This was probably the single worst baseball game I've ever seen. It was played so horribly by both teams. Garbage. I predict that Josh Beckett will set the record for home runs allowed in a game tomorrow as Francona leaves him in to get pounded and save the bullpen.
a big WTF is: Why was the dh today? Why not make it on SAT so they can rest until Sunday night for the next game.
Villone was almost as bad as Ponson was. i know he's pretty fatigued from pitching alot of games..but he was downright pathetic. Also A rod and Wilson had 2 bad errors that we were lucky enough to overcome. We had our share of lousy performances pitching wise and defensively. Timely hitting is what saved the Yanks
Pitching was terrible on both sides for the most part, and the Yankees played some pretty bad defense. Anytime you give up 11 runs you did not play a good game, win or not.
Villone gets a free pass because he was way overused. I dont get how we could get lucky to overcome those errors. Its called we shook it off an moved on.
Devil is actually kinda right. It was a poor performance defensively by both teams. Whether it was the pitching, or the fielding, there was sorely lacking defense for both teams. The offense on both sides was what made these games. It does help when you have two of the best teams in the league, who know each other very well. I have to say though, I wasn't aware the Sox lineup was as good as it is. I don't follow them except for the standings, but there is quite a bit of talent there. I had thought the Sox were hanging tough thanks to pitching this year. Guess I was wrong. They are in the same boat as us. It's going to be one helluva September this year for this rivalry. For the first time in a long time, one of us will probably be sitting home watching the playoffs. It's actually cool in a way. Brings back memories of days gone by where we would fight it out to the last game to see who had the right to play more than the 162 scheduled.
The next three games is where both managers are focusing on. These last two were almost apick em. Torre had the edge with Chieng. Yanks have the edge in pitching. BoSox have a chance to even things out here but bullpens say otherwise.
The fact that he has used Proctor so much before tonight is the reason people should be angry. Then again, it's hard to get angry at Torre these days, you kind of have to just accept the fact that he is like a retarded child when it comes to bullpen management. And it's hard to make fun of a retard.
There was some defensive slopiness, but it was a DH, so they get a break. As far as pitching goes, both starters were awful. The difference is, the guy who was awful for Boston is someone who they will rely on heavily down the stretch. The guy who was awful for the Yankees will probably never start a game for them again, and might be off the team before the weekend is over. Even if Boston won, they should've been more worried than the Yankees. The fact that they lost just makes it even worse.
I want Ponson gone. Don't we have anyone in the system that can take a bullpen spot, and dump him right now? I know our minors are depleted, but I can't deal with watching Ponson screw us down the stretch. As far as Proctor pitching last night, Torre actually has to get somewhat of a pass for that one. What choice did he have? Farnsworth got hit with a comebacker. That was unforeseeable. It's all the pitching he and Vallone have done to this point that is a problem. I know Dotel is just off the neverending DL, but we need him to be able to pitch more. I don't know what the answers are at this point. We need our starters to go 6 or better every start, and we just haven't been getting a lot of quality innings from the rotation. That leads to the pen getting overused. I think we have a nice stable of relief right now. If every one of them wasn't being used eveery single day, then I think we would be in much better shape.
I know people are going to shit on A-Rod for the DP, but that first called strike was total bullshit. That count should have been 3-0. It forced him to swing at a pitch he would have taken had the count been 3-0. I understand when umps try to help out pitchers to get them back on track early, but that was just a total load of shit. That pitch was clearly outside.
