I don't know what it is about our losses this season that would make you think our final 3 would be close ones. Are the Panthers just going to play their 3rd stringers? The 2nd best QB on the board just declared he's returning to college this season. The 3rd best QB prospect might soon do the same (Hundley). So even picking at #8, we could be getting like the 5th best guy (had everyone come out). That's a guaranteed good player? I'm not reaching in the first round, we have too many holes on offense. Take BPA on offense, it won't be a QB where we are picking.
IIRC, we had #1 back to back Keyshawn was 1996. Peyton turned down Bill Parcells to come out early in 1997 We would up trading down & took Farrior (who, of course would up being a great Steeler LB)
we got Key for having the #1 pick in 1996, we also had it in 1997 which we traded to SL and they took a HOF LT. Parcells actually turned Peyton. The Mannings wanted assurances that BP would take Peyton with the 1 overall and he refused to give them that.
That's true I'm not optimistic about the last 4 although I'd love to see them stick to Miami if the Dolphins need a win
Do you think this revisionist history on Manning's part? I never saw him as a NYC type of QB, and Archie said he was not cut out for NYC ( unlike Eli)
Not really as I remember hearing this at the time. Here is an article from 1997 after Peyton announced http://articles.baltimoresun.com/1997-03-09/sports/1997068188_1_bill-parcells-archie-manning-peyton
Believe it or not I wasn't aware that Mariota declared he was staying 20 whole hours ago. It's debatable that Hundley is even the 3rd best QB on the board, but even if you pretend that he is it's a lot more likely that he will come out now that Mariota isn't in the running. That still leaves Carr and the possibility of trading a 3rd+4th to move up from the 8-9th pick for Teddy if he makes it to 4-5th. If none of those things pan out by draft day it's then possible to trade back for one of the other QB's and gain an extra 2nd in the process. Then if none of those numerous scenarios make sense and there's a ton of value going BPA at another position, that would become yet another option too. If that's the direction the team better get really stocked with talent between draft and FA and be prepared to sacrifice a bunch to trade up for a top QB in 2015. Nothing about the losses makes me think the next ones will be close, which is why I said that won't be the easy part. Just for Rex's sake, it would be good if it could work out that way. 4 losses would be better yet if Rex could stay, not sure that would happen though. The point is that losses are good at this point, especially if it doesn't set off a regime change in the process that will set the team back an extra 2-3 years beyond what it's already set back.
None of the choices appealed to me. I'd have selected "Better record - only losers want to lose games".
In retrospect, this was a huge blunder by Parcells especially in light of trading down to get Farrior, who didn't blossom until he left NY
meaningless wins aren't wins at all. I rooted for the team early when I thought it was a 6-10 year and I really rooted for them when it was 5-4 with a realistic playoff chance even though I knew they wouldn't win the Super Bowl but they blew it and it's over. Winning now costs more wins in the coming years when wins actually might mean something, so you've got it backwards. I'll say that it's a fine line between losing and getting Rex canned but his personnel decisions, clock/challenge management, and offensive ineptitude are pretty disturbing in general. Given the makeup of the roster I'd like to see heavy infusion of offensive resources where he gets 1-2 years to prove himself and if not it won't cost so much to cut ties with him. I have no idea why someone would root for an 8-8 year with no playoff chances, it's the worst possible outcome for a season and the dumb wins at the end hardly feel good besides.
