WR Prospects

Discussion in 'Draft' started by NCJetsfan, Feb 12, 2014.

  1. How can a player who caught 118 balls in pac 12 his JR year have bad hands?Oh wait cause their happens to be an anti lee youtube video with handpicked drops likely created by rival fan.

With a class this deep I have no issue with folks preferring other wrs to Lee but to claim he has bad hands is just crazy talk

Matthews didn't play well at the Senior Bowl, but he had some great practices that week. I do not think Matthews will have much trouble beating man coverage. Marqise Lee lacks the strength to consistently win vs. press coverage also (Lee is also injury prone). Matthews I think will adjust in the NFL just fine. Matthews will work CBs on every snap - and he's far more physical then most give him credit for.

I believe there is only 2 true #1 wide receivers in this draft - Watkins and Evans - as long as we can grab 2 starters FA and draft, we can have Matthews play the #2 WR role to start off.

Matthews route running ability and his hands are 2 skill-sets that will help him early in the NFL.

    Grade
    5.6 ?
    • 4.77 SEC
    • 12 REPS
    • 28.5 INCH
    • 110.0 INCH
    • 5'11" Height
    • 31 3/4" Arm Length
    • 205LBS. Weight
    • 10 1/4" Hands
    Overview
2013: Second-team All-SEC selection after playing in 13 games and starting 10. Had five 100-yard games. 2012: Played in 13 games and started in one. 2011: Played in 14 games and started one.

    Analysis
    Strengths
Good balance and body control. Savvy route runner -- uses stems and nods and works back to throws. Confident hands-catcher -- snatches throws off his frame. Extends and high points. Attacks throws and wins "50-50" balls. Makes some spectacular, acrobatic grabs. Good concentration and toughness over the middle. Does not go down without a fight after the catch. Willing blocker. Lined up outside and inside. Likes to compete and it shows. Has special-teams experience covering kicks. Team captain.
    Weaknesses
Has a fairly lean frame -- could stand to bulk up and get stronger in order to combat the jam. Lacks elite explosiveness and top-end speed -- does not have an extra gear to take the top off. Average line release, acceleration and suddenness. Could struggle to separate vs. quick-twitch cornerbacks. Large percentage of catches are contested. Lacks ideal height and is not a great leaper. Started just 12 career games.
    Bottom Line
Polished, quarterback-friendly, sure-handed possession receiver with a flare for the highlight-reel catch. Could be an effective No. 3 option, capable of lining up as a "Z" or slot, working short-to-intermediate and beating zone coverage.

I dont HATE him at all but i think he is overrated big time. His technique is bad and his drops are worse, his speed isn't elite for his size and finally the Jets don't have any luck with USC players lol

    Beckham >>> Lee

  8. I think you've got the top 2 who will go top 15 in Watkins & Evans.

After that I think there is a crowd of about 4 maybe 5 guys who are similar top 20 values right now

    1.Matthews-Best blend of size/speed
    2. Lee-Best route runner
    3. Beckham-well rounded & also returner
    4.Cooks-Most explosive
    5. Benjamin- most physical

While I believe that drafting a WR within the first three rounds of the draft, would anyone be opposed to
Dri Archer on the Jets? Of course he would NOT be selected in the first three rounds, but what about in the 5th round?
Everyone is talking about his speed which will help his stock, but he's shown that he can break plays for big gains.
He could be an Offensive/Special Teams weapon for the Jets. (WR/RB/KR/PR)

His technique is bad because he doesnt catch the ball with his hands! He uses his body way to much for my liking PLUS his injury problems

Im ready to bring in Lee!!!! what i havent seen from any jets WR's (cept Kerley at times) was good consistent route running! i think Lee has what it takes to get seperation in this league and once he gets the ball he gets a wholllleeee lotta YAC! thats what we need. (If ebron isnt there which he most likely wont be)

not really a fair comparison because Allen had a legit QB throwing to him.

Could we possibly bundle our 2nd pick and one of our 3rds to move up into the end of the first round? I would be ecstatic taking one of Evans/Ebron/Lee/Bechkam Jr with our 18 pick, and Cooks out of Oregon State with that last first rounder... I know this is the anti move up committee, but you gotta think we are going to take a receiver in the first two rounds anyway, so we would only be giving up that extra third.

I would be shocked if our first two picks were WR's.

I think one pick will be offense and one will be defense, and we'll split our third round picks between O and D as well.

After that, we'll see more offense. Probably take an OT, double dip at WR, grab a TE take another guard and maybe a pass catching RB.

I don't think you can quantify " first pick offense, next pick defense", it depends who is available when you're OTC. If 2 great complimentary WRs are available at #18 & #49 and they're the BPA...you draft both. (Rd 1 Cooks & Rd 2 Davante Adams are two good examples) It wouldn't surprise me come Sept...Kerley and Nelson are the only returning wideouts for the Jets.

Another scenario where I would draft 2 offensive players back to back: If th slight chance Ebron is available in Rd 1 and Davante Adams in Rd 2, I'm drafting both and not looking back.

No disrespect, but generally statements of drafting a specific position (not mentioning a player) in a certain round without knowing who is available just doesn't make any sense.

Well if that is the case, whats stopping them from going Defense in the first two rounds? What if Dee Ford is available in the first and Calvin Pryor in the second and their both BPA? They are both huge upgrades at positions of need.

Obviously if the talent is there go with it. I'm not saying reach for a need. If Evans is available at 18 and Amaro is available it 49, by all means, go for it. I just don't think that is too realistic.

My point was that I don't think this will be the offense heavy draft that everyone thinks it will. I've seen mock drafts showing the Jets will go offense with the first four picks, which isn't going to happen. I understand BPA and it is a strategy I agree with, but there are some limitations to it as well.

  18. Bare in mind I've been talking up archer for a very long time.Long before his 40. I think some team will reach on him perhaps as early as round 3.I think his true value is rounds 4-6.I doubt Idzik who is a bpa guy will be willing to reach on an unrersised RB

I wouldnt be disappointed if we land Ford and Pryor if other players that are better are off the board... Its a position of need and if they are the BPAs then great!

Having said that we would still need to add a WR in the draft and in FA... Also a TE in either FA or in the later rounds... There is no getting around it!! We need receivers and playmakers.

People have been talking about Dri Archer for over a year on this site. I agree some team will grab him in rd 3, I'm not sure if I would invest a pick that high on Archer who will have limited touches in the NFL.
