The Yankees certainly made the right decision in not trading Chamberlain for rental Gagne..especially when you look at what both did tonight. Gagne has pitched in four games, giving up six runs and nine hits in 3 1/3 innings. :shit: Chamberlain struck out four in two perfect innings, giving him six Ks in four scoreless innings.:breakdance:
Technically a game back since we trail in the L column but either way we are right there and now just 5 behind Boston. Hughes and joba were grat especiallt Joba- the future looks really bright for theYankee staff- now if we can get some young position players we'll be in great shape for a long time.
Igawa has been claimed off waivers by SD which would now allow a roster spot for Kennedy too if they want him to pitch for Clemens during his suspension.
Karstens has a blister, doesn't he? I think it will be Kennedy. I am also wondering if the Yankees wouldn't think about taking Wells to pitch as a leftie out of the BP. He probably would still be better then Villone. At least he should be able to still throw strikes.
If the Tigers keep sucking and the Yankees keep winning my AL playoff picks will be correct (Angels, Indians, Red Sox, Yankees), so I got that going for me which is nice.
somethings not right for the Pads to ditch Wells and claim Igawa off waivers...i wonder what kind of reefer is growing in hills of SD
I thought a similar thing when the ChiSox acquired Jose Contreras on 7/31/04. Of course, that worked out well for them when he won 15 games in the 2005 regular season and went 3-1 in the postseason with a WHIP under 1.00. I don't expect the skinny toad to have the same success, but you never know.
Quick question. With Clemens serving his 5 game suspension, when will his next start be? I'm only asking because I have tickets to the game for this Wednesday (Aug 15th). Wouldn't this be the day his suspension is over? If it is, that would be great.
Great outing by Moose so far. Great to see him hitting 89-90 consistently... as opposed to 86-88. That may bode well for the rest of his starts. But he's been pretty darn good lately, regardless. Going back to June 2nd, he's only had one "bad" start (and, not to make excuses, but it was the "typical" bad start for Moose, pitching on an extra day of rest). The rest of his starts have been serviceable to good. At the very least, I hope these two games against the Indians show that The Tough Schedule (TM) isn't some kind of guarantee that the Yanks will perform poorly. The performance of the early season Yanks was the fluke... not their recent play. The adjusted standings support this, as well.
I was never convinced it was so tough to begin with. Of those 20 games, 3 were with Cleveland and 8 with Detroit, neither of which have been playing very good lately. So that will leave really only Boston and LA as tough games. Whether we do well against Detroit is another story yet to be seen.
They said last night that Clemens will not be pushed back but will completely miss a start. That means he will follow Pettitte's next start after today whenever that is.
Another series won, in Cleveland! Today Pettitte goes and both starts Friday and Saturday have been very good...Westbrook has picked it up lately, his sinker has been doing well.
Cappy, I gotta agree with you about Moose. I've often complained about him, but he seems to be pitching better with each start. Is that a byproduct of good offensive efforts by the lineup giving him ridiculous leads? I don't know. Personally, I don't care either. He's pitching well, and his breaking stuff is nasty again. Great to see. Here's the thing discussed last night that I think is the most amusing thing of all. Earlier in the season, while we were in the midst of our worst losing streak, I brought up the topic of the Yankees being discussed before the season for probably scoring 1000 runs this year. Well, obviously, that's not going to happen, but I was laughed off by some people on the board as that being a totally impossible feat. Since the All-Star break ended, and the Yankees have been healthy, they've averaged 7 runs a game. 7 x 162 = 1134. Just something interesting. Imagine if the injury bug never plagued this team. I'm still holding my breath and saying prayers nightly that this level of play continues, but we're actually beating a good team right now. Toronto wasn't exactly poor either. We need to keep this up. BTW: junc will like this. I actually want to say "good job" to Torre. He has handled this team VERY WELL lately. I haven't seen any moves I could honestly object to in weeks. As I've said, when he's wrong, I'll call him out, but when he does well, I'll give him his due. He deserves it right now. Also BTW: How about Giambi? Pinch hit BLAST. I still don't approve of the steroid crap, but he does improve the team by being on the bench.
the lineup is certainly capable of 1000 runs. not sure why anyone would laugh at that. but when only Jeter and Posada are hitting consistently... Posada and A-Rod having monster years in the walk years of their contracts is no coincidence.
Didn't Bill James run some numbers on that a while back, showing that the "Walk Year" motivation is a myth?
