I'm not really changing my story. I accept the stats you posted as showing I may have been wrong that he is above average. That is the point you were trying to make, correct? Plain and simple, there aren't many first basemen I would rather have playing for the Yankees than Giambi. He plays first well enough for me. He drives in more than enough runs to make it worthwhile to have him in.
Proctor is still in? So we lose him and Villone for tomorrow? Nice work Joe. Lose the the two best guys to carry you through the middle in a losing effort.
In the sense that we were talking about defense and have now changed to offense... the story has changed. That's what I meant by that.
I hear you. I just didn't want to appear like I was Champing. Like I said, I accept your stats as telling me I was wrong that he is above average defensively. I still stand by the opinion that he is adequate though. The only reason I brought up offense was to illustrate my point that I will take whatever defensive effort he offers if he continues to hit significantly better when playing first than when just DHing, which he does.
Hush you mouf... These are the Yankees. While it may seem unlikely, there is still a chance. I didn't stay up this late on a Sunday night for nothing.
Just to play devils advocate here a little... if being worst in MLB in every major defensive stat qualifies you as adequate... what is inadequate?
Well, the game is still pretty close with enough time for the Yanks to close the gap. How would you feel if he put in the 2nd tier relievers and gave up the game, then tomorrow's game ends up being a blowout where Proctor/Villone's services aren't even needed? Play for a win now and worry about tomorrow when the time comes.
We still have like 15 straight days of baseball to play ahead of us. I know you try to win today and let tomorrow happen, but right now, there are a LOT of tomorrows.
