Yeah this probably isn't worth arguing anyway. Even if Atlanta doesn't give us their 15 pick I think we should still dish him. I like what Tangini is doing by holding out -- but in the end we really don't need his services and I would like to get him and that contract out of NY. I would settle for their 2nd and 3rd or this years 2nd and next years 2nd. Go out and sign a high priced FA CB or RT. Or I could be arguing because of my personal feelings on JA. I really have really disliked him since he sat out the Pittsburgh game. I don't think I will ever get over that.
Thanks DaJets, I had no idea this would be the result. Now back to guyonthecouch... Nice, you drop a quick one right before you head off to work. I hope you come back to see this debunking. Trust me, I read EVERY single line of every single post in threads I read. I don't complain about people misquoting me, and then turn around and do it to others. Abe is not getting "the screws" from Jets management. There is no doubt in my mind we would not have been having this conversation right now had Abe shut his mouth from day one, and patiently waited for the team to get under the cap. We were astronomically over before the whole CBA thing went on. Tannenbaum spent a week renegotiating with Penny, and Martin, etc. to get under the cap before the clock rolled over to next season. All the while, JAbe was whining to his friends about how he felt mistreated. This is a no-no with any Parcells/Bellicheck etc. team. Mangini is cut from that mold. Abe wrote his own ticket out. He is one of our best players because he is THAT DAMN GOOD. First of all, Santana Moss wasn't resigned because his contract WASN'T up. We TRADED him for Coles. And no, in no way, shape, or form does Santana Moss hold a candle to John Abraham in terms of total ability and impact on a football field. Moss is a good player, Abe is ELITE. As far as the staff telling Abe he isn't wanted because he doesn't fit into their plans, I have NO clue where you get your information, but you should work for ESPN. That is SOME insider information you have there. There have been ZERO statements that Abe does not fit into the teams plans. On something you said before that I just remembered. Abe was not told by the Jets to go interview with the Falcons. As a matter of fact, the Jets gave no names to Abe to talk to. They told his agents that they were welcome to look around, visit other teams, and if a deal could be struck, they would look at it then. Abe met with your owner on the same day the Seahawks offered us their #31. It was a simultaneous action that Abe came to an agreement at the same time that the Jets agreed with Seattle. (BTW: Abe visited them before he visited you. That's why Seattle offered what they did. Guess you weren't the only team he impressed with his talk of getting the job done.) They tagged him, yes, as a bargaining chip. Plain and simple, when they tagged him, we were in a state of panic. The deadline to be under the cap was quickly approaching, and we were $20M over it. We had a whole new staff working out the kinks, and they faced a huge emergency. So they tagged Abe in order to not let him walk away, or if he did, at least leaving us something of value to show for it. The arrogance of some of you Atlanta fans is staggering. None of you acknowledge the statements being made repeatedly that YOUR TEAM offered Abe the HUGE contract, thereby showing the Jets some of your cards as far as his perceived worth. Yet, you continue to ride on the Seattle #31, which could also have other options tied into it. Some of the Falcon fans coming on here are good, intelligent posters. CWDownz and FastEdBo have shown that some people can actually be reasonable. I wonder how many of us Jets fans are stinking up your Falcons boards demanding multiple first rounders for Abe.
Yea..I know about the grudge. But we are no different than any other fans. Cowboy fans will love T.O. now Giant fans will swoon over Keyshawn And if Abe playsll and reups with us..all is forgiven As some one once said: "he may be a bastard..but he's our bastard".
Alio, that pretty much sums it up and that's what I've seen happen over the past week. I still believe the Jets will get what's fair to their FO although there will still be some of their fans that will think they were cheated, even if they do get the Falcons' 15th pick. I realized that the Falcons' FO showed JAbe their hand which is good and doable by him and he's ready to go there. This should have been the toughest hurdle of the whole ordeal instead of trying to determining what the Jets' FO, who have the final say in a 'trade' via the Franchise Tag, would have required to allow the transaction to take place. It was obvious in the beginning that the deal will not include Schaub, as the Falcons' FO does not wish to part with him until next year. It appears obvious that deal does not include this year's 15th overall pick as well. Other possibilities I've heard are the 2nd and 3rd round picks or 2nd round pick and a player. I've also heard this and next year's 2nd round picks being mentioned. Personally, I'm okay with the 15th overall pick but that is just my opinion and I'm not the one dealing with this situation. So what's fair? That is for the FO's to determine and not us. But let's just see what you all think of this: If it can't be this year's 15th pick, what about this year's 3rd rounder and next year's first. Next year's 1st pick can't be but one position under the Seahawk's present offer for this year and potentially up to 30 positions above it. Chances are it'll fall somewhere between 20-28th pick overall if the Falcons have a great season next year. I still don't see a Super Bowl next year because of the pathetic offensive line we have and there could be major injuries that could happen to cause a collapse like it did with the Jets this past year. That's why this year's 3rd rounder is in there to compensate for the wait of next year's first rounder and to provide a lot of value for JAbe.
My thinking, if it comes to picks for next year, would be this: We hand you Abe, and you give us this year's and next year's second rounders. I think that's pretty fair. You keep your first rounders, but we get the leverage to move up in both drafts. If we can't have your #1 this year, which is a safer bet than waiting for next year's, then I think both #2s would be equitable. What do you think?
Personally, I think that one is doable by me as well. You already know that I don't mind seeing that 15th pick go in the trade if that indeed is what it takes. Keep in mind that we're discussing the alternatives and those which you Jets fans feel like will be fair to you and this is keeping in consideration what Seattle/NYJ has set as the bottom line.
I think this would be the most fair on both ends. I can understand not wanting to give up a #15 pick. In a draft like this, that pick is almost sure gold. I think that's why we Jets fans have been so adamant that we get the sure bet pick, to make up for the loss of our sure bet player. It didn't help that Atlanta was so insistent on not including Schaub in any discussions, mush less an actual trade. It led to us feeling like Atlanta was looking to have their cake and eat it too. 2 second rounders can net you one really good pick. Of course, this would involve some wily play by our staff to parlay those picks into something better, but at least neither side would feel like they lost everything. I appreciate your stance on this issue. It's nice to see a rational conversation come out of this whole thing. It's great that people from around the league can come together and make good arguments for and against situations that affect us both.
Well, it seems I should have checked out the news before that last post. (I still had this thread open, and just refreshed it.) Looks like it all worked out in the end. I really wanted to keep Abe, but congrats Atlanta fans, you got a helluva DE. Good luck to you and to Abe!
