I'd make this trade, I don't think Darnold holds much trade value by himself, so packaging him with a pick could see us moving up. My preference would be -Chase -Pitts -Surtain
I get your point but comp picks don't happen until the entire 3rd round has elapsed, effectively occurring where the early 4th round should be. I'd say a 4th round pick plus maybe a late conditional pick should be the goalposts for that trade cutoff.
I think the only one available at 9 would be Waddle and I don't think it works be with it to move up for him.
People have to stop saying this. It's not true. Yes, it's POSSIBLE that the Jets would receive a 3rd round comp pick, depending on who they sign as FAs next off season. The Jets could sign someone that would cancel out Sam's contract and get nothing. It's not a certainty if they let him walk in FA. Even if they did get a comp pick, it would be for the 2023 draft. And it might not even be a third rounder depending on the contract Sam signs.
I would absolutely do this pick. I personally don’t think it’s enough for Broncos to do that deal though. Now the question is who would be available at 9 that JD is targeting? Pitts would be unbelievable. I guess I could see them trading back for more picks if they don’t get their targets at number 9. I think Parsons is an option too.
Isn't the Broncos new GM running the draft? I know Elway is supposed to have liked Sam, but I don't know about the new guy.
But to answer the question... I think I would go for that trade. It sounds like Sam's value is bottoming out so it looks like a decent haul to me.
I think anything less than a third and it’s worth holding on to him to hopefully increase his value. The reward of increasing his value is worth the risk that you get only a slightly worse compensatory pick that could be considered a 4th round. It’s still worth the risk of losing the potential pick to hold onto him and hope his value increases so it’s not unreasonable to make the decision based on the possible pick. unless you believe JD and Saleh are on a short leash and won’t be here in 2023, it doesn’t matter if the extra third round pick is this year or two years from now. They are working on a long enough timeline that there is no difference — it will benefit them identically to have an extra pick in 2023 as it would in 2021. That’s just an irrelevant criticism.
I understand, but I think I'd do it for Waddle, but maybe not, I'd have to make sure that his medicals checked out with no lasting effects from the injury, and would still have to spend some time pondering that. I think Waddle will be a great Pro both as a WR and KR, but I'd have to look at who I think would be available at #23 and the 3rd round pick. Question: Assuming 4 QBs go first, and then the 4 (Sewell, Pitts, Chase, Waddle), that would leave Slater, Parsons & Surtain. You don't think one of those is worth the trade? I'd do that it a NY minute
Honestly, I don't think so. Maybe, assuming the third round pick we are giving up is Seattle's. Actually if those 4 were gone I think Smith would be the pick for me - @ouchy
Fair enough, but I disagree. I think Waddle, Parsons, Surtain, and Slater are ALL better prospects than Smith. Parsons would be great in our D at WLB. Surtain would be the true #1 CB we haven't had since Revis. I believe that Slater will either be a perennial All Pro RG or RT. Since I don't think it necessary or wise to have both OTs top ten picks, and I think top ten is too high to take an OG, I'd probably reluctantly pass on Slater. I'd rather use that pick on an offensive player, but I think Parsons and Surtain are both better players/prospects than Waddle or Smith, I'd probably go with Surtain.
I like the idea of getting an impact draft slot but this is selling too low for Sam. I’d just as soon hold on at that point to at least defuse the pressure of making whoever a day 1 starter. other random thoughts. Doesn’t saleh use zone. Do we need lockdown and ultra expensive corners? I’m intrigued by Pitts but also wary that all of the highly picked TEs seem to be fools gold for whatever reason
We're going to get a first hand look twice a year at how mistaken you are about Smith. In the 36 years since Rice was drafted there has never been another WR that had his skill set down so completely and smoothly. But it takes a lot more then talent to be the next Jerry Rice. It also takes the work ethic to practice above and beyond what is expected, to have the fire to work harder then everyone else in the building. It takes a humble man with something to prove who values winning over fame, values loyalty over money, and makes beating his man an obsession. This is called a champion player. The kind of players we need. We'd need both Surtain and safety help over the top to just contain Smith to 100 yards because at the end of the day, he is more then Rice was. He is a redzone nightmare. Anyone who passes over the next Jerry Rice is a fool. A team who worked the draft as well as the dolphins worked this draft aren't fools. I guarantee you they see what I see in Smith and its the Jets fate to learn the hard way.
Agree. We have no backup as it is. Good chance they keep Sam for another season either to start the first couple of games or as the #2.
I've been saying to trade up since the offseason ended and everyone was yelling at me for suggesting this, including you. Now you start a thread on it?? Anyway, it will take way more than that to get into the top ten of this draft. If I'm trading up it is to #4. I want the option to draft Chase or Pitts, both of who will be gone by 9. At least we would be in a very strong position on draft day if someone caves and makes a huge offer for that pick. So many options with #4. If I were the Broncos I would hold onto that #9 pick to see who falls. That would net them a huge return if someone unexpectedly fell. Sam trade should be separate if the Broncos want him. I was watching scouting tapes on Friermuth. He may be a viable option at #23 if we stay there.
Hopefully not. Jets TE in the first round is not a good recipe. If we go by pure need we better pray that Teven Jenkins is available at 23. The guy is an animal.
In general, I am still averse to trading up. This is a unique situation where we could perhaps use Elway's supposed infatuation with Sam to get another elite prospect. Normally, I wouldn't even consider it, and wouldn't consider it if it was just draft picks or if it would cost any more than the #23 and our lower 3rd round pick. I wouldn't use #66. Also, I was curious what others thought about trading up. Just because I asked doesn't mean that I'm suddenly all for trading up or that I routinely think it's a good idea or wise. I'd love to add Freiermuth. He is a mismatch as a receiver, and would greatly help the rushing attack as well.
