Matsui, Gardner and Cervelli came off the bench in the Series. We'll see...if the Yankees can get a large lead in the AL by the deadline they may proceed as is, but I doubt it.
You realize that Matsui came off the bench because he was the DH, right? This year, the Yanks would have Nick Johnson in that role. Not Randy Winn, or any of this year's other bench players you hate. Cervelli is still on the team, in the same role. So you're talking apparently about the difference between Thames/Winn coming off the bench and Gardner coming off the bench. Your quibble is getting smaller by the minute, dude. I never contended that they would stand pat. That's a completely different topic. They're always going to look to get better, if possible. That goes for every team, I'd imagine. You said you hated the bench, that you'd rather have Hairston, and that your reason for wanting him was apparently that the Yanks will need pinch hitters in the nine games that they'll play in NL parks this year. My point has been that this is a very, very, very minor thing about which to be upset.
GQSanchez..... Cappy has done a great job and has countered all your points pretty well so I'll go with a "what he said" mentality. But I must reiterate 1 thing.... 1. Slade Heathcott over Gardner. You have to be pulling a Frencesca with this point because it it so severly flawed and not even thought out. A guy who barely has scratched the surface of the MINORS is better than Gardner? This isn't football or basketball, it takes years and years of development for these player to become steady 150 plus games a year player. Sure he looked good in one game maybe against much lower competition. No way is he in the same echelon as Gardner when it comes to speed, and I'm sure fielding at this point in Heathcott's career (right now) as well. My dad who is a super delusional yanks fan wouldn't even come up with something like this. Oh and the Igawa/Dice-k thing and (more notably) comparing our WS bench to our opening day bench is just absolutely crazy and there is no way you can see that as evidence to support your case. Question: Is it going to be Burnette and Posada? I would prefer Cervelli because I like giving him playing time, but I also don't wanna rule out the possibility of Posada and Burnette jelling a little more with playing time together.
Agree with Cappy on pretty much everything (as usual). But the one point about the bench I would like to make is: this is the Yankees. We make moves once the season starts. If our bench is a problem, it's the easiest fix there is to make at the trade deadline.
My original point I was ( I guess I ineffectively alluded to)...is that there will certainly be positional acquisitions at the deadline. I said a page or two back, I wouldn't be surprised to see Carl Crawford in pinstripes. I'd be more comfortable with Gardner coming off the bench and thus bolstering a currently weak bench.
1. There's no way they're getting Crawford via trade. Why would they give up talent (intra-divisionally no less) to get him when he's going to be a free agent after this offsesaon? Unless it is shown that LF is a glaring hole for the Yanks, there's zero chance they make that move. Zero. Especially not for the purpose of upgrading the bench via way of putting Gardner there. If you're a betting man, I'll lay you 100:1 odds that trade doesn't happen. 2. You keep saying the bench is weak, but by what standards? It's one of the best benches they've had in a long time. There are two players on it who are actually league average players for their careers (Winn and Thames), as well as two young guys who are very good defensively (Cervelli and Pena). That's a pretty damn solid bench, I'd say.
I have to watch the gayass NESN feed tonight. Nevertheless go YANKS. Burnett was awful @ Fenway last year, let's hope things are different this season.
1) I never said he was better than Gardner, I said above...he "looked like..." 2) That game I saw Heathcott in was against the full squad Yankees w/ Vasquez pitching. 3) The kid is fast (maybe not as fast as Gardner...although I'm sure Cappy could dig up some 90ft times) but he definitely has a better arm... 4) Igawa/Daisuke was sarcasm and I went with it to piss off devil...nevertheless Daisuke sucks and was has not lived up to how he was portrayed 5) Why would comparing a WS Championship bench to an opening day bench be crazy? Wouldn't the bench of WS Championship team, one we are intimately familiar with, give you an inkling of an idea where your bench needs to be? 6) It's Burnett/Posada...Cervelli will certainly play, probably will catch Vasquez or Hughes or Burnett next time around if Posada and Burnett screw up communication a lot tonight.
You should be thankful you get to hear the pure awesomeness that is Remy/Orscillo instead of the audio diarrhea that is YES.
good inning for Lester...Yanks are going to have to attack the fastball tonight if he keeps the curveball on the plate
You won't believe it, but even if they were the Yankees crew I would think the Sox guys are the best broadcast team I've heard in sports. They are incredibly entertaining. Ellsbury with a bloop hit between 3 Yankees to start it off.
