So what is the timeline for any of Cashman's moves translating to a World Series? 2008?

We'll see. This is his second off-season with control of the team, so 2008 is when the results need to be there.

With full control of the team. I know you like to say he's the best in the biz but with the results we've seen on the field it's easy to be sketical of that claim. I wonder if he'll make it to 2008...

What's to wonder about? He's going to be the GM in 2008, whether he wins a championship this year or not. The way he has made the Yankees system into one of the best in the league, and has been the first person in over 30 years to have Steinbrenner's blessing to do whatever he wants with no interference, he's not going anywhere.

Well how many season do you get in the Bronx with a 190-210 million dollar team that can't get out of the first round of the playoffs? Me thinks not too many. If they don't make the playoffs this year, he's gone.

The Yankees could miss the playoffs next year, and there's not a chance in hell he'd be fired. 2008 is the year that he will be on the hot seat. It will have been his third full off-season in charge, and it will be a team comprised of virtually all his players.

    Cairo hitting with RISP:

G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS

    54 58 28 19 5 1 0 30 1 9 3 1 .328 .323 .448 .771

He comes through when it counts - unlike another infielder we know

Glad to have him back on the bench, he's a strong role player

If RISP is the benchmark for coming through when it counts, then A-Rod is very successful in that area.

    .302 / .431 / .508

Bottom line, one year of RISP is far too small a sample size. Cairo does not come through when it counts moreso than he regularly does. No one does. Last year, he happened to be awful overall (.600 OPS, 59 OPS+), and average at best with RISP (.771).

Looking over the numbers... wouldn't you say RISP w/2 outs is even more clutch than regular RISP? What about close and late?

    A-Rod RISP w/2 outs in 2006: .313 / .495 / .475 (.970)
    A-Rod close and late 2006: .237 / .326 / .368 (.694)

    Cairo RISP w/2 outs in 2006: .278 / .278 / .389 (.667)
    Cairo close and late in 2006: .129 / .200 / .129 (.329)

Looks to me like Cairo is just an awful hitter regardless of the situation.

The idea that the GM of the New York Yankees has the luxury of a bye for the 2007 season is ridiculous. As George and Jeter remind us every chance they get, anything less then the World Series is a failure for this team. Cashman needs to deliver something besides nice write ups in the scouting magazines.

The thing you are ignoring in your argument is that regardless of the job Cashman has done, no matter how you feel about it (which IMO, has been absolutely amazing,) is that no matter what the results this year, there is a clear scapegoat on the chopping block before Cashman.

Joe Torre will not be the Yankees' manager in 2008 unless they win the World Series this October. Even then, Joe's job is not what I would term "safe."

Cashman will be the GM at least until October 2008.

I get what you are saying but if we did miss the playoffs George would not sit still, he'd clean house including Cashman. Getting upset in a 5 game series is 1 thing but missing the playoffs completely is another.

So you guys think there is no scenario where Cashman can get fired?

Ridiculous as you may think it is, Cashman is going no where after 2007, regardless of the team's record.

If we miss the playoffs in 2007 and 2008, then Cashman would be gone.

So the team wins 80 games this year... Cashman comes back for 2008?

You're the same guy that suggested he should be fired immediatly if he didn't throw Proctor in a proposed RJ for prospect deal, right?

I think any GM who wouldn't trade an above average middle reliever for one of the best up and coming young players in all of baseball, shouldn't have a job. But as we found out later, there was never a chance that Jackson was going to be on the table.

Of course, I was also being quite sarcastic and over-dramatizing the situation. I also said this off-season would be a failure if Torre and A-Rod were both back in 2007. Obviously, that's the furthest thing from the truth.

The jury is still out on that.
