That's exactly it. His arm leaves a bit to be desired...his decision making on the other hand is the true problem. I just don't think he's smart enough to overcome his physical limitations with intelligent game management. He has no leadership quality to boot. His face and body language always give the impression of defeat. I know this has been discussed a billion times, but the mere fact that none of his team mates had his back during his locker room UFC debut, speaks volumes about who Geno is.
Getting open, running good routes are just as important as catching the ball. The best player he's had do that is Decker, aside from that its been below average.
And while that's true, like I said, Geno didn't exactly out-class them. He was equally as bad. They're not #1 receivers, and he's not a #1 QB. He's a sketchy backup at best.
The Jets defense was fine on Sunday. They gave up 10 points not counting the very short field that Marshalls "fumble" gave to the Eagles. The key to the Jets season is the offense reliably being good for 20+ points a game, without giving the other team 7 in the process.
Eeeeeexactly. The D was fine. The Eagles ran the ball and got yards with the change up between backs, but they never really accomplished much, because of the D. The Jets need to score high 20s reliably to even think about being a contender. And with the pats in the mix. scoring in the 30s would be very desirable. I think if we have Decker and Marshall, guys who can fight for the ball, and yards, we can live with Fitz being a 10-20 yard passer in the high 70%-80% completion range. Get the running game going, and they don't need to throw into double and triple coverage 40 yards down field. Small ball can win games.
T the only problem is that when teams know that your only passing 10-20 yards, they can put 8 in the box and stuff the run game.
This is why we should expect Fitzpatrick to keep heaving up bombs that give us the heaves. If he doesn't take shots down the field the offense will just shut down.
Funny, I posted the other day that the D only really gave up 10. I think the further you get away from the game it just becomes a score. My point was really about Fitz. Heck, if he is 2 TDs behind we are probably in trouble. Much less 3 and a FG.
Smith Fans constantly bleat that he had no support, ignoring the Jets had the 6th best rushing attack last year. Which probably would have been even better if the Qb was more of a threat. And in fact he was one of the worst long ball passers in the league. We saw plenty of 8 and even 9 in the box against him, and he still sucked getting it downfield. On pressure, this is the same observation I have been making about him going back to 13. the sole exception was that night game against Atlanta. But whenever else the games really count, when the Jets are still in play meaning before they are de facto or in fact eliminated, he plays like shit. And on your second sentence, this is the other thing Smith Fans simply do not understand. His problems have been of his own making. He is the master of the unforced error. Tipped balls leading to interceptions, infrequent drops, the OL not giving him an average amont of time to get it out of there - these have not been his problems. If they were I wold feel differently about him. But since his problems are of his own making, I gave up on him a long time ago. Smith is too long a shot to improve. Time to move on. Past time.
....But we saw improvement in Smith as has already been stated. The Miami game last year withstanding, he carried that momentum into the preseason. I'm not ready to give up on Geno. If you think, with a stellar defense, we're going better than 7/9 with Fitzpatrick at the helm, you're grossly mistaking. There is a reason he has not stuck on a team you know!
Jesus Christ. Please stop with the Miami game. Whoopie - Smith played great in a meaningless game against a team that had it's golf clubs packed for a few weeks already. That's the measuring stick Smith fans insist we use. That and some practices where he was allegedly good. Forget the games when they still mattered. Forget the games against teams who gave a rats ass. THE MIAMI GAME!!!11!
Oh my goodness....he is elite #2. Borderline #1. And I supported that claim with a sound argument. All you do is avoid my questions and reasoning.
I think many people that don't want Geno to replace Fitz just have their minds made up that Geno is awful, will always be awful and that is that While he may not ever amount to what we're looking for, and I'll concede that there's a pretty good chance he won't, I just think that the downside of rolling the dice is negligible He's had more awful moments than good but if he can just severely limit the horrendous moments, he will be a better overall player for us than what Fitz can offer I'm willing to see how it goes for a few weeks
Smith could kill the season in a few weeks. How is that a negligible downside??? For myself, I don't pretend that Smith has no chance to be any better. I just think the odds are too much against it. Meanwhile the team has a winning record without him. You simply do not change qb's under these circumstances. WHich is why the CS has not and will not.
The correct answer is that Geno didn't have a lot of support. If you're going to be a good QB in the NFL you can get by with not a lot of support and look decent doing it. If you have no offensive line, well then you're dead and so is your career most likely. If you have no playmakers, well then you're not going to look spectacular and you'll be doing a lot of checking down, throwing it away and generally taking what you can get. Geno has had a reasonable offensive line. He's had a playmaker here and there and a bunch of generally mediocre options to throw the ball too. He should have been able to look better than bottom of the barrel given what he's had to work with. It's on him that he's looked so bad in many of his starts. He didn't have great support, there's no question that's the case, but if you're going to play QB in the NFL you manage not to look really bad when you're playing with a mediocre mix of players. He's not the first guy in history to look bad his first few years in an extended audition. There are even a few people who looked bad and turned into Hall of Fame QB's. Those guys were 1st round picks and generally high 1st round picks. Their franchise had no choice but to nursemaid them through the bad early years and hope things got better. Geno isn't in that category. If he gets on the field again he better come out looking like he belongs on the field in a big way because there's no nursemaid for him in the Jets organization right now. Mark Sanchez, BTW, didn't look any better than Geno after his first regular season. The reason he got over the hump initially was he did have great support. he had more support than any NFL QB has a right to ask for, with a great running game and veteran WR's brought in on a nonstop carousel to try to give him solid options to throw too. He had a possession WR playing TE also who bailed him out often when he needed it. He had a solid to great defense. It didn't matter when the support began to break up like a melting iceberg drifting out too sea. You have to be able to look good in the NFL with ok tools, nothing special just enough to get by. If you can't do that then you're not a franchise QB.
The fact is we know what Fitz will do. We know what Geno has done. What Fitz will do is better than what Geno has done. We cannot base the future of 52 players and the coaches on what Geno might do. Everyone cites the Atlanta and the Miami games: two teams with permanent prevent defenses. Geno played about 27 or 28 other games his first two years, and did not distinguish himself
Decision making can be an issue for Smith while he improved from year 1, he was still inconsistent in that regard. Improved decision making comes with time and experience, what I want to see is stark improvement. I'm not expecting Aaron Rodgers but I want to see him look much better than he's looked up to this point.
I'm surprised after that great game in Miami last year Decker isnt wearing a "Geno Magic" shirt. He must be a Geno hater too.
