This thread is really great. I love the trade ideas, like Revis for Calvin Johnson and a second. The Lions would't even field a call for Calvin.
For the right deal, I'd happily say goodbye to Mevi$. Jets need to stockpile draft picks and start building from the ground up. Overpaying for a corner, as great as he may be, is stupid. They proved it with how effective their secondary was this year without him. What was the last team to win the SB due to an highly paid CB? Can they win with help from that position? Of course. But what team has won BECAUSE of that position?
Take out the red lines and you may have some takers. Revis is still the best CB in the game when he returns, but this is simply unrealistic. For example, I'd like to trade Brady for a #1st rounder and J.J. Watt, no way in hell I can drug enough Texas FO folks to make that happen.
One thing to consider is that another injury in 2013 would annihilate Revis' chances of scoring "the" contract. He can still get it now despite what happened last year, but if he were to use his leverage to prevent the Jets from trading OR resigning him, then he still needs to play out the 2013 season before he gets his pay day. After taking an injury like he just did, I wonder if that is a chance he's willing to take...
no such trickery going on here. If you take a quick run through the better Pats forums (I know, sounds like an oxymoron, right?) you'll find most Pats fans wishing for Rex to sabotage/block a trade in an attempt to save his skin in 2013. There are very few teams, that can -- and should -- afford a $14m CB, no matter how good he may be. Jets aren't one of those teams (not sure if ANY are!).
True x 10000. Brady & McD will simply throw away from Revis, or take him out on a 15+ route to clear the middle for Herb/Gronk/Vereen/Welker/Woodhead. It's your basic 1st class problem - Revis is so good that fewer throws are made his way. That lowers his win contribution, and makes his salary more of an overpay. That's why Cro is so important to the Jets offense, but oops -- his contract runs until 2014 and at $8+m/year, he was a top 10 paid CB too. When you got 2 corners taking up 1/6 or (gulp) 1/5 of your cap with no QB and no dominant rusher (as good as Coples can be, and Wilkerson already is), how are you going to fill the safety and LB spots?
Besides, he can't take a pay cut, he can agree to restructure which would spread the cap hit over even more years...but remember, him restructuring to lower the cap last year is what is tying the jets to him this year.
let me ask you guys a question. IF the Jets were to retain Revis, what kind of numbers are you looking at? what's too much? how many years? etc 3 yr/40 million would give him 13.3 mil a year which would make him the highest paid corner I believe (which is what he wants, correct?)
There is no doubt the team could afford to sign Revis. However, a cornerback is not worth it on our defense. We will wind up restructuring Cro's contract, and he will be our #1. Once we trade Revis, we will be able to build our team to help our offense, and our defense, which will assist the other cornerbacks on the team. However, at a fraction of the cost. This is all business, and trading Revis is flipping an asset. Nothing less, nothing more.
You do that by getting less quality players at those positions. I'm thinking people like Calvin Pace, Bryan Thomas, Bart Scott, and Eric Smith...Oh, but they get paid well too. Hmm...
