I don't agree. Piazza should never have been a 1B, he should have moved to the AL, and became a DH, but that's just my opinion. As for Giambi, here are his numbers: Total as 1B Games: 1027 Starts: 1009 Innings: 8532.2 Total Chances: 9190 Put outs: 8688 Assists: 429 Errors: 73 Double Plays: 806 Fielding %: .992 Those are very good numbers, especially for a guy most people don't think is a good first baseman.
Ugh, rain delay. I hope this ends pretty quickly, otherwise we're looking at a long double header tomorrow.
My point about Piazza is just because your coach was a good player doesn't mean you will be. As for Giambi's numbers.. which one of those stats sums up his arm and mobility? Defensive stats don't indicate much (as many fans point out when arguing H.Matsui's value in the field). It senseless to argue Giambi;s defense with me... I've done it time and time again on this board and he's done nothing to change my mind. I think he's brutal from his footwork to his arm to his instincts...
It's weird the rain started coming down hard here the same minute it started coming down bad there...
As far as I'm concerned the best thing that could happen to the Yankees is a 2 hour delay. It would get Schilling rusty and I have a suspicion that Mussina would settle down as a result (his problems are usually more mental than physical.) Of course the worst thing that could happen would be if the game got cancelled and a 5th game got tacked onto the 4 game set in the Bronx next month. Because it would give Boston a huge chance to regain footing in the division. We have to slam the door now.
Well, Mattingly is very well respected for both his hitting, and fielding coaching ability. That was the point I was trying to make. I don't see why a 1B has to have a great arm, or even great mobility. 1B is the least athletic of all positions in the sport. I can understand you don't think he is that good, but you said he is among the worst fielders in the league. The stats tell a different story. IMO, errors are the most telling stat for a fielder. Giambi has only 73 errors at first for his career. So the fact is, when he gets his glove on the ball, he almost always makes the play. He has only not made the play 502 times in almost 9200 chances. I have no idea how many were possible to make, so it's not a great stat, but he still made almost 8700 plays. Not bad. Now don't get me wrong. I am not saying he is a great, or even a very good, first baseman. All I'm saying is 1) he is not nearly as bad as he is often credited as being, and 2) he is slightly better than an average 1B. That, plus his hitting production makes him worthwhile to me.
About 10 more minutes. F Entourage. Isn't that crap On Demand anyway? This is like playoff-caliber baseball, a month and a half early!
They are bringing the tarp off now anyway. However, the extra game almost surely would have been played tomorrow. It would have been hell on both teams, so I am sure they were going to try to get this game in. I just hope this game doesn't go too late now. It's another day game tomorrow there, and we can't afford to go through the pen again. We still have a lot of days in a row to play.
Yeah, it looks like they rushed the game back to protect Schilling. Home field advantage is one thing, but Moose is pitching in the rain. This is bullshit.
Both Moose and Schilling are still pitching strong. Doesn't look like they accumulated much rust during the rain delay. That's a relief after the horrid display of pitching in the recent games. ...Oh and sorry to interrupt your conversation. Please go on.
I can only really comment when something really stunning or important happens. My TV and computer are on oppisite sides of my house.
