I'm not being a OHIO STATE Homer, cause I hated Gholston from Day 1.....I love Heyward. Perfect 3-4 DE for the Jets.
He's everything I'd want in a DE.... AND he can get to the QB. What more could you ask for? We need to trade up for him I don't care what the cost honestly. I'll mortgage all of 2011 for him. He's my Eric Berry for next year.
Doogie....he can get to the QB, but that's not his job...he needs to take on O-lineman so Pace, Taylor & CB blitz.. make plays
I kno that's not his job. It's just a huge plus to have a DE that is able to do it consistently. It's like having another blitzer to game plan for. Just helps Rex get that much more creative with his blitzes. Also since we didn't address our OLB need, I'd also be extremely happy with Von Miller. He lives to rip QBs heads off. Also would step in at JTs spot from Day 1 and we can send Gay Xerxes packing.
Jason Taylor is going to be gone so hopefully we can get a longterm pass rusher in next year's draft. Von Miller is someone I've had my eye on for a while.
Homer comment, but I think Romeus has the athleticism to rush from a 2 point stance. His coverage on the other hand...
Don't forget this man: MARCEL DAREUS. 6'3, 280. I forgot that he'd be a junior this upcoming season so I didn't have him in my mock, but he's a monster. PERFECT 34 DE prospect, and in my mind the best player on that D-Line for Bama last year for most of the season, especially in the NT game. He and Mark Barron are going to be two high picks in 2011. For Greg Romeus, I think he's just a 43 End, and not really the best fit for a 34.
Even though Rex feels he can find a DE in late rounds/UDFA/free agency, we are potentially becoming so stacked that we may be able to draft an elite DE prospect in the early rounds. This is very rough, but if everything works out in 2010, for 2011 we have: DB: Pool/Leonhard/Smith/Idehigbo; Revis/Cro/Wilson/Lowery/Warren. If most of these guys play as expected/pan out, we have no needs. The big question here is Brodney; but, if he steps up and he resign him, we're good to go. LB: Here's one spot I'd definitely like to draft a guy to take the JT/BT spot. DE: Again, Rex seems to like his depth, and since we're talking best-case-scenario, maybe V[a]G works out and our depth is again sufficient for 2011. DT: We'll be getting old here, so younger depth is becoming important. O-line: If Vlad and Slaussen work out, we have our 5 starters for 2011. WR/TE: We probably re-sign the better of Holmes/Edwards, keep Cotch and Keller. We should target a slot WR at some point. RB: Greene and McKnight are young and very talented. LT would still be under contract. We could possibly even add a DE in free agency to complete the rotation. There could also be a serviceable OLB available [again]. Slot WRs may be available for a reasonable price. I know this is a dreamy scenario, but it's not absurdly unlikely that much of this comes to fruition. In my "example", the only "need" we have is a DT who is young and has the talent to develop into a future starter. We'd have 3 other picks in the first 5 rounds to pick whoever-the-fuck we want. So, again, we would have soooo much flexibility that we could afford to draft a DE early. Rex may not "need" it, but Heyward would just take this defense to another level. I love the way we are doing things, and I'm so excited for how this sets us up for our future. Oh yeah, and we should be really damn good in 2010.
I know Rex doesn't want to take DL early in the draft.... but he has to next year. The team will be a set at every position minus the front 7 fortifications. It has to be all front 7 in 2011, along with someone at a skill position.
He has a lot to prove this season. He may very well be a 4-3 end but his athleticism could bump him to a 3-4. It's going to depend a lot on his senior season.
It's way early.....but front seven will need to be addressed. DE and 3-4Olb.....would be my guess. Jason Taylor is only a one year player, his 2nd year salary is crazy . Clayborn, Heyward, Romeus, Bowers.. for 3-4 DE. Von Miller for OLB.
I wonder if the draft is will fall like this years and someone like miller falls late 2nd. Now that would be NUTS :breakdance:
