottom 10. It was mediocre, we all saw it.

We aren't putting the development of Petty on hold, everyone has acknowledged that he needs to sit a year and learn.

Fitz is the perfect guy for Petty to learn from. Not a physical specimen but all the leadership and intelligence and preparation traits you want your developmental QB in waiting to be exposed to.

Okay, let's play cold hard stats, since you're right, it's not fair to project TDs and picks that didn't happen.

Fitz is third in the league with 6 INTs, behind Jameis Winston and Andrew Luck who have 7.

Fitz is sixth worst in the league with 6.37 yards per attempt. This is with a good offensive line, excellent receivers, and a good running game. HE FUCKING SUCKS.

Marshall is a great receiver but he's very erratic for a great receiver. He drops catchable balls, he makes unforced errors and he's generally a huge wild card on any given play. The odds are good he's going to really help you but there's always the chance he's going to screw up.

We're much better off with him on the field but there have been moments this year where he hurt the Jets.

talk about cherry picking, and you are quite wrong about ALL the other Ints. Didn't you see Barrow chuck SMith out of the way before he intercepted the pass? Blatant PI. One of the other Philly int's was also a tipped pass.

But your implication is also that there were no ALMOST interceptoins for Smith over the whole two years he played. There were plenty of them. But none of his interceptions were tipped.
