Oh, they certainly do play a role. But if you look at its importance compared to say... oh, I don't know... hand eye coordination or fastball velocity or bat speed across a team, "heart" is pretty far down the list of indicators of success. In baseball, the grittiest, most passionate college baseball team with a Ulyssesian amount of guts filling their bellies would lose to the most apathetic major league team far, far more often than not.
Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Sox have claimed Billy Wagner off waivers. This is going to be like watching Eric Gange and John smoltz rolled into one.
We can only pray. But Wags has been hitting 96 with his fb and is throwing his slider + curve for strikes.
Oh man I know! Look at who's on that staff. Smoltz is coming back in June, and you already got Dice-K, Beckett, Wakefield, Penny and Lester! Buchholz in AAA! When Smoltz gets back they should definitely try to deal Penny!
All of that stuff is supplementing Beckett and Lester. Coming into the year there was no reason to not expect Dice-k to be a solid number three, and Wake made the all star team. Buchholz has a career k/9 of 10 in the minor leagues and Smoltz was a hall of famer. Nobody fucking said that Smoltz/Penny/Bowden/ Buchholz would set the world on fire, they just said those are all great options to have for a number 5 starter. Coming into the season the staff was lined up as Beckett Lester Dice-K Wake Pick 1 out of Penny/Smoltz/ Buchholz/Bowden/Tazawa Daisuke being a dud is what blew everything up, but at any rate this rotation is still good. Nobody was claiming the Sox had 8 frontline starters, people just acknowledged the depth was very good and a plus for the team. They weren't wrong.
Damon fouled a ball of his knee/leg/foot in the first inning. He struck out and never came back out. They sent him for x-rays.
no, they didn't send him for xrays. They said its a bruised foot no reason for xrays. He's gonna be fine.
