Harvin wants 10 Mill +, people need to realize the Jets aren't going to sign him on those terms.....he will be gone and we keep our 4th rounder.
I'm starting to feel that this will be a great opportunity for the Jets to finally use a very high pick on a big-time WR. And at 6, either Kevin White or Amari Cooper is likely to be on board and either would be a tremendous addition. To me, this is a MUCH better option than giving a free agent in their mid/upper 20's a huge contract. I'd rather get a pass-rusher in free agency and draft a WR at 6 than vice versa.
It's hard to convince people. That's why I made the thread predicated on Harvin leaving and WR being a big need. That could very well be the case. One of White or Cooper should be there and if we address the OLB with someone like Worilds then drafting a WR at 6 is a real possibility. Kinda exciting, a sexy pick that fills a need doesn't come along every year. It goes the other way too though, if we address WR with Marshall, Cobb.... then we can get one of the blue chip OLB.
The Jets are in an excellent position at #6, either White or Cooper will be in play, I'd take either in a heartbeat.
The only worry is that one of Winston or Mariota falls to #6 and we then have to decide between possibly upgrading out QB or picking up a potential stud WR. Ideally we'd cut Harvin and we'd get to keep our pick and use some of the cash on a 'serviceable' FA QB and go into the draft knowing we're going White, Cooper or ODB at #1.
If they like Mariota's potential here, then he's gotta be the pick. If not, I'm sure Cooper and or White will be there and would make an immediate and long-term impact on offense. Could also have some trade down options if Mariota is at 6
That's why I'm hoping Mariotas gone by #6. I don't want us to have the temptation of picking him over Cooper or White or having say the Eagles coming in with a trade that would make us miss out on either of those or a top OLB (unless its a trade we can't turn down such as 1st round, 1st round, 2or3 round + Foles).
Based on his comments, Macc seems torn on Percy. I have a feeling he will be gone. It doesn't sound like Percy is willing to restructure. Also Bowles seems like a no nonsense coach. As a fan I would love to see what Percy can do in Chan's spread offense. Imagine our starting lineup next year as this: X -- Amari Coooper / Kevin White Z -- Decker Slot -- Percy RB -- CJ Spiller / Ivory TE -- Charles Clay / Jordan Cameron You are suddenly looking at weapons everywhere. The 4th rounder is an early 4th though we'd have to give up. I say if we can't land Cobb or Marshall, maybe keep Percy for one more year. He can be cut year to year on his current deal with no dead money. If we cut him though, I would understand.
Remember your comment when Mariota is a top 10 QB in the league in a couple of years for another team. Jets fans. Sheesh.
I wouldn't cut Amaro but yeah, if you can sign either guy I think it makes sense to bench Amaro. (Amaro was a 50% of snaps or less player last year with Cumber and Sasquatch as his only competition.) Based on what I've seen of them, when healthy both guys are complete TEs, good blockers and more talented pass catchers. Amaro doesn't block. He's basically an oversized possession receiver who drops way too many passes that hit him in the numbers. Cameron had a down year with injuries (shoulder, concussion) and subpar play. The talent and upside are undeniable though. Cleveland situation was a cesspool. He's a prime "buy low" candidate. Clay is a stud. Versatile, athletic, sure handed. He's Tannehill's security blanket.
There are question marks about those pass rushers just as there are with Mariota. Gregory is a string bean, Beasley might not be an every down player, etc. The OLBs seem a lot more risky to me than Amari Cooper. The closest thing to a sure thing in this draft looks to be Leonard Williams.
Yes, I'd love it if we could sign either Clay or Cameron. I never wanted Amaro. I thought he was overrated and a product of the system he played in. He did better than I thought, but it makes me sick every time I think of the quality WRs we passed up for that stiff. I'd bench him too if we could sign one of those two.
Good points. I understand the desire of some fans to avoid a bust that high and to want a sure thing. That said, greatness is never achieved by taking the "safe" route. Even if he was there at #6, taking Williams wouldn't help the team at all, unless we let Ellis and/or Snacks walk. I'm not advocating taking wild, crazy risks or going with boom or bust picks like one poster here, but if there's any position worth gambling on, it's QB. With all the horrid QB play the Jets have had over the years, even with the seeming failures of Geno and Sanchez before him, I simply cannot understand the fear many Jets fans have in taking Mariota. Few players in the draft have his combination of talent, athleticism, football IQ, work ethic and character. The truth of the matter is when a player at any position taken that high busts it hurts and badly. It takes years for your team to get over that miss. I think a lot of posters either may be too young or have forgotten about Gholston. The Jets have had a lot of failures over the years - Johnny Lam Jones, Blair Thomas, I could go on and on, the list is seemingly endless. But you can't pull back like a turtle in its shell because of those failures. This is a new time, a new regime. You have to venture forth boldly. You go forth timidly, you'll assuredly fail. If you move forward with confidence, at least you have a chance of succeeding. I honestly think sometimes that some Jets fans don't want to win. They just want to have something to whine and gripe about with the team. I can understand having questions about Mariota since he comes from a spread-type offense, but when the need at QB is as great as ours is, and a prospect with the kind of talent and intangibles he has comes along, you have to forget those questions and roll the dice, not wimp out and play it safe.
We have big needs elsewhere on the roster tho'. Still comes down to FA (in 11 days) and if we can get a top, top WR like Cobb, Dez, etc.... then we'd be able to pass on Cooper/White and look at another prospect but as we stand right now..........take the WR.
This Why to not want Harvin A: He is injury prone B: He is not worth his current price tag C: He will cost a 4th Rounder D: All of the above The obvious answer is D and there is about a 5% chance he is on the roster after March 18th
