He'll always have good corners. He just isn't likely to be able to maintain the highest paid corner of all time. Great safeties make $8 to $10 million a year. I mean the top-of-the-line like Polamalu and Reed.
C'mon. Why are people talking about Revis leaving??? Why does every thread have to include doom and gloom that has nothing to do with the topic? An elite front 7 can make up for a weaker secondary, just as an elite secondary can make up for weak pass rush. There certainly isn't just one way to build a defense. I think Rex has it right, focusing on corners first. In a passing league, if you have elite corners, even if your pass rush is weak, it will still be tough to hit the target. With an elite D line, the QB might have to release the ball earlier, but if the WRs are open, it's not going to matter. A good QB can overcome good pass rush by reading the defense and releasing quickly, but that's not going to help when your WRs are smothered in coverage. We saw it with Tom Brady in the 2010 playoff game. He was standing in the pocket untouched for what seemed like forever on some of those plays. He still couldn't find an open man to pass to. That's what an elite secondary does and why I feel it's more important than pass rush in today's league. Obviously they both help, however. With Revis, though, pass rush is significantly less important for us, although an elite LB would certainly put our D over the top.
Without Revis, we would have had an extra $10mil in cap space on average over the last 4 years. We could have easily found a good pass rusher to compliment Cro and co., or we could have found a decent #2 or #3 CB besides Cro and Wilson, and a decent LB. Rex would have targeted one of these CBs in 2009: Foxworth, Bodden, Hall, Greer... OLB targets in 2009: Not much talent was out there. Suggs was the best and he was tagged. ILB targets in 2009: I think we would have had Ray Lewis in town in place of Bart Scott. Maybe even both.
Do not want to think about life without Revis . Hope he stays a JET for life, regardless of cap implications. He's a HOF'er. Drafted by us, should stay with us. Imagine him going to a division rival............. :uke::
ratliff, carr and lee are excellent players spencer is solid and carter and claiborne are young players with tons of potential dallas has a lot of talent on defense
Wait, no franchise tag? Oh shite! That's because the CBA is expiring, isn't it? I keep forgetting about that....
Yeah, Jets can not tag Revis after the 2013 season. If Revis holds out prior to the end of 2013 season, Revis is automatically extended for another 3 years at $6mil a year I believe and even after that, Jets would have the right to tag him. So Revis just can not hold out. If he does, Jets will play hardball and let him waste a yr in his prime if it comes to that.
Oh damn. I never realized that was in his contract. When I read that I just assumed it would have something to do with the CBA (Doesn't everything nowadays?). This is an entirely different kettle of fish. Okay, this brings up another question then. Didn't Revis already hold out? Was that prior to signing this contract then? thanks!
Yes, he held out prior to this deal. Problem for the jets is that those extra years void and a whack of money accelerates on to the 2013 cap if they don't renegotiate or move him. Something has to give.
even if your point made any sense, wtf does it have to do with a thread about how rex would have built this defense without revis?
Moving him will also cause the big hit on the cap. When you trade a player all prorated bonus money comes forward and is applied immediately. The Jets may have an option to spread it over two years, not sure how the new CBA works on that issue. Revis pro-rated bonuses for 2013 count $3 million on the cap currently but $12 million as soon as the contract voids to 4 years after he presumably does not hold out before then. I believe his actual cap number for 2013 if he does not hold out is a bit north of $18 million, including the bonus bits coming forward at that point. The cost to trade him in 2013 will be at least $12 million on the cap.
The 2010 playoff game was one of the best defensive schemes Rex came up with and completely caught Brady and the Pats off guard because of the lack of constant blitzes. You are looking at like if we don't have Revis, we don't have good corners. We do have good corners behind Revis and a great pass rush can mask losing an elite corner like Revis. A great pass rush combined with Rex a defensive genius will definitely find a way to mask losing an elite corner. Right not the Jets don't know if they have a great pass rush, but at the end of the year they will know better what they have with Wilkerson and Ellis and hopefully see what Coples is capable of. The way you wrote your post makes it seem like a black and white issue where if you have an elite pass rush, you don't have good corners. You need good corners and good pass rush, but a good pass rush is much more valuable than an elite set of corners. You do need a good secondary, but you can mask that easier (see the Giants, Patriots, Saints, Packers,) of last year or an example. None of these teams had good secondaries, but they hid them with blitzes, front3/4 pressure, and good QB play. It's harder to hide a weak pass rush with blitzes as seen by why Rex backed away from the blitz happy defense of 2009.
Without Revis, I think Rex would still have been trying to obtain solid corners. Cromartie as a first option would not make the Jets D top 10.
