Ok I am lost where did Mawae fall off 2004 we had Martin winning the rushing title and a playoff team..2005 (bad year for whole team, injuries)

Amazing how guy gets hurt and we talk down a great career with a sub par 05 with injuries..Also by the way a Center can play pretty far in their careers and as Mawae showed at a very high level.

I can understand the youth movement being an excuse by I have to disagree by saying he is not still one of the better Centers in thE NFL..

Oh come on now, there's no reason for that. Personally I like having a few optimistic posters around. It's not like he's stating his hopes/ideas as fact, he's not trampling over anyone else's opinions, it's his own personal opinion and he makes it clear that it is so. If he's not hurting anyone, why start with the namecalling and flames? He's a fellow Jet fan right?

Theres more than enough negativity going around. I'm a bit more negative myself I think.

I said I would've taken Kreutz over him... where did I say he wasn't one of the better centers in the league?

Optimism is great. Anyone would agree with that, however I am along with many other people are optimistic the Jets can win 6-8 games next year.

His optimism is far fetched to say the least.

Id take Olin Kreutz over him, Mawae was the best center in the league but not anymore, he slowly declined, still a great player though.

If the Pro Bowl is your reasoning, then you're really out of explanations.

Thats not my only explanation. And even if it was its a damn good one. Every year its him startin and Tom Nalen backing him up. He also blocks better DT's and LB's then Olin Kreutz does.

This stunk to hear. I'm Ok with it and I kind of understand it but it still stinks. I am all for the youth movement but I don't see getting rid of a true player if you don't HAVE to. Most of the positions we have addressed so far I think we can draft or sign a WASH at least. We have too many concerns to add center in the mix but I liken it to the Chad fiasco. If we know that they are going to go then let them go now and start fresh.

It's not a "damn good one". Mawae deserved to be the starting center on most of those teams, but the Pro Bowl is nothing but a popularity contest. The best players don't start in many instances. And Mawae is more agile, pulls better. Kreutz is a more powerful guy who dominates DTs and LBs more than Mawae can.

Kevin is a 35 yr old football player. That's ancient by NFL standards. Also we are 2- 3 yrs away from contending for a playoff spot. It was time to cut the chord.

You just named all the reasons. It's not our fault you don't understand them.

So if they go 2-6 this year are you going to turn your coat and root against them like you did in 2005?

Why would I ever root against the jets? After we dropped our tenth loss, I DID NOT, root for them to lose. I watched each game as if it was the preseason, crushed that our playoff run was over. Why would you ever accuse me of rooting against them?

Because you openly rooted against them in game threads.

If you mean the bills game, I had mixed feelings about it, but was happy for them afterwards. But that was the only time.

Thank you-- and Martin is not the leading rusher anymore either. Even if a guy does have another year or two of decent ball left in him, for a cap strapped team to hold on to them at 4-8 million makes no sense. Mawae doesn't make sense to cut though, just because it doesn't really save us much- 1.5 mil on the cap- which is barely enough to cover the salary of a second round pick. All the problems we have right now are do to T Bradway being too loyal to old "Jets" who fans loved. Mawae, Fabini, Chrebet, Testaverde, and Martin were all signed to huge deals, that were a few years too long. now that these guys are all well into their 30's, they are not playing up to that level, and are not deserving of that type of cap space. We took big cap hits with jones and lewis too when they led the jets to the worst run d in the NFL. Lets just allow Mangina to do his thing, take a beating this year, and really rebuild.

I love Mawae and I feel he's still one of the top three players at his position. That said, it was a smart move to cut him. He's 35 years old making a ton of money at a position that isn't usually that high paying. We'll save more money there than anywhere else. I wish Mawae well, but we're better off in the long run cutting him now before his production falls off (see: C. Martin).

There are talented players coming out in the draft (N. Mangold and G. Eslinger) that will make one fifth of his salary. Plus, New Orleans center LaCharles Bentley is a free agent. He's young, tenatiouis and talented. It won't cost as much to sign him. We have more affordable options.
