Come on man, the tweet you are posting has the correct spelling of the guy's name in it! Pet peeve, sorry. Either way, hopefully his troubles are behind him and he's coming into practice with a clear mind. His pass catching and his ability to get outside would be huge for this offense (and whichever QB we go with as a safety blanket). I like the way Powell has played thus far though... so who knows. You can never have enough depth when Chris Ivory is one of your starters.
he can catch and he can run. The biggest thing missing from the base package of the jets last season was the ability to dump the ball off to a running back for cheap yards. Both Ivory and Goodson have that ability. Hell look at 2011 compared to 2012 - passes to a running back and the amount of yards. Like a 50% drop off...that is a safety net for a QB and Sporano eliminated the option of it from the offense.
I'll start off by saying that it's not clear whether Goodson is an addict, but that's definitely possible. I would say that it's more likely than not that he has a serious alcohol problem, but I guess it's conceivable that maybe he only has more than 1 drink per day 2 - 3 times a year and this time it happened to result in him getting wasted and then arrested. As for how long the rehab is, it depends. For something like opiates (prescription pills, heroin) 180 days inpatient plus working with a sponsor in NA for the rest of your life gives you the best chance of success (although the success rate is only like 10% - 20%, versus about 0% for rehab alone.) Few people can afford the 180 days (which costs $100,000 or more, and even good insurance only covers 3 - 4 days.) Alcoholism is different. Alcohol withdrawal is one of the few kinds of substance withdrawals that can actually kill you. The people who drink a case of beer or a bottle of liquor a day for years- you'll start getting seizures if you just stop all of a sudden, and if you try to taper down to half a case a day, you'll still be shaking uncontrollably, sweating heavily, feeling like death, and desperately wanting to have more so that you can feel normal again. It's pretty much impossible for an alcoholic to taper down from those amounts. Alcoholics who don't get drunk every day, which is most alcoholics, won't have that insane level of withdrawal. Those with extreme symptoms of withdrawal, the really heavy drinker alcoholics, need inpatient treatment for a week or two to get through that period. After that, they need to go to AA meetings for the rest of their life, and if they are dedicated, and sobriety is their top priority in life (above family, friends, career, money, love, sex, etc) they have a shot at staying sober and having a happy, flourishing life- very often way more productive and happy than non-addicts. Almost no matter how much of an alcoholic Goodson could be, it shouldn't really take a month of in-patient rehab. AA meetings should only take a few hours a day at this point, so yeah he wouldn't have any free time beyond football stuff, but it would still be doable. On the other hand, it could be that he worked out some kind of deal where he had to complete 30 or whatever days of rehab in exchanged for no-jail or dropped charges. If the Jets didn't feel like he was going to be available for the start of the season, Goodson would have been cut instead of McKnight. Hopefully Goodson has at least been keeping somewhat in shape. The Jets desperately need some help at RB, especially since the QB position looks like it is going to struggle a lot this year. Hopefully Goodson will be ready to go, but if he decides that he needs to make sobriety his #1 priority and that he has to take a year off from football to save his life, I would respect that. But if he's going to play, he needs to start practicing SOON and be ready for preseason game 4.
Hopefully he is still in good enough shape to be able to contribute. Given all the time he's missed, Powell will probably start the season ahead of Goodson on the depth chart but Goodson and Ivory will get the chance to unseat Powell as the main guy. One of Goodson's major strengths is that he can catch out of the backfield, so the other team doesn't automatically know it's going to be a run play when they see Goodson on the field.
ESPN: Mike Goodson to report on Tuesday Adam Schefter confirmed it: ESPN's Adam Schefter reports in-limbo Jets RB Mike Goodson is expected to report to the team within 24 hours. Goodson was AWOL for all of camp for undisclosed reasons. There's been speculation he spent much of August in rehab after offseason felony drug and gun charges. Goodson may not be game-ready by Week 1, but the Jets could really use him. Their passing-game personnel is the worst in the league -- east of Oakland, at least -- and Goodson is versatile with some playmaking ability. https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/372058528284155904
2012 Powell - 17 catches - 35 targets Greene - 13 catches - 31 targets 30 catches for 290 yards in 2011 LT - 42 catches - 61 targets Greene - 30 cathes - 41 targets 72 catches for 660 yards - 600 were YAC and 18 1st downs That is a lot to take away from an offense.
I think Powell has been solid, but he isnt a very good 3rd down back. He's serviceable. Goodson provides a plus player at that position. He has natural hands and has dynamic ability- something we have extremely missed so far (although it is only the preseason). I think a 3 headed run game of Powell and Ivory on 1st and 2nd down and Goodson in on 3rd down could be something very good. They all are different players and fulfill different niches. If you cant have one superstar, its good to have multiple backs that can do different things well (kind of like the Saints).
When you start looking at the numbers, Sporano really made Schottenheimer look good. (I know, I didn't think that was possible either.) Still, if we had to get Sporano to get Morningwhig, and if the latter takes this offense to the next level, then maybe it was all worth it? More on topic, hopefully Goodson will be able to fill some of the void left by LT. Maybe being in Jets green can straighten out his conduct like it did for Cromartie.
