I was actually thinking about this the other day. Never before have we been so close to each other in terms of needs/talent base. With two of, if not the two best, GMs in the sport going head to head, guys like Zito must be salivating for free agency to start.
From the title of the thread, I think I can post what I feel in here without feeling like a troll because I've been a Cards most of my 36 years. No more apologizing for winning, I know the Mets fans on here follow their team with much more passion than the casual fan like myself. I get that, and again, I feel for you guys. But I do have a hard time understanding the outright hatred of the Cardinals in that other thread, its not like the two teams have any kind of outstanding rivalry going. If the Mets had made it, I would have been pulling for them, just because I know it means so much to the fans I know. I see my example of sportsmanship is lost when the shoe's on the other foot. Whatever. I don't know the first thing about Detroit, I only follow the Cards during the season and barely watch the games until the playoffs (I told you I was a casual fan, I have other things going on I consider more important than baseball during the regular season.) I do know that the Cards are most likely nearing the end of the window of opportunity for a championship, the run of division titles is probably nearing an end (Although with Jockety running the FO, it may go on a few more years) but in any case, this team of veterans knows this is it and the second chances are dwindling. So I do expect a fight, not a sweep. I do know that this is the first WS between teams with losing records past the all-star break, so neither team should be here. That doesn't lead me to believe that either team has a benefit of a doubt as to being the dominant team going in. I'll be watching, even if I'm the only one. Cards in 7.
The Mets and Cards used to be big rivals when they were in the NL East together pre '94. The rivalry was especially heated during the 80s when both the Mets and Cards were trading div titles.
I don't remember much that far back, just the WS games. I never got into the sport all that much. But I do know I hate the Braves, only because their fans are all around me and they are such bandwagoners its pitiful. Braves merchandise everywhere when they're winning, and it all goes back into storage again when they're losing. And of course, the Cubs  edit: Junc, your memory is amazing. This is the second time you've had to fill me in on things I either misremembered or forgot. You definitely get my vote for most knowledgable poster.
All winning teams(except the Nets and Devils) have bandwagon fans. I have never seen more Mets stuff at a Jet game than I did at the Miami game(that includes '99 and '00 when they made the playoffs) and I have never seen more people wearing Mets stuff on a daily basis. When you win you get bandwagon fans.
In 1997 I met a 40 yeard old man from California who claimed he was a Florida Marlins fan, he had a Marlins jacket and everything. How emotional it must have been for him when they finally won it all.
Amazing win by the Cardinals!!! This series could be interesting. I'll say Tigers in 5 instead of 4 now.
Well, the Mets fans were right, this was a boring game. I thought Looper was going to F around all night, he must have thrown 50 pitches to get 3 outs...but other than the 9th, it was a snooze. 7-2 Cards, with a rookie pitching 3 hits through 8. Now, the Tigers will get to face even better pitchers. Cards in 5
I still really don't like the Cubs and they haven't been in the Mets division since 1993. Now consider that the Cardinals were also once in the Mets division and consider that the Cardinals were usually much better than the Cubs. You can see why I don't like the Cardinals. (That said, I still dislike the Cubs more.) I was 7 years old when the 1985 season began. That's about the age most of us started following sports. Those first few seasons left a indelible mark on me. The division winners in the old NL East, pre-Wild Card days starting with the first season where I was on board from day 1: 1985- Cardinals (Mets 3 games behind) 1986- Mets 1987- Cardinals (Mets 3 games behind) 1988- Mets 1989- Cubs (Mets 6 games behind) 1990- Pirates (Mets 4 games behind) 1991- Pirates (Mets 20.5 games behind) 1992- Pirates (Mets 24 games behind) 1993- Phillies (Mets 38 games behind) By the way, Cardinals fans absolutely hate New York and the Mets. I have a big problem with Albert Pujols. Something was strange about him ever since his rookie season. I have a problem with his "injury" of earlier this year. That was the most bogus thing I have ever seen on a diamond. I have a problem with his comments about Tom Glavine. I have a problem with Tony LaRussa. He changed the game in the late 1980s in the way he went about using pitchers. I miss the complete game. I miss the two-inning save. Oh, I did not watch Game 1.
I missed the whole game, but I did see that play. There's no question in my mind that he purposely ran into him. And it wasn't even inside the baseline! He had to go out of his way to make a huge turn to run into him, and to top it off, he used his hands to push him down. That is true douchebaggery.
I'm done talking about it. It's over and done with now, so I would rather not start any spot-fires at this point. I'll let what I wrote already speak for itself, but otherwise, I'm thinking of the Yankees and Mets in terms of 2007 at this point.
Douchebag or not, it certainly seems that Rolen has magically become healthy over the last couple of games.
They just said it may snow tonight in Detroit. That would be strange for a baseball game. Do you play during snow? Its not the same as rain, ya know?
Not snowing yet. Apparently Kenny Rogers had some sort of foreign substance on the base of his thumb in the first inning, which he washed off before coming out for the second inning.
