Ask yourself this: What are Jones strength and weaknesses as a Lineman? Strength's: Agility, technique and quickness off the snap Weaknesses: Strength, size for the OT position, and Man-up run blocking. W/ that in mind, what skillset is neccessary to play Center in the NFL? Agility, quickness off the snap, lateral quickness, and the ability to make audibles. Doesn't that sound alil bit like what Jones offers? Additionally he has ideal size for the center position(Usually around 6'2- 6'4 and 290-300 lbs). Could we just draft a Center instead? Sure. But Center is a position that is traditionally a difficult one to draft for. Jeff Faine hasn't exactly lit up the field, and Jon St. Claire is barely holding on as a back-up OT. Alot of centers in the NFL end up switching from other positions, b/c college centers usually lack the size and strength to be successful. There are obviously exceptions. Nick Mangold could indeed be one. But I'd much rather move a guy who's going into his 3rd year in our system, who we know has the skillset to handle the position, as opposed to drafting a guy to play a position that traditionally is a crapshoot. So what does moving Jones to center mean short and long term? 1.We place a guy w/ experience in the system to a position that suits him well 2.We add continuity/cohesion to a line that is desperately gonna need it. 3. We avoid the risk of drafting a player at a position that is a risk, who will additionally have to start right away. Is this completely fool proof? Absolutely not.Jones could fall flat on his face at Center. But I recall after Jones was drafted, Bradway saying that they think he's capable of playing all 5 Ol positions including Center. And considering next year will be a transitional year for the OL, this maybe a risk worth taking.
Just to clarify..it will be his 3rd year as a Jet but his FIRST in the system. We have a new OC and he will dictate the system. And I'm not sure you should be using Terry Bradway as a reference.
My thoughts: First, we can't draft Davis at 4. If we trade down, then drafting him becomes more feasible. If we trade Abe for a 1st rounder, drafting Davis also becomes more reasonable. If Pennington returns (and all indications are that he will), getting a playmaker like Davis would be ideal. Brees, who doesn't have a cannon either, was able to throw 6-8 yard routes to Gates, and let Gates improvise. Davis could fill a similar role. With our second pick in the first round, we could get a solid OL like Winston or go RB and take Maroney. If we can get a 2nd round pick by trading down, we can then use both 2nd rounders on OL (there will be GOOD O-lineman available in Rd 2 without a doubt, especially if the acquired pick is early in rd 2).
Come on guys we have done so well in the past at drafting Tight Ends lets do it again...Ha Ha..I still get chills hearing Warren Sapps name in my dreams...
Vernon Davis is a freak of nature...worth the 4 pick for us? No, we have bigger needs. Worth the 4 pick in general, absolutely! If we traded down, but remained in the top 10 this guy has to be a consideration. He will definitely go top 10.
I always hated this logic, you can play this game with every position. We shouldn't draft Deangelo Williams or Lendale White. Look what happenned when we drafted Blair Thomas, Roger Vick, etc. We shouldn't draft Jay Cutler or Vince Young. Look what happened when they drafted Browning Neagle.
I'd take him if we got an extra first rounder from Denver. Will he be available in the early second round at our position? That would be the best move.
i agree 100%. I'd love Davis if we had 2 1st rounders. And for the record, i knew about Vernon Davis since last year. I didnt need a combine to validate him. Watch him during a game, and you see a one man wrecking crew. I'd be cheering for VD like i've never cheered for VD before:wink:
