The Browns traded two #1's for Quinn. They're definitely invested in him enough that a trade away would be impossible unless the receiving team was giving up a huge amount of value.
Let's keep in mind though that they're trying to lock up Mark Anderson long term which is gonna be a pretty hefty contract. What that tells me is that he is their guy long term. W/ Quinn's high salary that's alot of cap space in2 players..one of which who has no starting experience and is behind a relatively young player. Within this scenario, the next 2 years Quinn's brand name will fade as his time on the bench increases. The Browns may want to cut the cap space, and get something back for him before his league wide demand fades.
If the Browns lockup Anderson long-term and let Quinn fester on the bench they'll probably go 7-9 next year and then 6-10 the year after and so on. I think Anderson did a great job for them filling in this year, much like Ray Lucas did a great job filling in for us in 1999 and Billy Volek did a great job filling in for Tennessee in 2004 and numerous other backup QB's have done a great job filling in for the starter in the years they had to. He had a strong offensive line and several excellent receivers and a good tailback, basically everything you need to excel, and he completed 56.5% of his passes, which was the rap against him in the first place - he's not accurate enough to play at a high level for long. What the Browns should be doing is finding some sucker to take him in trade and then figuring out if Brady Quinn is the answer for them or not. They paid way too much to get Quinn and now they need to make that deal work or they're going to suck for awhile.
Um if you are the Browns, you take the deal and run like hell. they payed the #22 pick for Quinn, and now that they have Anderson, they don't really need him, and they could pick up a 1rst round pick again, a top 10 pick btw and help their situation even more. As a Jets fan, i would cry if they did this, I hate the #6 pick with a passion, it is a hair low for the cream of the crop guys, yet to high for the second tier guys but still Quinn is an unproven guy, and we would have the highest paid QB position in the NFL with Chads mega contract, Kellen and then Quinn's contract...
Oh I agree w/ you. I'm not sold on Anderson... It just looks like the Browns feel differently..and if they feel Anderson is their guy long term..they may wanna consider unloading quinn during is prime trade value.
I honestly don't believe the Browns are that interested in Anderson in the long run. I've heard ESPN mention a 3 year contract. Thats pretty short term for such a young QB who just went to the Pro Bowl. Like Br4w4y5ux said, he wasn't all that impressive given the OL he played behind (they gave up like 21 sacks all year) with the targets he had. I think if the Browns trade anyone, it's Anderson.
Why? Brady Quinn will be a fine NFL QB, it just doesn't make economical sense for Cle to trade him or the fact that they traded away 2 1st round picks to get him. Like someone said earlier, I could see Cleveland working a trade of Derek Anderson though.
