Whichever team loses this one is gonna feel like shit tomorrow. Both teams have had about a million chances to put the game away.

I'll tell you who's loving this: Minnesota. Sox have to fly to Minny tonight and play tomorrow night. Yankees are off.

    You're kidding, right?

A competitive disadvantage because they weren't allowed to play Ortiz, and their pitcher had to hit instead?

Sorry, that's ridiculous. It's not like the Pirates got to have a DH. The difference between the Sox pitchers' hitting ability and the Pirate pitchers' hitting ability is negligible. The difference between the DH slot (even if it is on the bench) and the extra guy on the NL bench is huge.

And, let's just put aside for the moment the fact that it's tremendously douchey to make those kinds of excuses when your team loses a game... how about the competitive disadvantage the Pirates have against the Sox because of the $100+ million difference in payroll?

If Tex is gonna win a gold glove and hit 40 home runs, I can live with a few swings over the top of changeups.

I think the Yankees were at a competitive disadvantage because they didn't get a chance to bat again.

    Well that sucked.

It's a tough spot for Hughes coming out of the pen on almost no notice, but you've gotta make pitches in big moments.

I guess we can take solace in the fact that we put ourselves in position to beat Lester and Beckett on the road, and we leave Fenway in the exact same spot that we entered it in. There's lots of baseball left to play.

Yeah, I didn't particularly like this idea of having Hughes available in the pen after his great start last week, if only because - if the plan is for him to be a starter, long-term - then I want him to be able to build off that start last week. I don't want any confidence issues or, worse, physical setbacks cropping up because you decided to toss him into a game on his throw day.

Gay loss. But I'm pleased with how the Yanks pitched this series.... I am not worried about Sabathia.
