I am being realistic. They weren't "marginal" prospects. They were actually 3 prospects with some very good potential. Yes, the Yankees pockets made the deal complete, but that doesn't diminish the work Cashman put in to bring Abreu and Lidle to the Bronx.

It's not like the Yankees were the only ones gunning for Abreu. Plus, as they were talking about earlier, Cashman was demanding Lidle be included in the deal or it was off. The Red Sox had a deal put together to get Lidle.

You can hate the deal all you want, it doesn't make it any less significant.

I don't "hate the deal". The Phillies GM is an idiot, and his fate was sealed the moment he decided that shipping Abreu and his salary out of town was more important then getting back good value for him.

You're correct that it was an excellent trade for the Yankees, I just credit that more to Gillicks senility then any magic on the part of Cashman. Cashman was able to make his demands because Gillick essentially broadcasted "Hey, I'm desperate to trade Abreu, and I know the Yankees are the only ones that want him. But I've absolutely got to trade hiim, so what do you think is a fair deal?!?!"

I agree with part of what you said. Yes, the GM is an idiot. He made it known that he wanted to part with Abreu. However, he was willing to listen to offers, and the Yankees weren't the only ones asking. Considering they wound up swallowing cash to dump him off, anyone with some decent prospects could have had him. Cashman worked out the best deal.

I do understand where you are coming from though. He did make it quite easier on the Yankees by expressing that he just had to get rid of Abreu. The only thing I disagree with is that the Yankees were the only team that was an option.

Not a very long leash for Dotel.

Nice to see him back on the mound, I've always liked him.

Proctor up in the bullpen. Someone really just needs to beat the ever loving shit out of Torre. How can he be this brain dead? He MUST be dead. I refuse to believe any living, breathing human can be this stupid.

Why not have Dotel walk Ortiz, and let him continue from there? This is just sick. I don't know how Proctor can even move his arm at this point.

I'm all for making pitchers work harder these days, since most are pansies who can't pitch two days in a row, but for crying out loud, Proctor is pitching multiple innings every day. He just pitched less than 15 hours ago!!!

There must be some sort of prize for being the worst manager of this series, and Torre is doing everything in his power to take that honor away from Francona. That HAS to be the reason. Nothing else even REMOTELY makes sense.

certainly does seem like he's over managing this inning. 3 pitchers in the 7th inning of a regular season game?

You know, if I worked for the Yankees, I would have the theme from "Police Academy" play every time Proctor comes out of the Bullpen.

I think Joe has just totally lost touch at this point. Even worse, what the hell is Guidry thinking? I would expect more from him. You would never see Mel allow this happen every single day.

He let it happen to Quantrill. Besides, Mel was the only guy that was actually WORSE than Torre.

Hang on there. What do Karsay, Quantrill, Sturtze and Gordon mean to you?

You know, as good as it is to see the Yanks beat up the Sox, this 5 games in four days thing is boooollshit, if you ask me. Neither of these teams have the arms to play this much. Just some bad baseball for the most part.

Ok, my $ .02 is up. Carry on.

You keep bringing up that this is a regular season series. I don't know how it is for the Mets when they play, say, Atlanta, but every time the Yankees and Red Sox play, it is treated like a playoff game. That's a result of the history between these two clubs. Even games in April between them are played like this. Even if they don't matter in the standings, they get played this way. It probably has a bit to do with the hatred between the teams, but also that so many years have come down to the last game, or even a one game playoff. Each of them tries to pull that noose as tight as possible as quickly and as often as possible.

Also, while it seems unlikely now, Boston is by no means out of the hunt. They could still come back to win the division in reality. Keep in mind, this is the same team that won 8 straight games to come back from down 3-0 to win the World Series just a couple years ago.

This isn't the same team. Every area of that team was better than the 2006 team. Boston is dead. In the division race and wild card race.

You know, actually, I forgot about Quantril. My bad, that is absolutely correct. He was abused to no end as well.

I'm not saying I don't totally agree with that statement. All I am saying is the reason why I feel Torre is playing this like it's September 25th, and the Yanks are up by a half game.

Very good pitching performance by Wells. I really wish we would have brought him back. He is the lefty that Johnson should have been.
