Because I think you'll be reading stories in the near future about how he screwed himself.

Marrone tried a power play on Terry Pegula. The guy isn't stupid -- he sold his oil/shale holdings when oil was $100/bbl.

He wanted an extension AND some of the GM's player picking responsibilities. Pegula was shocked that he left, especially because Marrone had been speaking to him directly (i.e., about Orton quitting) rather than relaying the info to the GM or President of the club and letting them inform Pegula, the normal chain of command.

Plus, Marrone really badmouthed the Bills organization to Bill Pollian, apparently. I don't doubt there are some longtime Ralph Wilson backstabbers still left there (hell, they backstabbed Polian 20 years ago), but it looked cheesy for Marrone to badmouth the organization. Polian didn't need him to tell him, he has friends there too.

There are different stories and a different spin coming out on this. Who knows what the real story is. Obviously Pegula is smart but not necessarily NFL smart. Woody is smart too but not NFL smart.

i have to disagree. guys go from making a shit ton to making less regularly. many of them handle it POORLY but many of them handle it well. its all a matter of what is important and how smart you are with your money.

That's not the scenario Marrone was going for. He was looking for a double dip. He fucked up. Of course he'll be able to survive quite nicely with the $4 mill, but he's not some blue collar guy that hit the lotto and is going to bank it all and go back to being a gym teacher like you alluded to.

    He wanted the big time.

He miscalculated by a wide margin and that's possibly the last good money he'll ever make. Him making $750K at a mid major may sound like a lot of money to some, but to a guy who was looking at $40 million over the next 10 years, that's an awfully piddling amount.

Right now the rumors are that the Texans want him to be their new HC, so he might be able to pull off the switch. I think the Bills were going to fire him after 2015 (unless he made the playoffs) since he was clashing so much with the front office. Usually the front office wins those battles.

His stock was not going to be higher after getting fired next year. With the QB problems he had, and Orton probably retiring, no first round draft pick - it would be hard for him to make the playoffs or even post a winning record. By leaving on a high note, he was still viewed as a viable candidate to immediately become a HC again. If he had a 7-9 record and got fired, I think he'd have little to no chance of immediately getting a new HC job. He'd have to become an OC again, or a non-top-tier college HC and maybe get another shot down the line.

The move that he made gives him a chance to make nearly $10m this year, plus the chance to remain a HC at the NFL level beyond 2015. If he doesn't get an NFL HC job, then he could still get a coordinator job or a college HC job. It was a douchey thing to do to his players, and the fans, but from a career perspective I think it was a reasonably shrewd move, albeit a gamble.

Yeah, but we really can't put ourselves in their position to make that judgment about them. You offer a blue collar guy $4MM to never work again and he'd take it in a second.

You offer Lebron James $4MM to never work again and he'll tell you to piss off.

Marrone is not Lebron, but he's no where near a blue collar guy happy to take his cash and go home.

Yet they hired the guy who wouldn't interview with us. Doubt Fox walked away from the Broncos to sign up for Jay Cutler, that man got fired.

he'll get a decent college job. He was the second choice at Michigan if they couldn't convince Harbaugh. He comes out looking like an asshole over this whole thing though. Probably because he is an asshole but there's plenty of assholes running football teams in this world so he'll be okay eventually.

You must have the wrong team. The Texans weren't dumping ANY coach after 1 year, let alone Bill O'Brien.

UPDATE: Marrone is now the Asst. OL Coach for Jacksonville. Unreal.....

He's employed now..Just signed on with the Jags as Assistant HC/OL coach. Not the job I'm sure he was hoping for but if he can turn around the Jags OL it would help his resume out. He might have a chance of coaching a few games if Bradley gets canned during the season.

Not the worst place he could be. I guess he'll remain on of the hot assistants for next year's Black Monday.

Probably not was he was going for but not a bad backup plan.

Still a douche IMO for bailing on Syracuse.

Totally misplayed by him...despite getting the money ...he has basically ruined his earning potential ...I don't see him as an NFL coach anytime soon...and I bet he'd give back the 4 mill now to be HC in Buffalo

Oh, I've been saying that for days now--total miscalculation and yeah, he'd give it back in a second to be an NFL HC. Even if he had no job security, HCs can bounce around from job to job.

He may be out of the HC job market for a while and that's money he'll never make back.

    My mistake.

Anyway, it seemed likely he'd at least get an o-line job, and teams probably like having guys with prior NFL HC experience as position coaches.

I could be wrong but I think Marrone was afraid of getting fired in Buff under new ownership. Esp when they refused to give him a vote of confidence. Ownership issues are a big factor with NFL head coaches.
