is there even a chance we sign sharper? but yes sharper, and yes my hate for JT played into the decision cuz i think a good pass rusher would really put us over the top. then again we havent really seen what our pass rush, which was pretty good last year, can do with a better secondary than last year.
comes down to if Sharper really wants to be a Jet he will either take a big pay cut, or wait til july 22nd(or june 22 dont remember)
I do wish Jason Taylor would make up his fucking mind already: http://www.nola.com/saints/index.ssf/2010/04/review_of_new_orleans_saints_g.html
Sharper hands down. I don't want Taylor on this team. The guy has always been disrespectful to the fans. Now that he thinks he can get something out of NY from the entertainment industry he wants to be a part of the team. Stay down in South Beach with those dance costumes!
This doesn't even have to do with the massive hate Jason Taylor has built up over the years. It has all to do with Darren Sharper being a better player.
Sharper is absolutely the better player right now. I think there was little doubt about that. But we have a lot more talent at FS than we do at pass-rushing OLB right now. There are certainly options at both positions in the draft, but it seems to me that there are more quality safeties that we could draft in the 2nd round or 3rd round (if we make a trade). And to me, that's why it's closer than it would appear. We will be alright at FS without Sharper, even if we don't draft anyone. But without JT, we will have the same issues with a lack of a pass-rush that we had last year, unless a draft pick can make an immediate impact.
Taylor would be a nice addition to our LB rotation to help bolster our pass rush.....but I'm with the majority, Sharper's addition could make us real special.... QB's only completed 35.1% of their passes when throwing into Sharper's coverage last year, and a QB rating of 34.7 If we added that to a secondary that already includes Darrelle Revis (36.9%, 32.3) Antonio Cromartie (57%, 70.9) Jim Leonhard (40%, 30) Brodney Pool (45,5%, 70.5) Dwight Lowery (47.9%, 44.3) That would have the potential to be one of the hardest secondaries to throw against, the leagues seen in a long long time......especially if Cro's game improves as expected with his return to playing mainly man coverage. With or without Sharper this secondary is already drool inducing....but add his coverage and ball hawking skills to it, it'd have the potential to be legendary.
With Sharper though, after July 22nd, the Jets (or anyone for that matter) are free to sign him, unless the Saints tender him at 110% of his 2009 salary, which was $1.7 million. That means all the Saints would have to give him would be $1.87 million. Can't see them letting that pass. He probably wanted way more than that and that's why the Saints were willing to let him shop around. They know they can have him back at $1.87 million. As much as I'd like it, can't see it happening.
