If Hill keeps dropping deep balls we could have a shocker at the final cuts. The Jets have a bunch of guys who are similar or better in performance this camp and some of them have real value in other roles.
That wouldn't surprise me either, but I think he sticks around because he's a reliable NFL receiver who can make tough catches and can mentor the young receivers as well as Geno. You need guys like Edwards around. Spadola and Rogers can develop at their own pace.
You're saying they would cut Hill? I haven't felt this good about a Jets receiving corp since 04. We have young receivers that are currently developing (Hill, Kerley, Gates, Spadola, Rogers) and some good vets (Holmes, Edwards, Obomanu) when you don't have a true number 1 receiver, the next best thing is the Jets approach and have a platoon of solid receivers that bring different things to the table.
He's saying that the Jets might try to send a message by cutting Hill for dropping passes & taking advantage of the competition/depth currently at WR. Highly doubtful in my opinion.Hill definitely needs to iron out the hands issue..but for every drop he's had..he's also had a long reception or TD. Long receptions from your WRS don't grow on trees. Even if his hands are only average. If he gives you 2-3 big plays a game he's a valuable asset
Usually receivers don't hit their stride until their 3rd year. Hill is a 2nd year player, I think he'll be fine. In the 2 preseason games Hill looks like an improved player.
Every year you see a few guys cut after their second camp because the team that has them realizes that they missed something in the evaluation process and for whatever reason they don't think they can fix the problem. Stephen Hill is one of those guys that has a ton of potential and works hard but he also has stone hands. Can you fix stone hands?
People keep asking this but we don't have to look any further then #17 on the Jets squad. Which is another reason I'd love to keep him on for this season, He had a similar issue with drops early in his career and has become a very solid possession type receiver in his older age, If he can help Hill, even just mentally it's worth having him on the squad.
17 was a pretty unique situation. He had a weird injury in one of his hands that was really hindering his ability to catch the ball until someone taught him how to overcome that.
You cannot compare Braylon Edwards and Stephen Hill as young players. Edwards was widely seen as the best WR in the country his last couple of years at Michigan. This is why he was selected #3 overall in the NFL draft. He was not an unpolished WR coming out of an option offense that did not throw the ball much like Hill was. He had drops issues his first 4 years in the league but that didn't stop him from being a scary receiver for the opposition to have to cover as early as his rookie year. He did have the finger issue and that did impact the drops in one season but he was always known to have an occasional drop dating back to his Michigan days. It was one of the things you accepted alongside his proven big play ability in the clutch.
Exactly. Dude is only 22. He was one of the youngest players in the league last year. He is by far the most physically gifted wr on this team.
I didn't say "would" have a shocker. I said "could" have a shocker. And I'll stand by that. One characteristic of strong personnel organizations is that they realize mistakes earlier and admit them and move on. That's not saying Hill is definitively a mistake at this point, although the trade up for him clearly was, it's just saying that if all he has going for him at this point is potential, well some things outweigh potential.
I see 0% chance that Hill is even mentioned when it comes to cuts. No way in hell do they cut him IMO. If there where good receivers in front of him, then maybe, but still it would be like a 15% chance I would think. He has dropped some balls, but its literally every day now that we hear of him making a big play. Worst case scenario is he would be buried in the depth chart and come in from time to time on a long pass attempt, but I just don't see any way that he will be cut. He's not a trouble maker, he's young, he has the potential to be a top receiver in this league, he's cheap, and he worked harder than any other player on this team, and probably out worked most other players in the NFL this offseason. Can't help but love this guy.
Hill is #1 on the depth chart! He's not getting cut. Even if Spadola or Rodgers starts tearing it up, Edwards will be cut long before Hill. That's just madness equivalent to saying Demario Davis or Austin Howard will be cut.
So we hear all these good things about Spadola and Rogers, but is it going to get to the point where we have to pick one of the other? Can we keep Both? 1)Santonio 2)Braylon 3)Kerley 4)Hill ... 5)Gates? 6)Spadola? 7) Rogers? Is this too many? Do we decide to cut Gates or is he Guaranteed? Or will Rogers or Spadola be put on Practice squad? I guess my main question is who gets the nod for the main roster, Spadola or Rogers?
Hill was drafted as a project - not a polished NFL ready WR. The guy has freakish measurables, a great work ethic, and could someday develop into a dominant WR, but he needs a lot of coaching. That process could take a year or two more and you don't just cut a guy like that without a clear indication that he just isn't getting it. Hill has demonstrated that he can play, but there is a lot of room for improvement. Let him develop. Yes, he could also bust like so many other highly drafted WRs have, but at this point, there is no sign that he is a lazy malcontent with no clue like AJ Jenkins or Jon Baldwin (by the way, hose guys were traded). And there is no way they are cutting him with Holmes on the shelf. At this point, Holmes is the more likely cut, but that isn't happening.
When it comes to hands, they have the same issue - concentration issues. My view on Hill is he's always out to make a big play. He needs to slow down and take it one step at a time. Focus on catching the ball THEN make your move. That part of his game is not natural yet in my opinion. You can tell out there that he's very much jittery and rushes himself - maybe that requires the game to slow down a little bit for him. No way in hell does he get cut "to make a point" He's not AJ Jenkins of the Chiefs (was a first rounder for the 49ers)
