We had one of the best DLs in the NFL. Rex had his draft picks. Plus Harris etc. at linebacker. You can't have great players at every position. Almost every team was using beat up scrub secondaries including the Steelers. And our secondary wasn't the worst in the NFL. It was functional but because of his schemes and the overuse of blitzing packages on 3rd down esp they got beat for two reasons: the players not being good cover corners and a scheme not tailored to the talent. Plus in terms of coverage: I though that Walls and Williams were adequate. Williams a good pickup during the season who thanks to Rex and Thurmond got a chance to play. As for Qb play: Geno after playing well down the stretch in 2013 had the sophomore jinx. Not unusual. And was a huge disappointment. And Vick a veteran played poorly when he got a chance. The only positive thing was that Geno was re-inserted and played well the last five games. Not everyone thinks he's a complete bust like you do. Even Parcells recently said he has talent and could end up being ok. Rex had .500 talent but ended up a 4-12. You can't exonerate him completely on any of this.
it's definitely the defense you should be worried about. throw in Robert Woods to the above list, and it's a great set of receiving options. however, like us, they have a QB and offensive line who will scare no one. they'll want to run the ball as to not expose Cassel, and McCoy dancing behind that line won't be very efficient. i'd bet they struggle consistently on offense despite those receivers. spending money on the line would've been better use of their cap.
its one thing not to be great everywhere... its another to be bad in most spots, including the most important position. Ad can we not compare the jets to the steelers considering they have a top 10, 2 time champion QB and we had a 2nd year qb who was among the leagues worst? its alot easier to overcome things with a good QB if it wasnt the worst it was right there. bottom 3 for sure. we didnt have .500 talent, we had .250 talent.
there offense kinda stunk last year too and that didnt stop them from destroying us. we need to worry about thier defense. the one game we turned it over what 4 time sin our first 6 snaps or something absurd like that?
We had the worst group of corners in the NFL bar none, and a rookie FS who really struggled. it was a bottom barrel secondary. i'd like to know what 'schemes' would've solved that, as you seem to keep repeating that but never provide any substance. throughout the year i saw them try Cover 3, Cover 2, Cover 1, underneath zones, zone blitzes, rushing 3, rushing 4, etc.... noticeably missing was the 46, as we flat out didn't have the personnel to even attempt it. the common denominator with all these coverages and fronts, there were coverage problems. the less heat we dialed, the more time QB's had to find open guys.......and there was always someone open. send a zone blitz with an ILB, and good QB's were able to hit the hot route with ease. Rex's D is predicated on making QB's job very difficult, yet opposing QB's had it very easy this year. maybe he could've done some things better.....ran more of some looks, less of others.. but end of the day, you cannot hide an entire secondary......even with a very good Dline. not sure what 'scheme' you believe would accomplish that.
i don't think i'd credit their D so much for that game, as i would credit Geno. that was one of the worst displays of QB'ing i've ever seen.. D really didn't have to do much, he was giving them the ball. this year that D will be just as good, if not better. so hopefully we don't put up another QB performance like that.
Who cares what the people on the board thought. People were making predictions bAsed on the prior years record and no fan wants to admit a step backward. Realistically we overachieved in 2013. And in 2014 came back to earth. Also in 2013 there were a couple of wins that came down to some odd plays (tb and vs New England for example) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
First it's a struggle for any franchise to select and develop a starting Qb. The Jets thought they had theirs in Sanchez. And then Geno. This is going on all around the NFL. Even guys who were supposedly long term franchise Qbs like Cutler and RG3 have regressed. So to expect Idzik in under 2 years to find Nirvana and then when he doesn't fire him is unintelligent. I don't agree about the Dbs. There was a strong effort esp through the draft to rebuild the secondary. The fans complain about the secondary and he drafts Dbs they scream and yell because he didn't take a wide receiver which if Watkins or Beckham were still on the board he probably would have taken them. With these fans you can do no right unless you win. One bad season they want you out! There has to be a scapegoat for them. Except Rex the premiere bullshit artist of all time.
Bills got some pretty good weapons, but I'm not scared of Cassel. That defense is good though, I really thought Kiko was a really good player for them.
It's great to have 20-20 hindsight. But the fact was that most fans and the press didn't think we had that lack of talent. And not too many even thought it was a stretch to go with Geno in 2014. Because he played well the last four games of 2013. It looked like he was going to be a bonafide option as starting Qb. He started off his rookie year poorly (as most do) but improved down the stretch. It takes time for a Qb to develop. Now in 2015 it's almost the same equation: he played poorly and had that first Buffalo game which was one of the worst Qb efforts of all time. But again only for a quarter. Rex took him out of the game. But he improved and had a good last five games. Idzik took too many calculated chances in 2014 and none of them worked out. And he got fired. I'm sure Mac got that lesson. You have to cover yourself even if it's not the smartest thing to do.
20/20 hindsight to 2013 is what led to 2014 expectations at the time amongst fans, including myself. And many in the media questioned our qb and lack of secondary heading into the season. I don't think anyone used the phrase "bonafide qb" when discussing geno. People were more discussing if he could build upon what he did down the stretch. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
20-20 hindsight is saying you knew the results after the case. Nobody thought we were going to be a 4-12 after an 8-8 esp. after a struggling rookie Qb improved down the stretch. No one thought we were talent wise a playoff team. Although some thought we could if things broke right (like winning a lot of close games) and Geno improved we would be better. Most thought a 7-9-a 9-7. Nothing broke right for this team in 2014 and part of this was mediocre coaching. All kinds of penalties which again showed a Rex team to be undisciplined. Poor judgments on the field by him which can lose games. Not exactly inspiring pressers after the game by Rex when he ceded almost every week that he had been outcoached. He had loads of talent on defense plus more talent on offense with Decker, etc. It wasn't all on Rex that's for sure. But he did a bad job as did Idzik. Both were fired. I thought that Idzik had a good plan to build through the draft and sign free agents with the emphasis on the draft.
That alone is not what Idzik was fired. He was fired because too many of his draft picks have contributed little or nothing, he failed to address the need CB last off season in spite of having the money to sign someone; alienated people in the front office; made no changes to the scouting dept.; in what was possibly a historically great draft, failed to come away with a topflight WR; was too slow, passive and methodical, when the league demands decisiveness and quick actions; and because his QB wasn't cutting it. It was not "unintelligent" to fire him. It would have been stupid to keep him imo. He obviously was in over his head. Sometimes it's better to accept that you made a mistake and cut your losses quickly rather than hold on and hope that things get better. He had already wasted a 12 player draft. It would have been sheer insanity to let him butcher this off season with all the cap space the team had and holes/needs on the team that he hadn't fixed in two off seasons.
Sorry, to be honest, I lost interest after you typed the name "Idzik". As Dr. McCoy said at the beginning of each Star Trek episode about the latest Federation Security Officer to buy the farm, "He's dead, Jim!!"
I'm the biggest Jet hommie on here so listen up. Anyone who things Chan Gailey's offense run by Geno Smith (or Fitzpatrick) is gonna run rough shod over Ryan's defense with those Buffalo starters has been asleep for the last 5 years.
His drafts are not busts yet. But I'm tired of making this argument over and over again. It takes 3 years to properly evaluate a draft. And to say it's a bust esp after draft experts both years gave him passing grades. And the Richardson trade and pick is at least worth a couple of stinkers. He selected the best player in the 2013 draft at overall 13. After making a good trade for the pick. I'll talk to you in a year about 2013 and two years about 2014. It's ridiculous to say either draft is a bust and he couldn't draft players. Some Jets fans: no patience and only want immediate gratification. Have no concept of a logical plan to rebuild the team.
