We cannot win with Schotty calling the plays for Sanchez. And not to let Sanchez off the hook, other QB's would not be having this much trouble with the talent surrounding him. Plaxico, Santonio, DK, LT - those are 4 elite options. The offensive line looks disgusting, Shonn Greene was the product of a GREAT offensive line - he is not a great runner. Many times Sanchez makes horrible throws but is bailed out by great catches (Mason first down grab is perfect example). I will state it here and now. We cannot win a super bowl by the arm of Sanchez. The kid has been blessed with a great defense and a great offensive line (this O-Line has been slacking).
His been blessed with a very good D and very good OL for 2 years and we got to the AFC finals both times only to have our D carved up like a Holiday bird. This year he hasn't been blessed with either a great D or a decent OL. Sanchez is getting better the D and the OL have to get better.
Then we are not going to win a Super Bowl, because that great defense cost them two straight Championship games. Not Sanchez. when the defense makes plays to get the offense the ball, and then your offense or special teams gives it right back, its kind of hard to play great defense. We survived 2 years doing that, going to the championship game. Won't continue to happen.
Last I checked, that great defense is the only reason they got to the championship game, but I guess its too much to ask your franchise QB to help win a game.
Well that is pretty much because the defence allow more when they are 14pts up and 6min left. I might be wrong but don't think you would see a very different Mark if you opened up the playbook or sacked Shottenheimer etc, people said the same thing about year 2 and 3 and 4 etc. That being said I don't have a big problem with Mark, i just do not think there is a miracle cure that will make him top-5.
How many times did Sanchez and the offense bail out that great defense in the regular season last year? 4? I am not saying he has not had a great D. It was the difference in his rookie year, and less so last year. If anything Sanchez has been the beneficiary of a great running game, and a committment to it. But to say they cannot win a Super Bowl "on his arm" doesn't seem to be based in what actually took place in AFCG two years ago, and the playoffs as a whole last year. He outplayed Tom Brady in NE in that game. Yes the defense was amazing, but he made 3 tremendous throws in that game that were elite throws. He was certainly not the problem in the AFCCG last year. The defense was. He has been at his best in the playoffs. He was 5tds, 1 INT and a 95% rating in 3 Road playoff games last year. Has Flacco, Ryan or any one else in his "class" done that? Would you say the Ravens have had a comparable defense to the Jets in the years Flacco has made the playoffs? I would say yes, and Sanchez has outplayed him. By a lot. Get a big stop yesterday after Sanchez manages, with a swiss cheese offensive line, to get you within a score with 5:30 left and 3 TO's yesterday. They didn't. Again. Tired of it.
I agree that Sanchez shows flashes of greatness, but he has too many set backs, and too many times he has put our defense in a hole. And don't let those numbers by Sanchez fool you. In that game the JETS defense held the Steelers to 10 points through the first and almost the entire 2nd quarter. If the defense is going to be on the field for almost an entire half, eventually they are going to break. And lets not forget, SANCHEZ is the one who fumbled at 1 minute mark in the 2nd quarter, that fumble went for a TD. That game ended 24-19. The DEFENSE held the Steelers to 0 second half points. SANCHEZ put us in that hole, not the defense.
That's a great point. The offense came up big yesterday to move down the field and close the score to 31-24. The defense shit the bed on that last Raider possession. If we stop them on their 20, I love our chances to take the game into OT.
I think those numbers are fooling you. 0 points in the second half? Big deal... they still didn't get a stop in the 2nd half when they needed it, and... The defense was a DISGRACE in that game. Come on. They were down 24-3 at the half!!! The Steelers took the ball off the opening kick and MARCHED down the field on the defense. REX RYAN SAID that the defense let them down in that game. And what happened when Sanchez got them all the way back in the game and they needed a stop to get the ball back to have a chance to win the game? The defense couldn't get off the field yet again! There's no WAY you can put the loss to the Steelers on Sanchez. None. The defense was a disgrace in the first half of that game. They missed more tackles than they had all year. It was embarrassed. And PS... the Sanchez sack and fumble for a td was with 2 minutes LEFT in the first half. Not into the 2nd quarter. It was already 17 nothing, and to have him passing there was a disgrace from good old Schottenheimer. Sanchez managed to shake off that huge shot and get them a field goal before the half ended to make it 24-3. The defense has been a good defense, but not a championship one, and it's a defense that NEVER seems to get a big stop when it needs it. Sanchez and the offense bailed out 4 times last year in the regular season... To say you cannot win with Sanchez is just not accurate. Sorry, I just don't feel it is.
I didn't say he has not made improvement in any area. Another thing about samples being too small is that Oakland is ranked 28th in points scored against, and Dallas would be about that high if you extrapoloate their points per game scored against through three rahter than two games. Jville ironically has not given up that many points in their other two games. (Carolina only scored 10 points yesterday.) This point relates to that which we can agree on, that the sample size right now is too small for this year. But the argument is there to be made that the average for the three opponents the Jets have played is not that great.
So the JETS defense gave up a total of 17 points. I believe that is good enough to win a game. So if Sanchez does not fumble for a TD we still have a good shot at 17-3 at half. I am not blaming Sanchez completely, BUT, think its more than fair to say we cannot win with his arm. He can't 'throw' us into a super bowl. The defense shut them out the entire second half. Yes you are right, Pitt did go down the field 9 minutes for a score in the first quarter. But last i checked, the offense punted 4 TIMES. Unacceptable. We all know Sanchez is not going anywhere. If Schotty cannot get it together, its time to move on without him.
Sanchez HAS improved. He really was not a good quarterback at all during the regular season last 2 seasons, especially his rookie year. We've put the team on his back this year, and he's been hit and miss. The yardage and completion percentages have been there, but our biggest plays in the passing game have usually come on screens that LT breaks for big games. And the offensive line has crumbled around him, making his job even more difficult. The dumb decisions have to stop, but I'm not upset the way he's playing. Sanchez is improving, you just wish that instead of taking baby steps forward, he would take a giant leap forward. On the other hand, Dallas defense is average, and missed 3 corners, and Oakland defense is average and missing 2 starters for most of the game, so he hasn't played elite competition yet. This Baltimore game is a big game for him.
He was drilled from his blind side and fumbled the ball. It's not like he was running around with it like a loaf of bread and had it stripped. He got leveled. And again. Where was the defense when the game was on the line? Where? They did NOT GET OFF THE FIELD. AGAIN. I can point to about 9 or 10 times since Ryan has taken over that this has happened. They gave up 0 points in the second half... the Steelers were up 24-3. I think they might have changed their game plan a bit and got a bit more conservative, no? And they punted four times? Wasn't the Steelers defense pretty good last year? Wasn't the Jets defense supposed to be better? I'm sorry, you have some valid points for sure, but you cannot blame that loss on Sanchez. You just can't. Blame Schottenheimer for the terrible play calling at the 1, but mostly, it was the defense not showing up in the first half and digging the team a 17-0 hole with 2 minutes to go in the first half. Giving up a NINE MINUTE DRIVE is unacceptable.
My biggest issue with the dumb decisions is he doesn't make enough big plays to make up for it. This was a Chad Pennington game. Even if you ignore the one mistake, everything was a checkdown, and most of the biggest plays we got were on short passes with YAC.
In watching other NFL games I've noticed that when other QBs make mistakes or make bad throws, the announcers give them a pass. Big Ben misses a receiver by 10 yards last night and the announcer says 'Incomplete pass' and moves along. If Sanchez makes the same throw they question his arm, his ability, his confidence, and his decision making abilities for the next 15 minutes. It forms public opinion- maybe not as much for Jets fans, but definitely for his detractors around the league. A lot of people still think of Braylon Edwards as having stone hands, because he had a rough season with the Browns.
