Gio Bernard or Terrence Williams. We need a RB, Gio Bernard could be one of the better backs in the league in five years. I realize some might call it a reach, but I don't see it as a reach if Bernard is one of the better backs in the league in five years. WR certainly isn't a need for the upcoming season, but Holmes could be entering his final season in NY. The Jets need someone opposite of Hill, and Kerley is not an outside WR, he is a slot receiver. The way I see it is this. Our defense is legit. Currently they are 8th in total yards allowed, without the best defensive player in the NFL. I am not worried about the defense at all. The offense is another story. You know what happens when you bring in the best "value"? You get guys like Kyle Wilson that end up being your slot CB. Sure, if a franchise changing talent is available, you don't pass on that guy, but I don't see how a team in win now mode can just ignore the most glaring needs if they plan to contend as a playoff team in the coming years. The Jets are not a horrible team. Honestly, this team is a playmaker or two on the offensive end from being a super bowl contender. And I am dead serious. That might sound crazy, but we are going to end the season at 9-7 or 8-8 playing without our best player on the team, our best offensive playmaker, and playing with a bottom 5 starter at QB. The Jets should be in win now mode and bring in some players that can help them score points. The offense is a huge issue, the defense is one of the best in the NFL.
Bernard in the middle of the 1st is a reach. Bernard at the end of the 1st is a gamble. Bernard anywhere outside the first few picks of the 2nd round is money in the bank.
The way to build a sustained strong offense is to build thru the trenches, the quality of O-lineman drops big time after Rd 1. Having playmakers mean zilch if the QB and RB can't make plays. We will have play of opportunities to get a solid RB later, like a Eddie Lacy.
Would absolutely love Lacy. Pair him with Powell (assuming Greene is gone after the year) and you got yourself a nice 1-2 punch.
Statistics are deceiving. Howard has played very well, and sacks allowed are part of Sanchez moving out of the blocking scheme. Every play has a predetermined drop, and a blocking scheme to match that. Too many times I have seen Sanchez make his drop, and then drop past the coverage if his first read isn't there. Almost everytime Howard has given up a sack it is due to this. Howard has played above any expectations, and has earned his spot on this line. Especially for a first year starter.
Im one of the biggest Gio Bernard supporters here, but at 16 he is a bit of a reach. I would be completely happy if we traded down in to the mid 20s and selected him... And as for this team, the Jets a bad team. I dont care what their record will be, they are just not good. I can hardly watch them because of how bad this offense is. We have a bottom 3 QB in the league right now, and unless that changes, we wont be a real contender. The defense is top 10, but they were never clutch in big moments. We don't have 2 starting caliber OLB's and who knows if Landry will be back. On offense, the only few people that we can count on is Brick, Mangold and Kerley (who CAN play on the outside and has proved it). The rest's future with this team is either in question of they are just not good. A team that needs a QB, RB, WR, #2TE, RG, LG/RT, 2 OLB and a S is not one or two players away... Please don't fool yourself. There is no way we are in win now mode... None at all. Im not sure how you conclude that. Especially if Woody does the right thing and fire Tanny.
Terrance Williams is my favorite wideout in this class, always seems to have at least one amazing grab a game
I think we got a pretty solid offensive line. We got studs at LT and C. Howard has been incredibly solid at RT, especially in the running game. Moore is getting old, and I get the point of eventually replacing him, but he has been extremely good this season. Slauson has been solid this season. I just don't see a major weakness in the offensive line. Sure, we could use maybe a new guard or possibly even RT, but they aren't pressing needs. I would rather see us take a playmaker on offense. Plus, please don't try to feed me Eddie Lacy. That dude is extremely overrated. He has one of the best offensive lines in recent CFB memory blocking for him. I don't think he has had any great individual runs, its usually just great blocking that gets him his yards. Plus, do we really need another RB without any speed or big play ability? I think Greene covers that role.
You know better then me man, and i know you know your shit i wasn't debating that just simply thought we should get a play maker on offense in the 1st round but wouldn't mind an edge rusher with that pick either. Then go O-line in round 2.
I guess you are drinking the media cool aid. My point on Bernard is that if you are willing to take him in the 20's, why does it matter if its a few picks earlier? If you are getting the guy you want, its not such a huge reach. Who cares? Its not like teams haven't reached before. I don't want to turn this into a Jets team analysis thread, but I just disagree about the overall state of the team. No doubt, Sanchez is awful. He is easily one of the worst starting QB's in the league and has been since he has been a Jet, but the Jets have made two AFC Championship games, went 8-8 another season, and have another chance to make the playoffs, despite having possibly the worst starting QB in the league. Maybe this is just me, but I think that speaks to how good the rest of the team is. Just look at the contenders in the NFL in the last three or so years, how many of them have QB as bad as Sanchez? As far as team needs, I disagree as well. QB is an obvious need, but lets just cross that one off. Sanchez is going to be the starter, he is making too much money to be cut. I agree about needing a RB. I don't agree about a WR. I won't say its a need, but the Jets COULD use a WR, thats if they are planning on getting rid of Holmes after next season. I don't think WR is a pressing need though. Holmes, Hill and Kerley are a solid receiving core. Maybe not elite, but when healthy, thats not a bad 1-3. Plus, Schillens has not been horrible this year, and who the hell knows about Braylon Edwards? Heck, even Clyde Gates has been decent when he has played. I am not saying we got a great receiving core, but we had an unusual number of injuries to WR's this year, I doubt half of our WR's get banged up for most of the season next year. A blocking TE should not even be considered a need. Really? How hard is it to sign a guy like Leonard Pope in free agency? Does that really cost 10 Million dollars? I get what you are saying about the offensive line, but again, those aren't pressing needs. There is no Wayne Hunter on the line this year. Everyone could hold up at least another year. You might want to find a younger guard to replace Moore, but we don't need to invest a first round pick for a guard right now. I agree about the defensive needs, but we have had no production from our OLB's all year, and the only production in the line backing core has come from Harris, yet we have the #8 defense in the league with the best defensive player in the league being injured. With Revis, this defense is easily top 5. The point is, the defense is fine. Maybe you try to bring in some temporary pieces or a 2nd or 3rd rounder, but the defense isn't in dire need of a Jarvis Jones or Manti Te'o type. Maybe someone like Chase Thomas in the second round, but there aren't any pressing needs at OLB. Worst case scenario is Calvin Pace comes back for another year. The defense has been fine despite his poor play this year. The offense is awful though. Our two main RB's don't have a run longer than 37 yards all season. The point is, this team doesn't have an explosive back that is not only a threat to break a long run but someone that can catch a pass out of the back field. I love the ground and pound method, but you are at a disadvantage when you don't have a guy who can just get you easy offense and break a big run. If the Jets were in rebuilding mode, Ryan and Tanny would be gone someway or another at the end of the season along with Sanchez, and a QB would be drafted in the first few rounds. This team does not appear to be in any type of rebuilding mode, as long as Rex and Tanny are still employed.
Agreed, unless you have one of those true elite RB's like Barry Sanders who created his own running lanes, you need good bodies on the line to open up slight holes for them to go through, or to block on the edge. One could argue that with an upgrade to the guard position on the left side, or an upgraded O-Line to the left side the current running backs would be much better than they currently are. I wouldn't object to taking a Tackle/Guard in the first round and a Guard/Tackle in the second round to be honest.
Everyone here knows what Steve Hutchinson has done in his stellar career for Seahawks and the Vikings. If Warmack is rated the best guard coming out of the draft in the pass 10 years there is no question about it we have to take Chance with our 1st pick.
Personally, I think this team should enter rebuild mode, and completely change up who's running this mess. You say Im drinking the media cool-aid, sure... Its a good thing I dont watch NFL network, ESPN, ect or read any Jets material. I can comprehend what I watch, and most of it isnt good. I could easily say you drinking the green cool-aid. This forum probably isnt the best place for it, but oh well... Our wins consist of the Bills, Dolphins (who we got completely outplayed by all game), Colts, Rams, Cardinals (which we had to pull our starting QB in order to put up a single point), and Jacksonville (who our QB could only throw for 111 yards on one of the worst defenses in the league). Our losses consist of the Steelers, 49ers (who trampled us), Texans (who we played decently well, once again let down by QB play), Patriots (could have one, but didn't), Dolphins (beat badly), Seahawks (offense put up 0 points), and the Patriots... Assfumble. Basically, yeah, we can beat bad teams, but we can not beat a single good team. Thats not the making of a team close to being a playoff contender. We also have one of the easiest schedules known to man, so if we end 8-8, that will be a large contributor. Our skill position group is one of the worst in the league, even with Holmes (who's not even that good). Hill is a complete question mark at this point and I am not counting on him to be anything more than a good #4 at this point. Holmes isnt a #1 and Kerley is the only player to be excited about. As for #2 TE, I added it because Keller could be gone, and isnt even that good. Adding a good #2 TE could be smart if we wanted to expand our offense also. Our OL is average... Moore is done after this year, Slauson would have a hard time starting on most teams and Austin has been decent although improving. To say the least, on a ground and pound team, it could improve.
For those suggesting a play maker on offense, it's not going to happen if we keep Rex. Why? He wants to be a power running offense and play great defense. He believes highly in a backs ability to wear defenses down, so he will want a power runner. To be a power running team like in 09 we need a dominant oline, not a good one. We are also going to be in need of two or three linebackers next year. Talent at RB can be had in the second, third, or fourth round. Rex also highly believes in Holmes who he often says cost him a ring while plaguing for Pittsburgh. We may add a wideout, but not a first rounder. There will be ample talent for either OLB or OL when we pick. If the staff making the picks is similar to this years we will go in one of those areas.
You can, but that's not what Rex wants. If he wanted speed and flash he would play McKnight more. What Rex wants is between the tackles runners. Powell is no Greene when it comes to power, but he is not a speed or elusiveness runner. The jist of it is Rex is looking to get the tems identity back. It's going to be similar to what the steelers bring. Three backs that run downhill first and foremost. I think he realizes he screwed up the offense by trying to all things and is going back to doing one great and the other to be a complimentary part. The one thing Rex wants the O to do great is run the ball.
I think this is an excellent mock, WW85. I've been a big Tyler Wilson fan for a while. I wouldnt be surprised if he makes it #1. Would be very happy with Jake Matthews. I think Werner gets drafted before J. Jones.
bill walsh said it doesn't matter where you draft someone as long as they help your football team who cares if we draft gio half a round early? if he helps our team, its a good pick
I think we both agree where this team is at right now, I think I just am looking at it glass half full while you are looking at it glass half empty. The Jets are an average NFL team right now. They are 6-7, will probably end the season 8-8 or 9-7, that is a pretty average football team this year. I feel like Revis and Holmes are two injuries that have really effected us this year, mostly Holmes though. Maybe Santonio isn't as great as some hype him up as, but we just don't have the big play element on the Jets this year. There is no one that can catch a 5 yard slant pass and take it to the house like Holmes can, not too mention that he is experienced and although him and Sanchez have went at it, he actually has some experience with Sanchez. I am no Sanchez supporter, but its hard throwing to guys coming off the street like Mardy Gilyard. The way I see it is this. We will end the season as an average NFL team. Whether thats at 8-8 or 9-7. Thats without the best defensive player in the NFL and without the best playmaker on the offense. Yeah, we got holes, but so does every team. We also are basically bringing in two big names players for free next year. We actually aren't, but in theory, getting Holmes and Revis back gives you two of your best players back that the team didn't have this year, yet they still are pretty average. Any average football team is one or two big pieces away from being a playoff contender. Heck, this team could make the playoffs this year, and make this argument silly.
