I would rather have Pennington be the QB coach and Kris Jenkins be the handler if we fuck up and select Winston.
Winston has NFL OL, WRs, RBs and on defense his first two years. He's playing in a far inferior football conference and turns the ball over. Even taking away the off-field stuff it's not a slam dunk.
WW85 -- good stuff. We'd never look back on drafting Amari Cooper like we have so often with Sanchez, Wilson, Coples and Milliner. It will be good not to have to think what could have been. Picking Winston is a draft choice while we're backed into a corner. The risk far outweighs the reward. There will be safer options in 2016. At this point there's no need to rush. We're rebuilding.
I like the idea of taking one of this year's least risky players early in the 1st round, but I do have a couple of concerns. WR isn't a cornerstone position to build around to the same effect as a QB, OL, or DL. Obviously defensive line is not a priority at this point, although drafting Randy Gregory, re-signing Harrison, and extending Wilkerson would lock down the defensive line for the next 3 years if the front office doesn't see Coples in their future. Cooper is clearly the most NFL ready talent between WR, QB, and OL, but I think it would be worth trading down ~8 spots and taking the best OL available if they could get another 2nd round pick or a 2016 first rounder out of the deal. I also think that WR is one of the stronger positions on the roster. The Jets could use a receiver, but what they really need is a guy who can draw safety coverage to open up space for Decker, Kerley, and Amaro (and Harvin, in the event he can be signed to a reasonable contract) underneath. With any luck that can be Quincy Enunwa or TJ Graham, but I think a guy like Torrey Smith in free agency can fill that need while the Jets try to develop Enunwa and Evans and keep Salas on board as a cheap backup. Then the first round pick can be used to fill one of the many holes at QB, OL, LB, or CB. Just another reason why I would like to trade down. Obviously, though, you didn't account for trades in your mock. As far as the Jets are concerned, Cooper is the most NFL ready player for a team that is pretty well set at defensive line. As such, I'd be pretty excited to take Cooper in spite of all that gibberish I just wrote.
Really unlikely Stanley falls to us in the second. The combination of Zach Martin's success this past year and Stanley's game against USC has really raised his draft stock. He'll almost certainly be in the top 5 offensive linemen drafted, and there are a lot of teams hungry for offensive tackle help. If we take Cooper in the first it'll be OL or OLB in the second, depending on how we like the leftovers at the two positions. There are solid collections of talent in both areas this year.
