Play chess instead of checkers? Like tbe rest of the league is shaking in there boots because the Jets might have a high draft choice. We need alot more then one player.I feel like free agency might be more important then draft this year .If Cutlers willing to leave Chicago then why waste time on another rookie. We traded our best player, drafted a possible bust in Millner ,have zero talent at all skill positions on offense, drafted another bust with second round pick for two years in a row. This team needs the draft and free agency to be able to turn things around right away. Our draft record has been awful .The last 5 years the only players we drafted who are any good are Wilk,Coples,Sheldon,Kerley .4 players making a diffrence in 5 years Of drafts.I would not put all my chips in the draft ,witch makes tanking sound even more ridiculous
there are prospects everywhere, some guys who look good on a measurable sheet aren't good players, others who don't turn out to be good players. Good scouting dep'ts will find players anywhere. Tannenbaum saw players they liked and moved up and most worked out but if he was wrong he would have lost his job years earlier but he and his scouting staff did a good job for the most part. Farrior was here 5 years, was mediocre 4 and good 1. he traded a HOF LT for him. Horrible job. The only reason Ferguson was still around in rd 7 was b/c of a failed drug test. he had a million picks and only had a few good ones as you pointed out PLUS a ton of the picks didn't even make the team as rookies! or were gone by year 2. Just an awful job. I appreciate BP taking us out of the dark ages as a coach but as a GM type he was failure outside of overpaying for a few FAs. Al Groh ran that draft.
If a team has a GM that has a clue and a scouting department that does its job, then that team doesn't get to sniff blue chip prospects, ever. Once in ten years maybe, if something really goes bad (Peyton Manning taking an early season ending injury).
It depends on what you're looking for though. If you're looking for a particular type of player, like hard workers or guys who like contact or if you have a plan to make specific conversions of players from position to position you can draft pretty well even in the mid to late stages of the 1st round. The Steelers did this very well for about a decade from early 90's to early 00's. Then something broke in the process and their drafts became more pedestrian and they've declined as a result of that.
Went with the better record for more positive things to build on. A team can get talent lots of ways -- trades, free agency, and the draft, but there's only one place to get wins. Success does a lot for an organization. It helps change the culture and greatly influences how members view themselves and each other. Overcoming their talent deficiency and finishing at least 8-8 would do a lot to stabilize the team and the players pride in themselves. As a manager, that's more important to me than a higher pick. That isn't to say that a high draft pick isn't important. Certainly, there's value to it. However, Idzik still has me believing that he'll draft well. Now, with a full year to get his people out scouting and evaluating available talent, having a lot of free money, Idzik's going to running and building the roster he wants. If he had any part in building the Seahawks roster, I'd be happy to get those kind of results, most of which weren't high picks.
Im with you on this,Sure the draft is important but hope is still alive and theres 4 games left. Our draft record is a joke anyway
Usually when I think blue chip I'm thinking guys that are top 5 "can't miss" picks. The Lions are the example I use because of all the years they drafted can't miss receivers, and only actually hit on Megatron. What you're talking about is good drafting overall. Something the Jets have lacked for the most part in recent years. They've done phenomenally on the defensive front 7... otherwise... bleh.
