I seem to remember the Jets taking a can't-miss runningback on the #2 pick way back in 1990. The guy was absolutely the best choice because he was a game-breaker and a playmaker. Blair Thomas. The Jets reached their lowest ebb ever 6 years after making that mistake. They took another blazing fast can't miss playmaker 2 years later on the #15. Johnny Mitchell. The people who think Darren McFadden is a can't miss playmaker just haven't been watching the NFL for very long. Could he be? Sure. But he could also be out of the league in 3 years and it's a coin-flip as to which is which.
Raiders owner Al Davis is reportedly "intoxicated" with Arkansas running back Darren McFadden. Also, the selection of Ohio State tight end Rickey Dudley in 1996 has left a bad taste in Davis' mouth and would prevent him from taking current Buckeye Vernon Gholston. This contradicts Mike Florio who says the Raiders love Gholston

I have ZERO problem with a trade out...I actually would prefer a trade down with someone in the 10-18 range. So I guess we can agree on that.
Why we are going to draft McFadden? Youth. Thomas Jones will be old before you know it. Let's face it, we won't be winning any championship in the next year so it's important we take a young superstar now.

The Dolphins have been negotiating with Gholston and Long so figure both even if Miami doesnt take Gholston, there is a slim chance he drops to us. Word is Kiffin does not want to draft McFadden and wants to draft someone who fits their team needs. However, with Al Davis in control McFadden could very well end up in Oakland. With that said, if McFadden drops to us we HAVE to take him. A talent like that doesnt come around that often, especially dropping to the 6th pick! What we have to take into account what if McFadden and Gholston are gone, who do we take?
He maybe a good player but IMO we shouldnt draft another CB. To be honest if everyone is gone we should draft someone on offense, whether we have to move down or not. I think we are going down the road of having a good defense and a pathetic offense which is not a good balance.
McFadden has off-field issues and I wonder if Tangini wants to put their credibility with Woody to the test with someone who has been inching closer to Lawrence Philips (ironically, also taken #6) than a model-citizen like LaDanian Tomlinson.
I would rather carry the discussion not so much on where the Jets are right now, but where other teams are and why they would be almost gauranteed to pass on McFadden. Like: Miami: No way will Parcell's pick a RB as #1 - Parcells would love to unload the pick to some other team, but I do not think there will be any takers. Rams: Have to build a better offensive an defensive line. Unlikely for DF. Atlanta: The signed Turner from SD. Enough said. Raiders: You can read a lot of hype why there woulde be an inclination to pick DF as a guy AL davis covets but, I don't buy it. My main reason here is the Raiders do not pick again until the 4th round. I can not see anyone putting all their chances in one first day pick and going with a RB. Raiders trading down for picks is extremely possible. KC: Pretty much a similar boat as the Rams. They must do something for their offensive and or defensive lines. Personally, I think DF will fall to us. As much as I like Gholston, I think he will be gone before #6. The only way DF goes before us is if somebody trades up and grabs him; I think the Raiders will trade down with somebody; they have every reason to do it. It could be us, but I doubt it very much. I will also say that it is not impossible for the Jets to trade DRob to the Raiders in exchange for their #4 and giving our #6. If the Broncos trade goes through and we get a 4th round pick for DRob, I do not think the Raiders would be intersested in a 4th round pick and #6 for #4. I hate to say it, but I have gone into this draft expecting us to get slightly screwed with our #6 pick in terms of value vs. who we get. I really see the draft order going #1 Chris Long, Jake Long or Gholston #2 Jake Long, Glenn Dorsey or Chris Long depending #3 Best QB available #4 Trade up from someone for DMC - I really think this is where it could happen. If the Raiders are forced to pick I highly doubt they take DMC. #5 Most likely Clady, or Glenn Dorsey if Miami goes Gholston. #6 I think if we do absolutely nothing we either will have Gholston or DMC fall to us.
If Chris Long is on the board at 3, you need to try to ship Pennington and the 6th overall to Atl for the 3rd Overall, and the 68th pick (high 3rd rd), Pennington becomes their immediate starter, and they can draft Ryan at 6. They would go from being horrid at QB, to being set for years. There are a multitude of reasons why this works for Atlanta, since Pennington while flawed is better than anyone on their roster, he would be inside at least 10 games a year, and they need to upgrade the overall Character of the locker room.... The Jets would be getting Long, and replacing the lost 3rd rounder... The Trade Value chart shows this as valuing Pennington as 850 points (Low first rd pick...) 2200(3) + 250(68) - 1600(6) = 850(20th overall) You could throw in a Fourth Rd. pick to sweeten the deal for Atl, but that shouldn't be necessary...
wow Hobbes, have you gone off the deep end? Are you seriously putting Penningtons value at a 1st round pick? It is absurd to think Pennington alone would be enough to move to 3 but to suggest Atl gives us back a high third as well makes me think you have been sniffing glue this morning.
As I said, you could add a Fourth TO Atl, However, you are under estimating his value.Especially as it relates specifically to Atlanta. Even last year, with the Injury and no OL, he threw more TD's (10) than INT's (9), and posted and 86 rating, in the half season he played. (P.S. He was sacked 26 itmes in those games...) On any decent team he is capable of winning 10 games a year, and getting you to the playoffs... Plus, Harrington? Redman? AYKM? His one weakness, which is exacerbated in this stadium, is minimized in a dome.
