Not so rare against the Red Sox. An OK game. Boring as hell and frustrating for 8 innings, but a good ending. Tomorrow should be a better one.
How much more pathetic is Chamberlain going to become as a starter? Yeah, he gave up 1 ER but 9 hits, 4 BBs and a HBP in 5 1/3? That's almost 3 an inning..how lucky did he get last night? He should have given up 7 or 8 with those stats. Well, Hughes is headed back up and I don't think there are any more options on him so we will see what happens when and if Wang comes off the DL.
A tough loss but I'll take that same situation every day. It's not often Mariano will blow a 1 run save let alone a 2 run save.
He got outs. That's what matters. Had the rest of the team taken care of their end of the bargain, he'd have gotten the win. The more he starts, the better he'll get. ---------------- I don't hold anything against Mo. He should never have pitched 4 outs. Girardi's School of Micromanagement is in full mid-season form already. Why was Swisher pulled so that Gardner could play center? Why was Albaladejo pulled with an 0-1 count? So now we have multiple guys on the DL, and one more possible by the end of today. ARod still out until at least May 7. Nady out indefinitely. Ransom 15 days. (Not that I'm crying about it.) Wang 15 days (at least.) Bruney back in NY to take tests on his right elbow. And how about being four for nineteen with RISP. WTF?! I always used to say "Every year is 'next year' for the Yankees" but I think that needs to change to "Every year is 'last year.'" At least I get to watch Hughes again now.
My God the whining never ends. We have the best closer in baseball, he has closed 4+ oput saves a million times. This board would have been flooded w/ "why didn't he bring Mo into the game in the 8th" had the setup men wound up blowing it in the 8th. mariano didn't get the job done, it's rare but it happens. It's one game and give me that same situation any day.
Don's going to bitch about every start, no matter what Joba does. Chamberlain didn't have great command last night (and the ump seemed pretty inconsistent to me, which can make it tough... still not an excuse, though), but he did a pretty good job despite that, getting grounders when he needed them. That cutter is working pretty well for him. Not a great outing by any means... he needs to stop walking guys... but certainly not "pathetic." But yeah, Don, let's write the 23-year-old off as a starter three starts into the season because his ERA+ is "only" 122 and he "only" held the Boston offense to two runs. Yanking Swisher was a defensive move, and a good one in my book. With a two-run lead, I think you'd rather have the defensive range upgrade than expect Swisher's bat to come into play again. I don't know about Albaladejo... Girardi said it was because he was waiting for Mo to be ready. But I would have just let him finish the inning, if he could. My genius fantasy baseball drafting strategy pays off!
I wouldn't put that loss on Mo. I'd put the loss on the team for not scoring more in 2 separate situations with 0 outs and the bases loaded. I also want to praise the hitters because Lester looked dazzling for 4 innings and then he lost it. Props to them for riding out that storm.
I'm glad you understand how options work before spewing out nonsense. Well done as always Don The option was used when they optioned him from MLB camp to MiLB camp, it doesn't matter if they call him up now and send him back down
Yeah, there were at least a dozen occurrences (for both pitchers) where the second pitch, hitting damn near the exact same spot, got a different call than the previous.
I think you said you were a pitcher, as I am, so you know this, but there is NOTHING worse than trying to pitch with an inconsistent umpire. If he's giving you a small zone that's one thing. It still sucks but you can adjust. But when the zone moves and/or changes with every pitch it becomes almost impossible to get anything done.
Yup. An inconsistent ump led to the only ejection of my baseball career. I had never argued balls and strikes with an ump before, but this guy was ridiculous, and after six or seven blown calls, the Stare In At the Ump In Disbelief look wasn't really satisfying anymore... so as I was walking off the field after an inning, I yelled into him, "You know, I have a hard enough time finding the strike zone on my own. You don't need to move it every other pitch." And that was the end of my day.
